For all you know, that electricity could be generated by some new energy source we haven't imagined yet, or it might not even be electricity at all, but something else that just sounds like that.

Why does "something else" have to be electric? Hydrogen combusts too and doesn't require the molecular decomposition you have an issue with. Electric cars could very well be obsulete bc the conversion of electrons to mechanical work may never be able to drive around the mass of these future vehicles. It's quite basic really, a battery would have a real hard time driving a dust LAV considering a modern humvee weighs 5-10 tons.

As for your comment about batteries, for all you know, a battery in EVE/Dust times could power a current modern city

Considering they are single shot that is a good thing. The current sound of the LAV is really sweet. It is a turbine type of sound which is more consistent with running on different planets versus a diesel or other internal combustion anachronism. If your squad is using mics, adding fake chatter would be detrimental and eventually we all should be using mics. Also, I personally cannot stand that fake chatter in FPSs. There is never much memory for enough variation in fake chatter in most games and sooner or later you get to hear that one phrase for the three hundredth time. Then, you will be like me. I always want a mute button on the fake chatter and inane NPC commenting solutions out there in Video Game Land. Argh! Now you made me think of Gears Of War and their rotten voice acting! A pox on you!

You have to admit there seems to be enough people on both sides of the coin. Some want big booms and some want future sounds. Would be clever of CCP to further distinguish between races with opposing engine sound styles

Yes. However the projectile was fired by rail. The sound is caused by shock wave of the round plus the heated plasma and vapors from the rails disintegrating. Problem with rail guns, especially the big ones like that so that have been built is the rails only last a few shots. Too fast of a heat build up from firing for one along with having to use light weight soft metals.
