Today I stumbled upon a very teeth grinding discussion going on in local chat.
Apparently this game is god awful, broken and unplayable. The game will be set at $60 a copy once the beta is over, all the weapons suck and can't be equipped.
CCP will most likely drop this game after 6 months because even though it's free no one is playing it lolol(Points to players list).
(Hey I saw someone driving tank how do I get one?) Don't even bother bro, you have to save like 1,000,000 SP just to drive one and you have to pay another million to buy it. Only the pay 2 win guys drive them.
SP is stupid, I should be able to earn as much as I want. Everybody runs around with AUR items, so the rest of us can't compete, I'll never support a pay 2 win game.
Also guys, CCP has said they will delete your characters after the beta is over, what a bunch of scammers, I already paid for the mercenary pack. The worst part of it all is that corporations are useless, what can you do with a corp? it's basically just a useless friends list, but since they charge real money for a simple feature like voice chat? **** em!
The only good classes are the Assault rifles and the Heavy's, shouldn't be surprised a no name Developer like CCP couldn't get a simple thing like balancing right the first time.
This game lags so bad, I shot a dude 45 times in the head and he turned around and killed me, at least Call of Duty and battlefield have dedicated servers.
(I told them CCP is going to be giving out expansions and patches for free) lol Yeah right, if that's true then that just confirms that the game is going to be Pay to play once it releases, how else would the company make money, im not paying $60 a month for this garbage.
(told them that SP, Caps, sound fixes and more content is coming) Oh yeah? where's the proof you keep saying soon, soon, lol I think your in denial and just another CCP fanboy/advertiser.
.....I was seriously teed off during this. This is only a fraction of some of the things that were being said by these people, I would usually just deem these guys idiots, laugh out loud, and move on about my business but what caught my attention was that this BS was actually spreading!! More and more people joined in on the discussion, with more and more people becoming convinced that what these guys were saying was actually true. People who claimed they were liking the game suddenly found reasons to hate or drop it all together. Even though I'm a genius, a single genius cannot educate a sea of fools. I was praying somebody out there with a brain would eventually step in to help me out. Nope, I sat there for long well over the time I should have trying to tell these guys what's up and at the end of it all I got no where.
This kinda of thing is counterproductive to what the community and the game needs right now, this game will only continue to grow for as long as it's player base keeps up. Having people like this just flat out spout nonsense and lies will turn people away from the game. I'd like to see more players once in while to just drop by in local chat and answer a newbie's question before somebody else with a ****ed up agenda gets to them first.

Unfortunately most of those are very valid criticisms for FPS players new to the game, expecting yet another FPS. Such players are used to instant gratification. Hell, FPSs didn't have any unlocks until recently; you could use every gun in a game the second you launched multiplayer. Even nowadays in FPSs with unlocks they rarely give you an edge, just variety, and almost never as much of a boost as in Dust (even after the nerf to proto gear).
FPS players need to change their mindset. Dust is not CoD/BF/Halo/Killzone, and has much deeper gameplay mechanics hidden beneath a rather dull exterior and obtuse UI. Until the mindset is changed, the P2W perception will stay, and the critique remains. It's is a steep uphill battle for us and CCP to change the mindset. Dust is F2P, so people don't think twice in deleting the game when their face gets melted yet again by a vet in proto gear.
Finally, perception is everything. That's all that matters in the end, and if perceptions described in the OP spread, the game will suffer, or fail. Fixing every single misconception, and fixing the few legitimate concerns (lag and fps being foremost, extremely poor and conflicting communication about character wipe at launch, and UVT costing money) should be CCP's priority. Us players can also help fix such misconceptions, but it's hard. |

Wow, I knew it was that bad but I hadn't seen anything on that scale o_O
As a community your right we do need to step up to the plate here Ill make sure I get on local more often, ill ask and see if D-Uni cant do anything about it but at the very least ill get some of the guys to help out.
Tectonious, you might be right but the point stands, this is our game and if people are this far of the mark we need to correct them, some people don't want to listen but a lot of people do listen but don't speak up. So if you getting called a fanboy etc, heh actual i don't mind, if fanboy means I take the time to find out what is going on before i open my mouth then im a fanboy for a lot of games.
My point is ignore the dicks but make sure those that are listening but not saying anything hear the truth, those that do will probably take the time to find out one way or another.
Last thing, CCP, this might be our game but its your internet spaceship love child :P
what do you guys intend to do about it. I mean in terms of advertising iv not seen much (also don't really expect to until end of open beta) so are you waiting till open beta before you start advertising Dust or are you making efforts to get the information out there before it becomes commonly excepted opinion? |

DUST is a little weird to look at in the FPS category. If you have not played EVE, then it is very difficult to wrap your head around. EVE is FAR more based on skill points than DUST is. With proper map knowledge and play, someone in the worst gear could take out someone in far better gear. That is where the skill aspect of a FPS comes from. The 'better equipment' part comes from training ala EVE. You can technically use every weapon at the start it will just be a less powerful version of that weapon.
I doubt CCP will drop this game. It is tied intricately into EVE. Even with a small amount of players, EVE only has ever had like 30,000 players online at the same time. If DUST goes away I would suspect that it would mean that EVE would be dead. Worst case scenario that I can see happening is the developers just saying "we are not going to update DUST again."
The game is really not Pay to Win. AUR items are not that much better (if at all) than the ISK versions. The 'Raven' Assault Suit has the same stats as the 70 AUR version and the Type-I that you buy with ISK. It just means that you don't need to buy a new one after getting killed.
IF another wipe happens, AUR spent will be restored. The Mercenary Pack will also go into the final build. Corporations are not useless. They are actually much stronger than clans from others games, especially once the game was Gold. Imagine combining the power of a World of Warcraft guild to pimp out a Battlefield soldier. That's what is possible.
Ever drop suit has it's advantages. Scouts are a lot faster and are difficult to see on the radar. I saw one in a match manage to flank the enemy team and Nova Knife them all. They all have their place in a team. Having a Logistics guy through out spawn locations at the perfect spot is just juicy.
I have not experienced any such lag.
CCP can make money off of a Free to Play game easily. Case in point: AUR boost items. They don't give a super duper massive advantage (either making gear cheaper or giving more skill points) and are there for the "cash rich, time poor person." Sure, someone who ALWAYS has a boost is going to have more SP than someone who doesn't but it would, in the end, just give them more options on how to play. IE, they can be a great sniper or a great storm trooper instead of a great sniper and a decent storm trooper. Also, since the servers are already on EVE, CCP would probably get most of their bank from the subscriptions in EVE.
Be well.

If this game is going to be successful, it's going to have to attract a decent size audience.
DUST doesn't have to MEET these players expectations, but it does need to hold them long enough for them to understand DUST's expectations.
This is why game balance is very critical. I know many players here feel that putting isk on the line is good enough justification for a more powerful dropsuit. That argument is more valid to the elitist mindset though, and while DUST is attractive to elitists, you need grunts to fill the front lines. It's simple math. If you want full games, you're gonna need welp groups.
Balance has to be close enough that people are not put off in the early stages. This means especially visible advantages such as health need to seem reasonable. The upgrade power should all be in the tweaks, bells, and whistles.
Facts are -
When people feel the issue is with how they played they will continue to persevere even through losses.
When people feel the issue is with the system and it's imbalances they stop playing.
The perception of the player must be guided to view the skill as the difference, not the isk cost. |

This bothers me as much as anybody else. It's one of the reasons i really want CCP to defaut comms to ON. Granted, many peeps don't have headsets but every little bit helps.
Experience with EVE has taught me that maybe 5% of players who try EVE stay. It's the nature of the beast. To some extent, the same thing will be true of DUST. It's really only the players who don't need the game explained to them that will be enraptured by it, because they will see the intelligence and vision that went into the design of it in their first 30 minutes of playtime.
These are the players who will stay, and by word of mouth, spread the reputation of the game. It's the price we pay for CCP not dumbing down the game, bless their ruthless viking hearts. DUST will pull 5% of players from all the FPSs, and some players from other genres too. We will have the player base DUST needs to sustain the game, and contrary to normal FPS performance, the player population will grow continuously over time.
P.S. The other thing we will see over time is peeps evangelizing and explaining the game to their friends, and teaching them the ropes like an old sergeant. Over the long run, this will add a lot of peeps to the game.
But you peeps who saw what New Eden was and could be without any need for interpretation or explanation, you are the ones I want to fight beside and against, because in the end we are all measured by the quality of our friends and our enemies. |

Shut down open beta kick all new beta tester and let us real closed beta testers get this game on the right track before we go and release it to all the newberries. As much fun it is in open beta id would haved liked this game progress a bit more before it went open. |

From a customer relations business perspective, CCP shouldn't focus their resources on people who a dissatisfied with the game. They should instead focus the customers/players who enjoy the game, identify the aspect of the game that satisfy them and then focus on these aspect, promoting them as a sort of specialization.
Above posts point out that communicating their product philosophy and ideas is somewhat lacking, atleast to the general player. CCP should IMO strenghten their profile and product. What is Dust about? What do they expect from their game? What should we as a player expect from the game? Why is it unique? What is the games strenghts?
Regarding dumbing the game down, or fear of it, I'd suggest not as it changes some core values of the game that current players consciously or unconsciously appreciate. I will say that some parts of the game could use some clarity or tuturial to ease the new player into the game, or functions that simply isn't explained properly.
An example of this is the profile dampener skill/item. How does a 5% reduction actually affect the map detection? I have no idea what 5% actually means. Another example would be the matchmaking system. The game only says looking for battle etc. Are we matched against others SP values or is it completely random? Such lack of information could lead to false assumptions of an imbalanced game.
To round it up. With a strong profiled product playing to its strengths will please a limited crowd, but hopefully this crowd will continue to play the game in the long term, not to mention word of mouth advertising. Players who don't like the game will leave it, probably sooner than later, and it is not worth it to try and win them back as they didn't like the core product to begin with.
TL;DR Keep the game philosophy, but better communication. |

Im loving the posts guys, lots if constructive thought in this thread.
I agree that while new players shiuld take the time to learn about the game, CCP also didn't do a very good job of explaining much of anything to get them started, just like you need a good hook to catch a bigger fish, you need better tutorials or even a few added cinematic videos that are unlocked as you play the game. This way new players feel a little more connected to the world they've been dropped in while also learning the game and its backstory at a pace that isn't too overwhelming. Having a huge long 1 hour long turorial or a 30 minute movie before playing the game would not help, few players will actually sit throught it and those that do will probably lose most of the information after 5min. As of right now the game is a complicated mess for new players.
Help the new players stay intrested and I can see a prosperous future for this game.
Also, saw some people dropping out the knowledge in local this morning. I love you guys |
