One of the things I like about Dust is that it attempts to be immersive by trying to give the game mechanics a reasonable justification.
Drop uplinks are miniature, unstable wormholes. Respawns are really just newly activated clones. Dead bodies, destroyed structures and vehicles are removed using nanites.
But I haven't seen anything on what causes you to die when you wander into the "Red Zone" so here's my thought: In every battle, there is a non-biased arbitrator that is tasked with minimizing civilian casualties. So, before a battle they are all evacuated out of the area. Anything outside the area the arbitrator marks as a non-combat zone, punishable by termination. If you wander into the zone, the arbitrator has the authority and access code to activate the nanites that decompose you when you bleed out.
It doesn't explain why there's two different zones, each allowing one side to be able to spawn just out of reach. If there were two arbitrators, each based in the engaging MCCs that could work.
Any lore to back this up? |

The commander sees you leaving the battle zone. He thinks you're running away He gives you 20 seconds to get back to the fight You do not comply He detonates a mini bomb in your head and causes your clone brain to turn to mush.
Red zone has been explained, you're welcome.
Or maybe it is a game mechanic that isn't related to the cannon of eve. Deal with it. Not everything has to have a specific, lore reason for existing. |

Could be any number of explanations, but either of the two above sound pretty feasible to me, I like the idea of them attempting to reduce civilian casualties/damage to expensive facilities, though it is my sincere hope that once we continue along in development maps will be fleshed out further with more organic barriers to prevent us from leaving.
That may include small turrets mounted on the command ships that prevent dropships from leaving the area IE by shooting them down, reason being either the aforementioned prevention of damage/loss to sensor dampeners functioning well enough to escape detection within the battle area but not beyond, or too close to the enemy command ship. |

Maybe not even a commander, it could just be a preventative measure once you are past a certain distance away that the bomb goes off to prevent defectors automatically.
Or maybe in other situations as an automatic kill switch should a merc somehow be captured by a planetary militia or resistance or criminals. Your brain is still in that body after all.. you could do this to avoid torture/interrogation maybe? |

Part of it may be just a gameplay mechanic; the edge of the map is a red-zone so that it can be expanded or contracted depending on the mode and how many players are to be fielded. EDIT: Doesn't necessarily need to be explained thoroughly; it is what it is. We can guess why, though, and make up our own story behind it
Part of it probably is some form of desertion-prevention; before a battle you're given pre-defined "barriers" on a map that you need to stay inside to complete your mission...go outside (regardless of why) is considered deserting, and your implants implode after a certain amount of time.
Hey, at least its no Red-Line, the infamous "enemies have a ridiculously powerful minefield in your own territory that you never saw get put there yet cross the line and BOOM" zone... |

I like bomb idea, make it real bomb with stats of remote explosives, so if you are fighting in redzone your self-destruct may finish off target. Human wave suicide bomb rushing of enemy redzone would be entertaining when redlining enemy and not worried about deaths. |

I'd be happy if your clone lifted a gun to his head and killed himself :P you know, mind control, like the clone has gone rouge! trigger the kill switch!
This was also almost how CCP was going to make avatars act when they log off. That's why it says "no suicide in public areas" xP |
