The current tactical sniper rifle in my opinion still fires to slow for this type of fighting.
I always hear complaints of snipers just camping, but obviously low scout armor and slow firing limits the role of the sniper.
I suggest having a new tactical sniper rifle where It fires twice as fast 200 instead of 100 and does half damage as the current one. Say like 70-80 a shot. If you make it so it holds 5 bullets instead of 3 you can lower the damage to 40-50 a shot at militia lvl holding 30 bullets in a magazine. The range can be 300-400 meters since its for cqc.
Despite having low armor as a scout, with aid of speed and fire power from rapid shooting just like the scrambler, I think the close quarter sniper will be a successful role on the battle field. at least good at dealing with it's laser counterparts.
So, this would make snipers come out from under their rocks and take to the field. I know I would ; ) |

There's a little something called a tactical assault rifle; soon there will also be scrambler rifles.

Or I could 1 hit you from the mountains with a Thale and damage mods. My point is that too many snipers just Snipe from far regions of the map where more often than not 1 hit many players. Sounds like you guys prefer that option than facing a sniper in close quarter fights in close support with the squad. My opinion is that the current tactical is nerfed for the role it should play in the battlefield. No need to be hostile, besides I don't play CoD! |

If a scrambler rifle has prerequisits needing the sniper skill, ill probably use it, if not my idea stands as it concerns the sniping skills and not assult. |

There's nothing that prevents you from using a Thale while running with your squad. Any rifle won't be good for CQC. Long barrel = slow turning speed, more weight, and harder to maneuver with around tight spaces. Shotty/SMG/Pistol will always be the CQC weapon of choice.
I'm also not sure what the issue is. The tac sniper is fine for med/long range support.
FTwelve wrote:I always hear complaints of snipers just camping, but obviously low scout armor and slow firing limits the role of the sniper.
Maybe you shouldn't use a scout suit...

From the previous comments, I'm going to guess that you haven't been on the field with a rifle yet. So no, you probably wouldn't come out of the hills if you haven't at least once already. I bet if your Thale was free or cheap you might be more likely to. What it seems like you want is a much better rifle that costs much less. Asking for a buffed tac rifle is like an AR user asking for a huge range buff, scope, and a huge damage boost at the expense of how many bullets are in his clip.
Why can't you just use a SMG or Scrambler pistol for CQC, or grab a shotgun if that's what you want to focus on? |

I have to agree, your idea sounds like the tactical assault rifle. I would say your idea would be better if it was a sniper rifle with an ACOGish type scope on it, but once again its basically the tac assault rifle. |

Umm I use TSR for sniping and it is damn fast, people don't even have time to react before the second shot. I think what you are looking for is called an AR? I don't know for sure, but I think that should have a fast enough RoF for CQC. Also did the definition of a sniper rifle ever cross your mind? |

There are midrange frontline combat snipers. Those of us that snipe but like to stay in the front with our squad. Shorter scope/magnification, higher rof, significantly lower damage, larger clip, faster stabilization, significantly shorter range. They do exist as play styles and in actual combat zones. Sometimes I'd like that option.
Midrange support snipers get fewer kills more assists. Mid range support is a team oriented role. I think it would promote cooperative play. |

I initially did a double-take at the title of this thread, but apparently you're using an unconventional definition of Close Quarters Combat, which would more usually consider the bayonette a suitable weapon.
That aside, it's an interesting idea FTwelve, and lord knows I'd love to give snipers some incentive to move forward and support their team-mates more! But why a short-ranged sniper-rifle? isn't this the very antithesis of what a sniper rifle is all about?. And will it really encourage the current glut of "snipers" to move forward? I believe the attraction of this style of gameplay (for this style of player) lies in being way off in the hills away from the bulk of the danger - if they wanted to move forward and help, surely they'd be using Assault suits and some of the existing selection of shorter-ranged and higher RoF weapons?
Much as variety of weapons is great, I'd not want to see the sniper rifle skill become a catch-all which allows you to engage targets effectively at all ranges - that's really *not* going to encourage our glut of "snipers" to take on other roles! I always envisioned the sniper rifle skill being about calculating windage, controlling breathing, adjusting for dropoff and other long-range factors. Engaging close-in targets and controlling higher rate-of-fire wepons are surely better handled by the Assault Rifle skills (or, if very close-in, by the SMG skills). |

No need for another one.
Of course, you might need a better suit.

In my opinion the tactical sniper sniper rifle already servers it's purpose as one of the best counter sniper rifles. As for mid to close range sniping the standard sniper variant is all you should need, we don't want to make it too easy to run around quickscoping people. That leads to bad things similar to grenade spam
So no to the idea, sorry. But don't worry they are slowly coming down from the mountain. |

Thanks for your opinions guys, Oh well it was worth a shot. To be honest I was a MAG player and loved the HM90, I wanted that feel again on dust but the current tactical sniper rifles feel too slow and can't hold it's own in close quarters combat especially with 3 bullets a magazine, better hope they all hit or your toast. Unless the target is not moving the tactical is good at dispatching them since by the time they got hit with the first they drop with the second or third. But targets on the move from range it isn't as useful as the regular slower fireing but more powerful rifles since its all about timing. Tactical is not as effective and I wanted it to be better. The scrambler rifle sounds like it would be the closest to my idea of an improved tactical sniper but if its an assult skill I won't be able to use it. As I have decided to go with sniper. |

I get that mate. I'm referring to play styles and real life combat. Those types of snipers exist and I think they would fit into dust quite nicely for the reason behind the concept I listed.
ie. I like where the op is going with his way of thinking. |
