The HDD are not Hot Swappable on a PS3 because the System puts a signature on it.
I have had a 500GB and the stock 120GB put swapped the same day and they both needed reformated
the 500gb was taken out and the 120gb put back in... formatted the 120... realized i wasn't selling that ps3 so put my 500gb back in (maybe one hours time had passed) and it needed to be reformatted
did some research when this happened last year and found out the systems put signatures on the HDDs so you can't just swap HDDs between systems ( anti-piracy)
so you could do it if your ps3 was a frimware rollback hack, but you wouldnt be putting that online to play dust |

I build custom gaming rigs and an ssd in a ps3 won't make a blind bit of difference. ^not this As someone who doesn't "build custom gaming rigs", but rather has done a lot of programming related to high-performance data transfers, I can say the above poster knows not a single **** of a rather more complex picture than assumed. Also I got my PS3 installed with a 300Gb SSD. Dude, you may have a 300gb ssd that costs more than its worth (in excess of $4000+ for high end) but at the end of the day if you put it up against a high rpm hdd or hybrid you wouldn't know the difference. I've been building AND programming pc's for 20+ years and ssd's (especially in consoles, if you can get it to work) are no better than hybrids.
WTF are you F***ing ... nevermind
SSD's work no problem in PS3s "if you can get it to work" <-- this proves your just talking ISH dude
SSD's shine in PS3s mainly because they have Max Sequential Read times of 280MBs(SATA II) to 550Mbs(SATAIII... not on PS3)
compare that to a 7200 rpm drive at 100MBs -180MBs
I cannot however put a SSD in mine because of the cost effectiveness/size so I have a 500 7200RPM WD-Black with a 64MB cache however I have installed SSDs in about 12 systems to date, these people want more speed and less space, and all of the INTEL SSDs come with 2.5 cradles and work perfectly fine in PS3's the 4KB Random Read isn't even a problem, hasnt been since about 3 years ago

@noraa I beg to differ. Because this game uses Texture-Caching (unreal dev kit UDK) the in-game loading of textures, will provide a HUGE difference between 7200 over SSD
but you know what I know it makes a huge difference. seen it myself plenty of times. Base specifications from a sata 1.5 loading Gran torismo doesn't show the difference in a game like this. or any other game that uses UDK as its base engine. I'm done arguing my point.
if you don't want to shell out the coin for a proper SSD then at least buy a Large Cache 7200RPM HDD |

Gaechti wrote:@Heinz: Sony / PS3 does not support HDD with more than 9.5mm Height. AFAIK the only limit that exists.
@all: I would recommend a Hybrid drive. Same loading speeds as with SSD, but more storage room for a better price.
The SATA transfer rate is limited by SATA1 protocoll on PS3 and the transfer rate will NOT improve with a faster drive. However for seek time, PS3 will take full benefit of SSD/Hybrid.
In dust 514, with SSD, you load aprox 15secs faster into game. Marketplace / Fitting runs smoother and less lag / texture popups.
Ever noticed when you load into a new game, the war barge, and some people are running arround already? Those got SSDs
In XMB you get faster Icon loading. You forgot to mention texture popin is significantly reduced. :) |
