CCP is going to experiment with removing the SP cap entirely due to many complaints by the community. For those of you who have wanted the SP Cap removed, I am sure you will all be dissapointed with the results.
CCP wants Dust to have a lifespan of several years if not decades and that is only achievable if our characters cannot progress through the skill queue within the games lifetime.
There are many people who play dust endlessly and they will no doubt be the standard at which CCP restricts SP gains. As mentioned in another post I put together a few numbers that should demonstrate what SP gains could be like if CCP remove the SP gains and find that those who play endlessly progress through the skill tree too quickly. Lets look at the SP progression without a skillcap. Remember that SP wants this game to last several years, lets say 5 years to start with 20m SP. This is also with 4 games per hour.
No SP Cap - Casual player (2 hours of play each day): Each game is worth 171 SP. Obtains 2.5m sp over the course of 5 years. That amounts to gaining about one Lv1/Lv2 skill each year.
No SP Cap - Nolife player ( 16 hours of play each day): Each game is worth 171 SP. Obtains 20m sp over the course of 5 years (29200 hours of play)
Now, when you hit the SP cap, you need to remember that you aren't getting jipped out of gaining SP... You actually are getting as much SP as everyone else, you are just getting it quicker.
Removing the SP cap is only going to hurt the vast majority of the playerbase.

Daily cap BUT with rollover SP. Problem solved, thank you C saunders. Yeah the rolling daily cap is the savior on this one. It allows all the die hards to play everyday instead of just earning all their SP in one earnings like the weekly cap. But it allows players who miss days to make up that lost SP. |

Agreed. I'm a big fan of the rolling cap, especially since my play time is erratic. I played for like 9 or 10 hours on Saturday (daily capped all three toons), but that is really rare for me.
I would have preferred to stick with my main for more of the day, using up cap from other days.
With a rolling cap, I would probably never max out on the days I can play. |

Yes.
When your active SP per battle goes from like 5,000 to 50, that means you've hit your active SP cap for that character.
Right now it resets daily, it was weekly.
If you want to, it is allowable to quit the game and log back in using a different character (you have three slots). Each character has a separate SP cap. |

Passive SP booster allows you 50% more passive SP everyday. Not sure about the number, but i think you'd get close to 20k passive sp a day... |

If there is a cap, you can get X SP in Y time period. If there is no cap, you can get X SP in Y amount of grinding time. We currently have an appointment style built around the cap, removing it would cause grind. If that is what you meant to say, then by all means correct yourself, but having the cap removes grinding. It isn't an argument even, it just does.

i am for the removal of the SP cap. now before i go on...i should say, i am more of a casual player. i would play, 2-3 hours a day maybe...and maybe not every day.
the reason i believe that removing it is such a good idea is because it lets the people who work for their notoriety in New Eden earn it. There is no a shooter on earth (that i can think of) that has a cap.
as much as i hate the game, im gonna use it as an example. Call of Duty (commence the groans)
we all love to hate it at time, but think about it. does it stop the people from progressing in the game as far as their rep and unlockable items go? no, it lets the people who work for it get there because its why they are playing the damn game. a game that takes away your want to play isn't a fun game. What is there to work for?
Now, granted.....there are many more effect in Dust514 that just a win or lose result. You have an entire living breathing universe to effect, regardless of whether you use prototype armor or not. I understand and love the fact that this game is part of a living breathing universe where the players effect how the universe unfolds and behaves. Having an SP cap deters player from playing (esspecially FPS player because they have this "personal gain" mentality....hate all you like, its damn true!) and as a result, inadvertantly stops that part of the universe from living and breathing. It takes away the oxygen for a week, giving you just enough to live....and then opens the flood gate again for the refresh of SP to earn.
My final point, the only reason that people (include the guy who wrote the OP) want the SP cap in place is because is stops people from getting too far ahead. well you know what? **** that! we might aswell tell anyone who wants to start playing dust514 in 1 year to not bother starting....because they will get owned! how the hell is that a mentality that will make this game grow? We are all gonna branch off, find out way. thats what EvE is all about and so should Dust be. You find what you like to do. you do it. you find people to play with where what you do fits in well with the operations....and you be part of that unit! "oh no, that logi guy is only at 2m SP......on no cant have him"........you really think that kinda people who play this game the way it can be fully appreciated will be like that? you really think that eve players who play dust will be like that? HELL NO!
"oh crap guys, we really need a logi, this guy will be handy, and our matches will help his SP a little in the process" - THAT IS WHAT YOU WILL SEE FROM THE PEOPLE WORTH PLAYING THE GAME WITH! A team is a give and take relationship....not ME ME ME!!!
Remove the SP CAP and play the game YOUR WAY! as long as you do that, everyone else can play their way too and the world keep spinning. Enforcing this cap only accomodates the casual players way of playing. everyone else will then have to play THEIR WAY! NOT COOL!
i think that rant is somewhat constructive, and if you are taking some of the personally, i must apologise. i have been playing this beta since march of last year........ish.......and the SP cap (even for me who doesnt play all that much of the game) was the biggest hinderence in playing MY WAY!
Edit - i should also say, i am an EVE online player. i have been for about 4 years now, and the reason i love the game and the setting so much is because of the community. im sick and tired of the things that hold people back from a game that is meant to be dictated by the players. Such little faith in the people you play with should only ruin the game for "YOU" (mean the OP'er and other with the same thinking)....not everyone else |

Just felt like saying this, but EVE has a 'cap' as well due to the nature of the passive only SP system. My toon is a year and a half old, so compared to those who've been here sense the genesis, I may not seem that good skill-wise if you don't think about it. If you do though, you'll notice that thre are only X number of skills that make up Y specialty, and Z number of skills that effect your stuff in that specialty outside of the bare-bones X skills. My 1 1/2 year old toon has perfect mining skills because I chose a profession and stuck to it, and he can do decent fighting because I learned how to fly, even though my guns aren't the best.
In DUST, a player can be a starter noob, but he can just choose to put all his SP into Heavy Suits and HMGs and be equal in skills to the better players quickly enough because of the limited number of skills that effect the profession of HMG Hoovs. People who have been around for awhile, on the other hand, start finishing out their core for minor buffs or start working towards another specialty cuz, hey, maybe they feel like sniping every so often. And yaknow, skills aren't everythng. You have to have the personal aptitude for your profession as well, and that can overcome differences in equipment, SP, and rock-paper-scissors. |

There will be a grind.. CCP will need to substantally slow down SP gains. See the first post for an example.
Also, Daily or rolling SP or even weekly with rolling would be the best sollution. |

What about doing a Call of Duty-ish, Prestige mode? Let's say you hit a certain amount of SP, you're then given the option to continue on or you can reset your clone in exchange for a few ISK and maybe a special vanity Dropsuit or vehicle. For example, a solid gold Gun Logi. |

I agree with Dragon Grace. I do think there should be a cap that once hit slows or even stops passive sp, leaving the passive to help the casual gamer, and still allowing the hardcore to grind away for hours on end. By cap, I don't mean stopping in game sp, only the passive sp to be clearer. |

i agree with the rolling cap however i feel that booster timers should not count when you are under the affects of the cap i presonall play under 24 7 boosters and i hit my cap before 11 every day and the rest of the day is a waste of money |
