So, I'm planning to buy a SSD next month for my PS3 (now that I've learned I can use on with it). But not sure exactly what to do here.
I have plenty of room on my HDD so what I would like to do is save some cash by buying a smaller SSD (60gb-128gb) and only putting certain games (like Dust) on it. Then I could switch it out for the HDD when I'm not playing those games.
My question is...would it be possible to do this? Or will it reformat the drive every time I switch it?
Or....would it be possible to turn my HDD into an external drive and run games from it? That way I could just leave the SSD installed for playing my preferred games and also have the HDD installed externally to run other games.
I'm trying to avoid dropping $350-$500 on a 500gb SSD if at all possible, seeing as PS4/Orbis will be coming soon. I would hate to invest $500 into an upgrade for my PS3 when it's going to be passed down to my son as soon as the next gen releases. |

Why would you get a SSD? The PS3 Hard Drive connection doesn't provide bandwidth enough for you to get the performance value out of it. A much better purchase would be a 7200RPM or Hybrid HDD. Just my 0.2 ISK.
If you're dead set on the purchase you shouldn't spend more than however much PS3s cost these days on a single component. |

Well, you know....that's what I always thought too. This forum had me convinced otherwise, when several people here made comments on how much better a SSD performed in this game. Some of them a couple weeks ago were swearing to benefitting from an SSD by as much as 12 seconds. I found it difficult to believe but they were all quite convincing.
I actually never had any desire to get a SSD for PS3 until reading those threads praising the improved performance. Just never saw the need! |

SSD makes alot of difference if you look at Downloadable games you play.
Also the SSD speeds up your XMB alot, makes you able to send messages fast through the xmb and everytime i login it loads my friends real fast.
The only thing about buying an SSD is that you have to take into consideration the the PS3 is an old console, the SATA port (correct me if im wrong) only has a data speed limit of ~200mb i think? so you're better off buying a 64gb SSD then one of the more expensive ones on the market because SSD > MORE = FASTER.
If you can't seem to make up your mind just go Google ''SSD Ps3'' and you''ll find enough threads/discussions about this topic to make up your mind.
The only negative side i heard was that the SSD is supposed to be wiped of cache (or something like that) every few months and the ps3 doesnt have this option. |

They think ssd is better because ssd is faster than stock ps3 hdd, But if you were to put two ps3's side by side (one with ssd and one with 7200rpm/hybrid hdd) and simultaneously run them they would run exactly the same.

I had this same choice and went with the Hybrid 500gb. You will def. be able to tell the difference.
Example: I load into the MCC about 5-10secs faster than my squadmates with reg HDDs. When the match starts I am usually one of first to load in and have to wait 3-5secs for others. While good if getting spawned on, bad because I am running thru an area that hasnt been populatyed yet, so could get surrounded by spawn in.

Ya...I've built a few of my own. Getting ready for my next build in a couple weeks. Building a (my 2nd) i5-2500K system on an Extreme 6 MB. Trying to decide whether to buy a HD 7870 or 2 HD 7850s in Crossfire. About the same cost either way!
Anyway...I only started thinking about getting an SSD for my PS3 because of what I read in this forum. I just don't know whether I can have a HDD and SSD both on one PS3 and just swap them out when I want to use one or the other....or whether it will force a reformat every time I swap it.

Oh...well, I already have a 7200RPM HDD upgrade. Maybe I'll skip on the SSD then....at least until prices drop dramatically .
I still wonder though, whether I could have games loaded on both a SSD and HDD and swap the 2 periodically without being forced into a reformat.

Best of both. Get a 500gb hybrid for $90. I just did and its fantastic. Slightly slower then a normal SSD but not by much at all.

The benefit is seek speed. UR3 benefits a LOT from this, you will see a marked reduction in texture pop-in and other UI stutters. It also makes combat less laggy in certain situations. Go small. |

As someone who doesn't "build custom gaming rigs", but rather has done a lot of programming related to high-performance data transfers, I can say the above poster knows not a single **** of a rather more complex picture than assumed.

Everything I have read indicates that at best SSD give a 5 second or less improvement to load times. I my opinion that isn't enough of a difference to warrant the cost especially considering you have sacrifice capacity for the tiny speed boost. I have tons of games on my ps3. It would be impossible to fit even half of them on a reasonably priced SSD. |

I'm not sure the OP will be able to swop from SSD and back to HDD whenever he pleases. As I understand it, each time you put in a new HDD, the PS3 formats it. Maybe someone else can correct me if they have been able to do it. |

The HDD are not Hot Swappable on a PS3 because the System puts a signature on it.
I have had a 500GB and the stock 120GB put swapped the same day and they both needed reformated
the 500gb was taken out and the 120gb put back in... formatted the 120... realized i wasn't selling that ps3 so put my 500gb back in (maybe one hours time had passed) and it needed to be reformatted
did some research when this happened last year and found out the systems put signatures on the HDDs so you can't just swap HDDs between systems ( anti-piracy)
so you could do it if your ps3 was a frimware rollback hack, but you wouldnt be putting that online to play dust |

Dude, you may have a 300gb ssd that costs more than its worth (in excess of $4000+ for high end) but at the end of the day if you put it up against a high rpm hdd or hybrid you wouldn't know the difference. I've been building AND programming pc's for 20+ years and ssd's (especially in consoles, if you can get it to work) are no better than hybrids. |

oopps sry I missed that you said 7200 or hybrid, yes you wont see much of an improvement after an upgrade from stock.
ignore the rest of this unless you want to know the benefits from stock
aaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahhahahaha
you sir are wrong. any time you load textures (thats most of the time in the unreal engine) the ssd beats out stock every time. its slightly less critical this build, but my 1st gen ps3 with ssd still loads in faster then the newest stock ps3 by like 30 seconds and texture pop and "lag" are less noticeable(a lot of the "lag" in the last build was actualy waiting for your hard drive to spin up and send data).
to OP I would not suggest swaping harddrives all the time you are just adding aditional wear to your ps3 and you will eventualy just get tired of it, it doesn't help enough any more to make it worth continuously swapping back and forth. just get a 128-256, WTF do you need more space for right now any ways??
if you must have the space save up or dont bother to swap. thats my recomendation. |

I didn't belive it either but I had a spare ssd laying around and it sounded like a fun project, worth it! That said if you already swapped drives I don't think ssd is that much of a boost over a good fast STD HDD |

One issue with just sticking a higher speed drive in there is sony itself says that the ps3 may not support all 7200rpm drives, they don't say why, my guess is power draw, but if you don't download tons of stuff a small ssd, or a 5400 hybrid will show a marked difference is speeds. |

If you read my other posts on here, nowhere did I say ssd is not better than stock, of course ssd is better than stock! But ssd is not faster than high rpm hdd or hybrid. If you put a hybrid and ssd together both running, there will barely be any difference AT ALL. Extortionate prices for an ssd vs a hybrid that is within everyone's price range that gives 99.9% the performance of an ssd.....which one would YOU choose? |

WTF are you F***ing ... nevermind
SSD's work no problem in PS3s "if you can get it to work" <-- this proves your just talking ISH dude
SSD's shine in PS3s mainly because they have Max Sequential Read times of 280MBs(SATA II) to 550Mbs(SATAIII... not on PS3)
compare that to a 7200 rpm drive at 100MBs -180MBs
I cannot however put a SSD in mine because of the cost effectiveness/size so I have a 500 7200RPM WD-Black with a 64MB cache however I have installed SSDs in about 12 systems to date, these people want more speed and less space, and all of the INTEL SSDs come with 2.5 cradles and work perfectly fine in PS3's the 4KB Random Read isn't even a problem, hasnt been since about 3 years ago

The PS3 HD interface is SATA 1.5 with a transfer rate of only 185MB/s (probably lower due to overhead) so unless Sony have equipped the newest PS3 models with a better interface I can't stress enough the superior performance to value ratio of 7200rpm drives over SSDs in a PS3.
Just take a look at the Eurogamer or Gamespot hardware analysis breakdown and you can see the very minimal benefit that SSD provides, sometimes even barely better than a stock 5400rpm drive. It's still fair game if anyone wishes to pay for that slight upgrade. SSD does have infinitely greater longevity than a HDD so if you're lucky you may be able to re-use it for the PS4 or even just stick it in a PC and finally see the true benefits of it's speeds. |

@noraa I beg to differ. Because this game uses Texture-Caching (unreal dev kit UDK) the in-game loading of textures, will provide a HUGE difference between 7200 over SSD
but you know what I know it makes a huge difference. seen it myself plenty of times. Base specifications from a sata 1.5 loading Gran torismo doesn't show the difference in a game like this. or any other game that uses UDK as its base engine. I'm done arguing my point.
if you don't want to shell out the coin for a proper SSD then at least buy a Large Cache 7200RPM HDD |

@Heinz: Sony / PS3 does not support HDD with more than 9.5mm Height. AFAIK the only limit that exists.
@all: I would recommend a Hybrid drive. Same loading speeds as with SSD, but more storage room for a better price.
The SATA transfer rate is limited by SATA1 protocoll on PS3 and the transfer rate will NOT improve with a faster drive. However for seek time, PS3 will take full benefit of SSD/Hybrid.
In dust 514, with SSD, you load aprox 15secs faster into game. Marketplace / Fitting runs smoother and less lag / texture popups.
Ever noticed when you load into a new game, the war barge, and some people are running arround already? Those got SSDs
In XMB you get faster Icon loading. |
