[THIS THREAD IS MADE TO BE LINKED] - http://bit.ly/DUST514facts
This is DUST 514. There are some rumors, falsities, and complete trolls out there, that may have you confused, and/or disillusioned with this game. They have likely given you bad, or simply wrong information. This thread is to set things straight So from someone who has ACTUALLY played the game, listens and reads official posts and generally isn't a troll...
HERE ARE THE FACTS:
- This game is FREE to play. No one is/should be making you pay to play this game.
- It is NOT pay to win. There is nothing in this game, that you can buy, that makes you better than anyone else. CCP is very aware of player views on this and are careful with what they offer for real world money.
- NO more Re-sets. This is IT people. No more character resets. Your characters and skills are saved.
- Updates are FREE. CCP will be updating this game for free. Multiple times. This game will constantly be developed.
- Not just for Christmas. DUST 514 has a development plan measured in years. It is also written into, and going to be an integral part of, CCP's other successful game EVE Online.
- This is a BETA. This game works! but it is still in development. It is a "true" beta. If you played it a month ago and played it now you would see a marked improvement. No game play feature is set in stone. So if you think something is "Unbalanced" report it.
- This is a BETA (again). Needs to be said again. This is not a "finished" game! Game play, textures, balance, content. All are all improving/getting added to. Game stability (lag) is being improved almost weekly.
Hope this helped clear things up a bit. Below are some very useful links that might also help.

This is truth. I support this post.
You should also mention a part of the reasoning behind the SP cap that people moan about. Free to play game relies on marketplace sales to fund development etc.
If everyone hit max SP and skilled everything, there would be no need for them to buy AURUM, so development slows. This game is designed to take forever to completely skill into everything. Without an SP cap, it would die fairly quickly. |

PAY TO WIN, not PLAY. It's not PLAY to win either.
You can create a character and activate passive SP, then just walk away for 6 months, come back and have enough SP for a competent build in whatever area you want to focus on. |

Not pay to win? Hmm let me tell you what i got from merc packs: -all 3 mag variant suits (special offer together with the merc pack) -30 day booster -50 fused locus grenades (still have a nice stack of them and wait for the playermarket) -50 HKM4 prototype shotgun that does not require any SP - dragonfly scout suit - toxin SMG - 50 hacked uplinks 40.000 AUR (of course i got more then that but thats just the regular stuff)
now im aswell aible to buy passive boosters to increase my SP gain even more. Another thing is you can buy weapons which are sooner unlocked then their prototype variants. Like the Killswitch or CBR-7 darkside swarm launcher and other stuff that gives you a advantage.
So with investing money into this game you will have much faster access to better gear and better gear can be purchased even sooner due to the lowered SP requirement. |

Then instead of pay to win, seeing as though all the items are available to everyone, with or without AUR, you could call it 'pay to use items a week before everyone else'. Kind of like how a premium subscription works.
Actually, we should just deactivate the marketplace all together. No more AURUM, let CCP have none of our money, and let the game die because of lack of funds for development.
Shut up. |

If by winning you mean earning SP faster and getting earlier access to stuff, then yeah, pay to win against militia. That equipment doesn't give an advantage over standard fit players. People complain about new players not having a chance. This just helps give them a bit of a boost.

That's pay to "Do more faster" as the announcer in the war barge states. Pay to Win means that there are powerful assets that can only be purchased with real world funds. There are no such assets in DUST. |

Your postage is based on 3 false assumptions:-
1) your assuming that skill system makes you a "better player", it doesn't. There is a whole list of cognative errors players make in regards to SP totals. Both in eve and in dust, higher SP totals are not "win", the SP system is designed to limit your progression not empower you later. I could gas on about this but...
2) The items you get in the merc pack have statistical equivilents on the market available in isk. With no exceptions.
3) You believe that AUR items give you some kind of qualitative advantage. It doesn't. All it does is allow you to compete with players who have started sooner than you its a moot point when you start maxing out skills (see 1).
The only advantage AUR items genuinely give is it mitigates some of the isk/Death attrition every player feels and replaces it with real money. And Im not really sure thats an advantage, if you think of it as paying a monthly subscription ("im only going to buy one merc pack a month") There is no real difference between this game and a pay at counter title. |

You realize this thread specifically states you cant buy an in match item with AUR, that doesn't have an equivalent isk item...
The only thing your paying for is getting them a little faster
Edit: im just going to go and add more examples into the OP |

Yea but that isn't Pay to win, it is pay to get ahead. Plenty of players who haven't spent a single AUR in this game and after 2-3 days of setting up their character build properly have had great success with the game. |

I think a lot of problems arise from the fact that development of Dust is taking a very different path from what most people are used to.
This is called an open beta right now but traditionally the beta period does not have an impact on what happens after release. This is why it sounds odd to call it a "true beta" and why people are confused about the idea of no future character wipe.
There is also confusion over what release means since the game will continue to change after that point (and there is no planned character wipe). What distinguishing characteristic will mark that change?
And pay to win is always a tricky argument. Pretty much every Free to Play game has stuff to buy that will give you an advantage over non paying players. Dust will get around that argument quite well once we have a player market that allows us to trade such items for in game currency (but that is going to be a while). Until then there will always be two sides to that argument. |
