I've been playing with drop ships, in pub matches, with blue berries. Just trying to get a feel for them, see how useful they actually are and see how good I am with them. Now originally I was talking about dropships. But it ended up being more about the blue berries. Watching those little bundles of joy run around like ants on fire is one thing, trying to influence and communicate with them is another.
No body has mics turned on in random pub matches, it's not a new discovery, I think everyone already knew that. The only person who has their mike on is the guy singing madona full blast or the guy who's dying of a coughing fit an speaks in swears. What I didn't realise was that no one else is listening either, or if they are listening that they either can't understand you or do the opposite.
I know without a mic it's me you and the telepathy, but there's always a good few give away signs I'm going to give you.
Landing in front of you: I'm not trying to be a road block, If iv put down I front of you or I'm hovering a foot of the grind next to you, it's so you can get in. That's not because I'm lonely, it's because your miles from an objective and on foot, but are clearly heading in the direction of something. Although you don't have an ounce of telepathy, I can figure that a scout with a rifle heading for the hills is after a vantage point, I can get you one. A heavy running from base to an objective, I can drop you there. Don't walk round me, I'm risking 500k to pick you up, and I'm at my most voulnerable while your thinking about it.
Hovering over a point: if for example, we've been red lined, iv picked up 2 of you from base cos you thought my ship was shiny when I ran the reppers but the other 14 players were busy falling off stuff, and calling in a million rdv's for me to dodge, so we left half empty. I then dodge through the tank fire, the swarms and all our base defences that you've let slip into enemy hands and take you to the furthest null cannon. Safe and easy. Ill make a pass and make sure it's clean, a blue berry is a commodity, I don't want you squished. Ill then hover directly over the point, that's yor que to jump out. If some 30 seconds passes with you shooting the rocks around us lighting us up like an Xmas tree ill give you another gentle hint, ill park almost touch the top of the null cannon. If another minute passes ill put it on the deck. PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD ONE OF YOU GET OUT! Finally, when you get so bored thinking, "what's this duche doing parking his ship next to this null canon, it's not even ours for Petes sake" that you get out and take the null canon, I'm still waiting there for YOU not for the scenery. Don't run off for another null canon, ill get you there in 4 seconds.....
Giving you a sniper: look around. Ill often put a target right out your window. I mean right out of it. There was a guy shooting our forces on a roof one match so I parked a blue berry gunner with a sweet shot lined up, still shooting the null cannon. So I take us in closer, still shooting the null cannon. So I park you right I front of the guy, hovering so close to the building that the guy could step off into us, your guns touching him and you change sides to continue shooting the null cannon ARGH!!!!
My final tip: the siren sound thing when we get shot at a lot, me jumping out, the drop ship descending quickly, these things are all normal, please remain seated, thankyou for flying drommy airways |

Ikr? Btw, are you the one who left a grimsnes (or whatever) sitting there for no apparent reason in a skirmish? It didn't have actives, and had missile turrets for some reason. I repaired it, waited from someone to reclaim it, then took off after a while. There was a really good chance it was going to last until the end (it got shot down about a minute before), but the scrub I picked up wouldn't get out, but instead decided to use the missile turret to rock the dropship enough for a railgun to send me into the face of a cliff.
Luckily the scrub on the turret remembered your final tip. |

I love flying dropships and I would even be so conceited as to say I believe I'm not too bad of a pilot. I get exactly what you're saying as a result and feel the same way. You'd think some cues would be obvious, such as hovering right in front of someone. What's even more annoying is when they simply circle your ship. Perhaps they are too new to know how to get in the ship, or maybe they just like walking around. I don't know. Either way, it can definitely be frustrating to spend a couple hundred thousand isk on a nice dropship to have few people benefit from it. I guess that's just what should be expected of random matches. |

As a dropship pilot myself, I too can agree with the OP. Granted that not everybody relishes the opportunity to board a dropship considering they are very vulnerable targets and the turrets can be difficult to aim sometimes. But, if operated by a good pilot, dropships can be loads of fun. In my opinion, there's no better feeling than ripping into reds with blasters and seeing them scramble around trying to figure out where the hell the shots are coming from. And once they see the airborne menace, they die in agony. |

One method that grabs my attention is to give my ship a "love tap", I.e. firing on my ship to capture my attention. Mind you, don't love tap my ship with a rocket. |

I want to fly my dropship but this same stuff happens, can't make it any more obvious for the passengers yet they have no clue. Something else that is annoying is when I'm left going back and forth around my MCC because the enemy has all the turrets near our side and that's literally the only safe fly zone I have. Instead of sitting in the gunner seat trying to pick people off from way outside of that guns range, why not try and realize my fly zone is hindered and attempt to fix it? I promise I'll pick you back up. Heck, I'd park my ship and do it myself if I was able to lock the driver's seat.
Thinking about putting scanners on my ship and being an aerial scout revealing locations to my teammates, just so I can do something helpful that doesn't require telepathy.

OP great post! I fly a dropship too and know what you mean. But you just have to love the blueberries who use your guns to fire at the MCC the entire match. I mean come on man...you are not doing any damage to the thing...use the guns to shoot the guys on the other team who are right on the ground in front of you.
Oh...and another one of my favorites are the berries who steal your ship. I had one last night in a match with me steal my ship (was out reparing the darn thing) and within seconds crash the thing into the ground! |

I am too thinking about the scanners. Does anyone know how these things work with a dropship? Do they just reveal the targets to those in the DS or do they also aid your guys on the ground? |

Hard to figure the hint though, because blueberries also like to fire at random things. |

On the other side of the coin. There have been multiple times when I have jumped on a drop ship that came to me thinking that maybe the pilot saw where I was wanting to go and was offering me a ride.
Too cool I thought. "Thanks for the ride."
We lift off and I'm sitting there... "Where the hell are you going?"
A few moments later they're flying into a building, getting shot down, or wanting me to jump out on the other side of the map from where I wanted to be, the point I was heading to defend hacked shortly after.
So yes, I've been burned by DS pilots on more than one occasion and it has made me reluctant to jump into a DS that hasn't said anything to me on Team Chat first. Obviously I haven't had occasion to fly with the original poster. Things would probably have gone much better. |

The solution is going to be squads of six.
Newberries are still learning how to shoot. We can't expect them to know anything about vehicles or objectives.
When we can enter a match with a corp squad of one pilot and five passenger/gunners all on the same coms the dropship will come into its own. It will become a true assault troop transport that will inspire fear. |

squad 1 pilot gunner gunner scout sniper outside of the ship acting as another eye
squad 2 the squad that jumps out- I would suggest filling it with cqc fits such as HMGers, shotgunners, and MD logis |

You can't enter a match with two squads (reliably), so that isn't an option. |

I really hate the number of Dropships threads because they're either way too far fetched or written obviously prematurely. However this one has structure and more than most experience in it.
Drommy Hood: My universal code for a DS is to never trust anyone but your squad in a Dropship. They'll sit there and wait for your trusted squad mates manning the guns to die and farm WP. Occasionally you get a smart one who knows the queue to get out.
Check out the channel Condor Squad. We hook DS pilots up with legit and tight squads.
Current Squad Setup: 1x Pilot (usually squad leader for obvious reasons) 2x gunners 1x "Skydiver" as we've come to call them. When some one is continuously using a Swarm Launcher or forge, the pilot makes a pass over the suspect and the skydiver (preferably an HMG heavy) bails out and deals with the threat.
But relying on the blues will bring on the blues, as they will be uncoordinated and dismal with respect (most if not all of the time)

Now that sounds like a good idea. Iv not used a fully fitted dropship with my corp yet, as iv wanted to get good before I go ahead and load in the guys and crash them into something. I think I'm past that point though I'm still loosing ships to enemy fire, but only when I'm doing something stupid now that I have a fully fitted DS rather than a milita.
I'm totally going to have to try and employ your tactics with the skydiver |

I empathize with this sentiment.
Too many times I land in front of 10 teammates all max-running distance from objective and they treat me like my ship is diseased.
I'm sure half of that comes down to their rambo attitude in contrast to teamwork. They think they're more useful off doing their own thing, going to some worthless place and getting shot up by 5 guys.
However I'm sure some of they just really are completely ignorant of the purpose and usefulness of getting inside a ship for a 20 second ride.
I wish I had some kind of horn that yelled GET IN so at least I'd know they were making a conscious decision to ignore my offer rather than just being blind as a bat. |

I had no idea (until last night) that you could skydive out of a dropship the way you can out of the MCC. I like the idea of having a push to talk function with 5 m audio radius built into every dropship. GÇ£This is your captain speaking...GÇ¥
I got on a dropship when I was new thinking that it would take me to an objective but it just flew around and never landed, so when I saw it was coming low over a building I jumped for it and never got in a dropship again until recently.
Last night I squadded up with some Corp members that I had never met before (we have 350 members) and when we spawned at the beginning of the game they said GÇ£Hey, Fox, you have a sniper riffle. You should come with us.GÇ¥ So I run back to where two of them were standing around. Then a dropship lands and I follow them in. It is the fourth member of our squad. I try to get on one of those guns I see in the doors, but I canGÇÖt figure out how to do it.
Then the pilot says GÇ£I have never come in from this angle before. This is going to be tricky.GÇ¥
Then moments later : GÇ£Get out! Everyone Out!GÇ¥
I hit circle and find myself falling through the air with a huge explosion right above me.
Then I think I see that message at the bottom of the screen about hitting X, like you get when you jump out of the MCC. I did not realize that worked when jumping out of a drop ship as well... I go to hit X, but I am a fraction of a second too late. SPLAT!
It was finny, but I did not know what the hell was going on. I assume he was trying to place us on top of a tall building and something went wrong. |

So as for the whole hovering near a point so everyone can hop out; Can we just bail from really high up and activate the inertial dampeners so you don't have to get super close to the ground? Like paratroopers! :D
*EDIT*
Neeeeeevermind just saw that it's possible lol |

Does anyone else play chicken with the ground and only try and hit the dampener a split-second before impact? I'm justifying it by believing that the dampener makes me easier to see and I'd rather be behind a hill before I hit it.

I'm still waiting for the video of a full HMG wielding heavy squad dropping out of the sky and annihilating the enemy team. |

We never get enough players to do it in one match and keep the DS airborne.
But then again if we got a guy with a recorder in the right position and a guy with AV and timed it just right we could get video of a squad of heavies hitting the ground with a flaming dropship falling out of the sky...
Bojo!!! we have to do this it would look awesome! |

We could make "why you should be a dropship pilot" video's and show off all the cool stuff we can do, could boost the number of dropship pilots in game and we could get some publicity for condor squad as well |

I am imagining the set up for this being a squad of heavies in a dropship just hovering above an objective and waiting someone to pull a militia swarm launcher and shoot it down. Roll camera!
Heavies hit the ground simultaneously, recover from landing, start tearing it up with HMGs as the dropship crashes into the nearby hillside. The rotating cylinders spin down and there is silence...
Then the guy recording is like "didn't quite get the dropship crashing in the shot... bring in another one and wait for them to recap the objective". |

But on a side note we can't risk some random berry's messing this up a corp match would probably be best .
And mithridates, I can see that happening a lot. |

Saw it on the recruitment thread but my artistic skills are awesome in imagination but crap in practice. And it wasn't a huge derail it's still DS related. |
