+1 and a bump, the first thing I have to explain to any friend I recruit is how to make voice work, and everybody is like "why doesn't it work by default, like voice in any other game?" well, that's a good question... |

Someone who doesn't know about the current state of voice chat settings might not be annoying. Someone who understands how voice chat works and have it set on may be extremely annoying. |

I hear what you're saying, but I don't think a purposefully obscure interface is a good answer to potential problems with the playerbase. |

I agree with Voice chat on by default but leave push to talk on as well. I don't want to hear the clueless blue dots.
My First day in beta back in June I got on expecting voice chat and was confused as to why it was not working. Having it off just adds to the confusion of trying to figure this game out. When it is on it is a lot quicker for people to start helping you figure out some of the more complicated parts of the game. |

Voice chat on by default but PTT on by default seems like a good compromise. |

Definitely something to consider. The game is only rated T in the USA though, so maybe an option (with a major suggestion) at the beginning instead would work better and keep CCP from getting yelled at too much. |

I don't see what your problem is, trying to ram a potentially negative feature down someone elses throat. Its unacceptable that someone be forced to listen to someone elses ranting, music, babies, body noises and then try to figure out how to disable it. If someone wants to listen to you rant and complain at them then they will turn on their mic and listen.
If anything, make sure the enchanced tutorials go over how to turn your mic on and off and gives you a 1 sentence statement that says, "Oh Hai, being able to communicate may help improve teamwork, results vary" |

So just to defend my point a little...
Voice on by default? Obvious. This just makes sense.
PTT off by default? Why are you arguing? Most annoying blue dots don't turn their mics on instantly, because they're idiots. If they don't turn their mic on, they won't be annoying you. Also, and more importantly, if they're that bad, THAT'S WHY YOU HAVE A MUTE OPTION. First, ask them to shut up. If they don't, mute them.
And for those arguing that swapping it is unfair on those who want it off, voice on is the industry standard for basically every current-gen console game that isn't DUST. The majority of multiplayer console games - not even just FPS games - default to having voice chat turned on. The majority of console games ALSO have no PTT support at all, let alone defaulting to it being off. There are enough PTT-enabled games for it to be reasonable either way, but I'd rather see it off by default than on, because it's more standard for a console game to not have PTT options at all than to have it default to being turned on.
Also, because the standard is so familiar to players, when you don't hear voices, the immediate assumption is that the game doesn't support voice. When you DO hear voices and would rather not, there's no rational person who would immediately assume that the game doesn't give you a "disable" option, but the reverse assumption makes sense with the way almost every multiplayer game with voice chat funcitonality has ever worked in the history of gaming consoles. |

Let me ask you this. When you started this game, did you not know that it had voice support? Or, did you understand it had voice support and you had to activate it? Your statement says the immediate assumption is that if it isn't there that you assume it doesn't have voice support. I am quite sure all those blueberries out there know there is voice support for this game. They just don't have it turned on. Considering the vast majority of people seem to have it turned off most the time, I fail to see why it should be activated.
When I started playing this game, I knew there was voice. And I didn't want it. I turned it on because I was curious and game after game would just be some random guy munching on potato chips, every time. The only time I enjoyed voice support was when I got into a corp. |

I turned it on because I was curious and game after game would just be some random guy munching on potato chips, every time. The only time I enjoyed voice support was when I got into a corp. I've had several friends start playing the game, and immediately ask me in our PSN chat "does this game not have voice?"
I knew there was voice, because like almost every other game I've ever played, I researched before picking it up.
If voice doesn't just work, most console gamers assume it isn't there.
If a game DOES support voice and you don't want it, most people assume they're going to have to disable it. If you don't want voice, then you're in the minority anyway, and default settings should cater to the majority, not the minority (as long as the minority is catered to OPTIONALLY, as in this case with a "disable" option).
Also, potato chip guy is a perfect example of why there's a MUTE FUNCTION. |

I actually don't know if I am in the minority or not. Most people probably won't ever open a forum page ever, so those who have signed onto this may be the minority. I don't know. However I made my point. You made yours. Good conversation. |

KAGEHOSHI Horned Wolf wrote:Dust 514 is a game in which teamwork is important to success, and communication is very important (if not vital) for teamwork. With this in mind, it doe not make sense why voice chat is set off by default. I have encountered many before in text chat complaining that their voice chat not working because they expect it to be set on by default (as it should be). This leads to unnecessary confusion for new players to deal with when the game is already hard enough for newbies to get a full grasp of. Please have it set on by default. This is a really old issue, and its not a huge task. Its about time this gets resolved. EDIT: This also Garrett Blacknova wrote: Also, push to talk should be off by default, and team chat should be the default channel on entering a battle.
Oh this again, Well, wth. +1
People NEED to hear their team mates on pub games. Those bluebarries... :|
