First and foremost, I have finally got into the DUST 514 beta which i have waited for since they announced it in E3 at 2009, so right now i am ecastatic, but what i did not accept from all my excitment and anticipation was that this game is going to be a challenge to get used to it. My first trouble- During my breif playthrough(getting longer play time the coming weekend) I picked the sniper dropsuit available in the defualt fitting, and well long story short I died before i could get a shot in. My question is which fitting should i pick from the dropsuit in order to give me a fighting chance? My second trouble- Since i had a short window to play this game i let the battlefinder choose my battles for me, and well i think it put me in Ambush not sure though, but my question is what gamemode should i pick to play so i can be effective and get used to this game quicker? And also should i let battlefinder find games for me or should i manually pick and choose? Any suggestion and reasons why, would be helpful My third dilemma- Well this problem is a Yes or No but in the other shooters that i have played COD, BF, etc, you can customize your controls to best fit you and I have found to like the BF3 controls the best. Since this game feels more like Battlefield 3 in terms of size, is there controls that are similar? Also while we are on controls can you change the sensitivity?
During my short session of DUST 514 i have: enjoyed it, become frustrated, and eager to play more. I cannot wait to experince more of what this game can offer and if you could answer the qestions above, it will make my transition and getting accustomed way easier. As i get more questions i will be sure to post them in here.

I can only answer the first two questions. For now you should use the 4 starter fittings that are completely free to use. Theyre not great or perfect, but they work fairly well.
1. The sniper is pretty obvious in its use. If youre not an accomplished sniper in other games then this game will be no differant for you. In this case you should probably avoid the sniper suit.
2. The assault (or frontline, I forget what its called offhand) is your most versatile suit and should probably be the one you use the most. It has your standard assault rifle go out kill and die build to it.
3. The triage suit is good for if you like to play medic. You also get two guns with the suit, an assault rifle and a smg.
4. The other one that I forget whats called also (lol this is terrible) is your anti vehicle suit. Thats really all that fitting is good for. So if theres a lot of vehicles annoying the crap out of you, jump in that and have some fun.
Find out what you like to use most from these and start skilling into those areas.
As for the battlefinder, you can choose either ambush or skirmish. The system automatically does everything else for you.
1. Assault is your basic go shoot and get shot at mode. Thats all you do. I dont really like to play this mode myself because the spawn points are often completely random so half your deaths end up being from you spawning in front of the enemies barrel.
2. Skirmish is more of a capture the flag type deal. I prefer this game mode most so far because theres more too it than just point shoot kill. You can advance by gaining points capturing points, gun installations, supply depots, and also regular old killing.
Hope this helps some. |

I am about to read everything and I will then know every dirty little secret, and before you know it I will be catching up to you. So be warned, once i read the manuals I am abouts to be unstoppable. They don't call me BLOODYYY for nothing you know, before i used to be a mercenery like you then i got shot in the knee cap. Now it's all bloody and stuff, can't wait to bloody yours... |

Your answer has tremendously helped, now i know that I should stop trying to use the sniper without getting accustomed to it yet, i just thought that it was a OHK. Also i will probably use Assualt and i don't know if CCP will add better sights like the one showed in 2009. Other than that can't wait. What I am asking in the third question is, can you change your sensitivity in Dust? I cannot stand that slow turning, it feels too weird for me, a player who is used to fast turn ons (not sexual but an opponent is shooting at your back and you just turn around and OHK him with the sniper. BAM TURNED ON).

Im still kinda new as well so Im not completely familiar with the control options. Best answer I can give is just get in there and play with it. The sniper can be a OHK on certain people especially if you add damage mods, but even the highest damage sniper rifle likely will never OHK a good heavy suit fit. Id honestly drop the sniper idea, theres always way too many of them in games as is and the sniper rifle in this game sounds to be very far from what you are looking for. |

You should add me (PSN name is same as DUST name,) if you have a mic we can talk and you can help me pick out the best type of dropsuit. If not a sniper i am looking to use a logistics type of dropsuit as not only does it look sexy, mean, and dangerous but it is also best of both worlds(ability to heal people and vehicles), what says team player more than any other dropsuit but a logistics suit. I am looking to fit that with an assualt rifle and see how i cope. Cannot wait for the weekend |

Welcome aboard Bloody,
Glad to have you here. Now from what i gather so far it sounds like your set on being a Sniper, which is not my forte but i have learned alot about it from friends and some small self experimentation. First off your using the Basic of Basic Dropsuit fits which you've no doubt gathered from the big "Starter Fit" text next to your Dropsuits name in the Dropsuit menu. This means your using the weakest of the weakest fits out there and while ultimately skill is what determines how well you do, having a better Dropsuit and fittings helps tremendously.
If you want more a better rate of survival you have a couple optoins available. I don't know you exact situation pertains to you dying before you get a shot out but i'll cover as many bases as i can.
Counter Sniping - If your being sniped before you can snipe then you need to get better at hiding in places where other snipers can't find you. Pay attention esspecially to what they hit you with. If they're using a Militia Sniper rifle like you are then you have a chance. But if they're using a gun with a name you've never seen then it's fair to say that even if you try to shoot them from a long distance your not going to be able to hit them unless you get closer. Which, needless to say, is even more dangerous and takes you even farther away from your original purpose.
CQC (Close Quarters Combat) - Just don't. In a starter fit, with a sniper rifle, it'll be a kitten miracle if you manage to kill somebody before they kill you. Unless your just godly with a Scrambler Pistol.
Vehicles - They're kind of the bane of infantry and designed to be as such so i have no real advice for them other than AV grenades. If you'd like you could search for my "How to take out a Tank, for Logibro's" topic here in the training grounds and see if you can adapt it to your situation.
The battle finder is Currently the ONLY way to access battles atm. You select one of the two available game modes that we are testing (ambush and skirmish) and it sends you into a match where there is room for you, be it a match that is almost completed or a match that is just begining. As a sniper who is just starting out i'm not really sure WHICH exactly would be better. In skirmish there are objectives that need to be Taken/Defended so you'll always have an idea of where to find targets, but you'll be competing with other snipers and there is usually alot of ground to cover and Vehicles to deal with. In ambush there are less likely to be Vehicles and other snipers but that is because no objectives means no reason to defend which means that everybody is going to be constatly moving and it's going to be more difficult to add a notch to your rifle. In the long run that might make you better.
As far as i know, there is not a way to change the Control Schematic for Controllers. I for one, approve of the default controls but can understand that everyone has a preference. Also, there is a way to change Sensitivity in the options portion of the NEOCOM but it doesn't change how fast your character turns in any direction. Only how the game reacts to your moving the analog stick. Movement in all forms is controlled by the type of Dropsuit you use. It goes...
Scout > Assault > Logistics > Heavy = SALH (scout being the fastest)
I hope my huge wall of text helps.
P.S. I can't provide any links. But i'm sure there is some Sniper Specific posts here in the training grounds as well as useful information provided everywhere here.
Again, Welcome to DUST 514 and i look forward to saving you from the icy grip of death SOON.
Keep the faith. |

So I have been doing some research and as you Snipe you level up your skill points for that class, and you can spend those SP on the sway, accuracy of the weapon you are using. You can also buy better suits to handle more HP so you can add some slots into your suits~Your Brother |

Keep the faith. Do not worry, your so called huge wall of text has enlightened me and also the part that i quoted especially is a shocker for me, not being able to control how fast you turn. As i think more about it it starts to makes sense, a heavy dropsuit would be gunning everyone down as soon as he sees where he is taking damage from and it would not even be fair, but since it turns very slowly, now the scout can run circles around the heavy, shooting him and eventually killing him. Way to balance this game CCP, you surprise me yet again Kudos. |

some other things to remember
- Don't be upset if you sink all your ISK into expensive fits and lose them in battle - that's the way it works, don't fight in what you can't afford
- Do consider joining a corp - This will give you on-hand experience, support and team mates to play with regularly
- Do use squad / team comms - even just to listen if you have no mic, as almost all players here get frustrated by team mates not fighting as a team.
- Don't forget that this is a beta - there are bugs, snags, imbalances etc. Just write a well thought out, clear report on the issue on the relevant board. CCP do listen. 10 years of Eve show that even though they may get it wrong sometimes, they do want to make a good game.
- Do read through this board, think of it as tactical intel as much as a place to hang out.
- Don't forget this - Do have fun.

you get skill points at the end of each match based on how effective you were. you even get skill points when not playing over time. the skill points can be spent anywhere they are not based on your class.
if you already have a skill, you pay SP (skill points) to upgrade from level 1 to level 5 (it gets more expensive with each level)
if you don't have a skill started, you need to purchase the skill book for a one-time ISK amount and then use the skill book to start your skill at level 0. * some skill books also have a requirement of other skills first. it will show in the "prerequisite" section of the info. |

I didn't see anyone answer this directly.
Regarding controls...
In the Mercenary Quarters pressing L1 and choosing "System Operation / Options" with X you find a set of menus you can use to configure controls.
