oh vic a couple of idea's just for the homepage would be to shift the poll down to the bottom right, bump the guest writers etc section up to the top right and make the current article the central piece on the page. you should also change the background and text colour, make it look good and appealing, and remember presentation is very important, some examples would be

not really just think "what would it have to look like to make me want to read everything" it basically comes down to easy to use layout, attractive look/colour schemes, and catchy headlines which give you an idea what the article is about but does'nt give away the details |

meh I'm just basing what i know of a high school course in IT which touched upon website design as part of the course. and with the colour scheme just play around with different colours until you find something that fits. btw you might won't to move the backdrop so it appears both sides of the page it would look tidier that way. Also from the general squareness of the page and the annoying borders that appear at parts I'm guessing you used Dreamweaver to make the website?
