It is infact game makers holding the ps3 from reaching its potential not the other way around. 256 X 2 RAM = The PS3 maxed out years ago. With that piddly amount of RAM, no game can "reach it's full potential" no matter what the CPU/GPU can do. Apparently Sony hasn't learned much either. IF the current rumored specs for both the PS4 and Next Xbox are to be believed, only 4 GB of RAM are coming to the next Playstation with Microsoft's machine having TWICE that. Also, Sony is definitely NOT waiting "to see what MS is going to do with their next console." A pre-E3 announcement from both companies and an E3 showcase of the next generation is a sure thing. I read something similar to that, too. Except the next Xbox has a lot of RAM reserved for OS functions. Giving the same amount as the next PS. Which is interesting. The current rumors are that the PS4 will use 4 GB of DDR5 and the Xbox will use 8 GB of DDR3. PS4 will be split into 3.5 and 0.5 and the Xbox will be split into 5 and 3 (for games and the OS). It being higher quality RAM (DDR5) makes up a lot of the numerical quantity difference. When including the rumored GPU and CPU, PS4 will have plenty of power for the next 5 to 6 years. Don't forget that consoles are highly optimized for what they do and get much more out of specs that appear to be below par. As for waiting for Microsoft, no, I doubt that. Many quotes come out of large companies like Sony that are often contradicting, especially when the different regional divisions act fairly independent of one another. Plus, it's just corporate nonsense, they often say things they don't mean.

According to information I read some time ago, I'm fairly certain PS4 isn't slated for release until late 2014 at least. Maybe they finally decided to upgrade the PS3 OS and/or graphics though? Would be nice. |

Seriously people. CCP already knew ahead of time about this. Why else do you think CCP went with the Unreal Tournament engine instead of their in-house Carbon engine? They are just waiting for Sony to give them the necessary tools for porting DUST over to the PS4. |

Maybe some of you are too young to remember but the first iterations of the PS3 could play PS2 games just fine.
I also read, though I will not dig to find it again to prove it to you, that it's already been stated that DUST isn't maxing out the abilities of the PS3.
You guys should find something else to worry about. it may be able to, but it also might not, the ps3 could play ps2 games but it had a pretty expensive chip that allowed it to emulate the games. the ps3 uses cell ( which is one of the reasons it was so much $$ at launch) the ps4 almost definitely will not.

I imagine their will be some cross play between PS3 and PS4 (even if it's using completely different architecture it should still work, I've seen other devs work on alpha builds where PC, PS3, and 360 were all playing together but they had to cut that out for retail version for obvious reasons). Eventually though they will have to focus their attention on the PS4 version.
my guess is that Dust will remain a beta till the next gens come out. we are running at 25% of total material CURRENTLY planed. EVE is a decade old. the amount of stuff they will be adding in the decades to come(CCP buisness model is amazing(aside from the monocle fiasco) and the new PS will, if nothing else, for convinences sake, make it easir on CCP)) will easily be more then the PS3 can handle. when sony anounces their next gen on the 20th(got beat last time by microsoft, doubt they want a repeat of that) we will know more |

gddr5 shipped for first time in 2008 on a video card. Graphics ram has different needs then system ram, so they use different stuff.
EvE had two clients needing different specs running at once on same server. EvE classic for older machines was dropped once the gap was two big and few people used it.
Dust will probably only look better and load faster on ps4 at first, once few people use ps3 and they really need more power ps3 will be dropped. 2016 or so probably. Like if they ever want 1000vs1000 teams on 10km square map, ps3 will be dropped. |

From what I've read a release date for the ps4 should be announced sometime this year.
As for Dust being ported to PS4, yes that is 100% going to happen, there is no way that SONY would leave Dust 514 in the DUST, this was mentioned before. I will try and find the information at some point today and pop a link in the thread for all that are interested. |

Observations:
1) PS4/Orbis will be announced this year. Only question is whether it will be available to buy globally in 2013, or even regionally (Japan) in 2013. (Fully expect to be announced before GamesCon)
2) Dust has been stated as leaving Beta this summer - It will thus be available before the PS4/Orbis
3) According to previous roadmaps, PS3 will likely EOL'd in/around 2016 (10 year total), while Dust514 (if it "sells" well) should be availbe at least until and including 2017 (5+ years) - Dust will then have to exist on PS4/Orbis, PC or elsewhere to achieve that
4) Moving from Unreal Engine 3 to Unreal Engine 4 (released July 7, 2012) should be relatively straight forward, and would account for the decision to use this platform for Dust |

What I'd like to know if is possible to improve Dust graphics with whatever PS4/Unreal4 allows, while keeping backwards compatibility with PS3. Anyone?
Technical feasibility is one matter, then the game also needs balancing. If Dust continues to have the atrocious frame rate it now has, but runs at 60fps 1080p on PS4, it would give a pretty significant advantage to PS4 players.

Short answer
Yes. PS4 and PS3 can have seperate graphics clients working on the same core of the game.
However for the sake of the MMO, they will not have seperate game styles, attributes, or xyz positiong of stuff (ie physics of blowing up a building in ps4 and its fragments hitting people in real time vs ps3 just making the building dissapear and generic aoe damage)
Bioling away however, this doesnt mean the ps3 current graphics stay where they are, as dust 514 develops thier assests further so does thier knowledge of both engines, and stuff learned from unreal 4 can likely see ports to a weaker degree to the unreal 3 side of the game.
Similar to how planetary shaders used in eve originated in dust 514, while not in use back in dust 514 yet, they're talking about bringing it back to generate terrain feel of a planet and with every planet in dust 514 uniquely mapped... well possibilities are nearly endless. |

Its been stated many times befor dust will be ported to ps4 and will continue to grow even with the ps3 still online.
If u read the sony blogs the ps3 has not reached even half potential it is not limiting any of its games and u can tell has when running the highest spec games on market if u touch the top of ur ps3 unless something was wrong with it it would still be cold to the touch if working at full potential it be warm or even hot to the to the touch. Now for the run search rant
This is about the fifth thread on this subject people run a dam search especially for an essy to find subject like this where u only need to search ps4 as it is basically none dust related and pops up in its own threads not all the other dust threads like snipers ars or dropships seriously now
I'm sorry, but there is absolutely totally no way PlayStation are waiting and seeing. Do you have any idea how long these new consoles have likely spent being designed, the work that would have gone into looking at manufacturers for components, making deals, making the software. Hell the dev kit is available iv read.
They are NOT sitting still to see what the Xbox will look like.
As for the ps3 not being tested, it obviously is. Its hardware is ancient now compared to what it was when it arrived, which even then was not jaw dropping. My gpu on my computer gets close to boiling point on certain games, the casing does not!
However I agree about running a search. All guilty of it sometimes though |

I see very little difference between how the 360 and PS3 run most games, so any accolades lauded at one can easily be heaped upon the other.
I do wonder how this will change in the next generation. Regardless of the arguments, the RAM difference is a biggie, as is the teraflop divide. Unfortunately I believe only exclusives will highlight the magic of each system. I want that illumiroom thing though, so I hope Dust stays on the PS3 for quite some time to come. |

With the close talks with sony and the long term life plan of dust that ccp have (10 years +) if ccp havent planned for moving dust on to ps4 and making it cross platform with the guys still on ps3 I would be very very very surprised.
CCP has made some stupid mistakes in past (boot.ini anyone remember that one) but they wont make a mistake like that. Dust will be on ps4 I will bet all the isk all my chars have on eve and dust combined.
p.s. looking forward to sony announcement on 20th bout time they moved one |

I don't even want a new engine for PS4 (yet) I just want a version of the game that doesn't fluctuate wildly between 30 and 10 fps and occasionally **** the bed if it's asked to load more than two textures at once. I will buy a PS4 for that. |
