What annoys me about the whole Mayan calender thing is that nothing said the world would end, merely that it was the end of 1 period out of many periods, also its suppose to have happened already since the Mayans didn't account for leap years so the world was already suppose to end.
That aside, I'm very annoyed by the lack of the new build. I'm guessing patch notes will be out by the 21st, and patch out on the following tuesday (Christmas), but I hope its much earlier. |

Also, we're basing our belief off of a crude civilization that existed thousands of years ago? That slaughtered thousands of people a year for sacrifice?
Seems legit. |

1) They were not crude, they were a very advanced civilization for there time with greater astronomical knowledge than many European nations. They also had pretty great architecture, mathematical knowledge. The lack of draft animals available for agriculture and other labor made their advancement even more amazing.
2) You are thinking of the Aztecs, who did sacrifices to 1 of the 4 Tezcatlipoca gods (that one's name starts with an H, was acting as the the current sun god for this version of the world) because he needed sacrifices as energy drinks to feed him so he could fight off the star and moon gods trying to kill him (day vs night). Europeans exaggerated accounts of human sacrifice to make them appear like savages, and thus make their conquest more legitimate.

Not sure where you're getting this info from, maybe you're thinking of a different civilization, but Mayans used 2 calendersl 1 with 366 days, another with 360 days. I checked 3 sources right now, and never saw any mention of of 400 day years. There are cycles of 400 day years though (a baktun). |

Too bad they were incredibly intelligent, and we STILL slaughter thousands of people a year for sacrifice, just in a different way. We're quite a ways behind the ancients, in many regards. |

... *sighs* ...
So what, you think intelligence guarantees a civilization will always thrive? Do you think the ancient Romans were idiots because their empire collapsed too? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classic_Maya_collapse Just start from here, read some of it, look at some of the references, that is if you're actually interested in the answer, and not just asking just to be contrarian.
And once again, in regard to the massive scale human sacrifice, that was Aztecs, not Mayan. |

Actually, the Mayan Calender is based on 365.XXXX ('X' meaning the decimals) days per year. The modern-day atomic clock is accurate to about 365.XXX0 days per year. The millionth decimal, as per scientists of today, is calculated to be off by a margin of +/- 0.0005. Therefore, even modern scientists have no clue which is most accurate: the Mayan Calendar or ours?
The Mayans were no fools. They dedicated their entire lives to understanding how the stars moved. They even back dated their calender to about 3112 BC which is long before their own civilization even began its infancy. What kind of civilization so advanced decides to base their calender on an year or date that happened so long ago? And why create a calendar that will outlast even their own civilization? |

In relation to sacrifices, I believe the Mayans embraced sacrifice so much that even their own kings were willing to cut their own genitals as a payment to their gods. They even had a sport that is similar to soccer in which the winner, not the loser, would be the one to be sacrificed. To them, death was only the beginning or the continuation of a spiritual journey of the cosmos. Or was that the Aztecs that had that sport? I forgot which one did. |

Sacrifice was indeed a large part of Mayan culture, but the massive scale sacrifice of human lives (not just bloodletting or sacrificing monkeys) has been wrongly attributed to them; yes they did do some human sacrifice (as in killing humans, not just wounding), but not to the extent that people seem to think they did. Not really sure, but I know many Mesoamericans had ball games which had greater ceremonial meanings and purposes. I know the Aztecs definitely had one. I think you are right however, sounds like something I heard before. |

The Mayan calander is just another calender. Just like our calander ends on December 31st and begins all over again on January 1st, the Mayan calander is exactly the same, just on a larger scale. Hollywood 'end of the world' movies are one of the many contributions to the December 21st theory and should be taken with a pinch of salt, end even if it DOES happen.......embrace it and come to terms with the fact that we would face a major stats reset that would put dust 514 to shame.

Ever occur to anyone that maybe the Mayans just got tired of extending their calender? I mean most of our current calenders end in 2099. Unless of course we too have the power to predict such events. |

Yea, I'm always worried about insulting extinct civilizations.
Maybe their ghosts will haunt me because I made a politically incorrect statement generalizing their use of human sacrifices.

I'm not worried about dead people being offended, I'm worried about what this misinformation says about the general level of knowledge of people, especially when they really think they know something. Its not abut "political" correctness, its about general correctness, when someone says something which I know to be incorrect it bothers me, and when many people believe that incorrect claim, then it worries me because it shows larger widescale educational problems. Its like how so many US Americans can't find their own country on a map (though in this case its not that severe).
Actually, Mayans are still around today. They are a very large ethnic group, and many of them retain the same practices and beliefs as their ancestors. Its impressive how people can keep showing how little they know. |

The Mayan calendar ties to the movement of celestial bodies. The calendar ending is just that, the end of one and start of next.
It's when the solar system crosses the galaxies center-line. Albert Einstein found this to happen on same date, but when asked what would happen he answered nothing. Same way nothing happens when you cross the equator or on the solstice or equinox twice each year. It's a trivia thing and something to measure time by is all.
In Europe they had doomsday predictions at the year 1000, since they would run out of digits, a minority of Mayans probably had same idea for needing to start the calendar over and we just found the inscription. The majority of the Mayans would probably think it was silly to think the world would end because of the calender running out, same way most in Europe figured they could just add another 1 to the date, or put the m in a different spot since it would have been roman numerals back then. |
