Dropships aren't overpowered, they are actually rather well balanced. The main thing people fail to notice is the fact that it requires a great amount of skill to successfully pilot a Drop ship while avoiding swarms and forge guns. As well as the fact that they are rather wimpy in terms of health and shields. If swarm launchers were fixed in terms of pathing and speed(keep the limited range) Dropships would have a slightly harder time staying in the sky. I'm slightly sick of a lot of people complaining about Dropships raining missiles on them. Tough ****, welcome to dust 514, if you don't like it then spec into swarms or forge guns, or buy a viper and suicide into that other Drop ship. There's other methods of taking out a Drop ship instead of pulling out a broken piece of equipment and then complaining know the forums because it won't take out the drop ship. And that they need to be nerfed. Just because some guy put hard work and a **** ton of isk in order to rain that fire upon you. |

my assault suits cost roughly 125k isk each, my forge suits cost like 175k. , enough about my ship costs this this this. It doesnt require a blue angel TOPGUN pilot irl to pilot a dropship in this game.. avoiding swarms currently is not that skillfull as you do not dodge them, they wrap around you and then give chase. I agree it is not actually the dropship that is OP, it is the current ability to field endless OP missiles fom the sky with little threat from swarm, and a forge gunner lights up like times square on christmas/new years and is then shot down by 2 hits of splash before he has got his gun pointed up all the way. We don't really need your ship messed with, we need the weapons ability it has tweaked. |

well to be quite honest, if in fact they did go extinct it would do better for game balance than what we have currently. However I am not wishing them to go extinct nor anyone else, as they are a cool feature to this game. Yet that does not mean they should have the ability to traverse the skies with little to no threat while being the biggest threat out there. Minimise the power it has in the air , fix the flight physics of the dropsships and the swarm launcher pathing. A complete overhaul on missile turrets would make tanks on the ground a little less protected , as it stands their missiles are not a huge problem like the dropship as the tank isnt firing from above except on certain maps where they are still stationary and exposed. And since to many people seem to not like the idea of removing missile turrets from dropships, I am now suggesting that dropships should have passive bonuses and penalties tied them along the lines of reduced turret damage output while increasing base resistance and shields ( make it kinda like a drake in eve ) example : -25% turret damage , +5% resist per lvl of whatever the skill is to get a better dropship, and 2% more shield per lvl of same skill. |

Dropships being OP will be a thing of the past as soon as CCP releases the deployable support gear like the swarm and forge gun turrets. |

Try it against any corp or team that has any experience. Fly in a circle and see how great that works. Dropships are powerful against a team of randoms yeah but so is every other vehicle. Slaying randoms doesn't take skill, slaying good corps does. If you nerf dropships they won't be an option in more competitive play. Hard enough as it is. Hate DPs then spec AV. |

Randoms aren't capable of coordinated activity. There are several active threads complaining about the incompetence of blueberries. Effective AV requires coordination, ergo public matches pose no real AV threat.
A dropship physically enforces team coordination. You have a pilot and two gunners in one vehicle and they are very effective based on that. An AV team composed of three forge gunners and a logibro could one shot a fuly speced dropship if they coordinated thier effort. One moment I'm flying at this objective, then 3-2-1-Fire, and with no warning I'm going down in flames.
You could even put one forge gunner in each squad and have them physically spread out. All they would need is line of sight and an audio link. That is entirely possible in corp battles, but you won't see that level of coordination in what amounts to Mercenary Team Deathmatch (regardless if it's Ambush or Skirmish mode).
The short of it is you can't have ANY coordination requirements in public matches. |

Agreed with Sklhlds, it takes 2-3 people working together to make an effective dropship, it should take the same to bring it down. |

A dropship handles like a brick on a string and is slow to respond. Not to mention any kind of hit will throw it over onto it's side where up becomes down and then you explode especially the proto swarm. I'm afraid of those, while it probably wont kill me the inertial damage is so sever I can end up upside-down. With the sluggish response times on the controls there's no way I'm recovering from that. This forces to keep me moving which throws gunners aim off. Sure some gunners are so talented I don't know how they do it but the same is said of certain players who kill everyone all the time with their assault riffles.
In many maps they're fairly easy to hide from and if you're talking to your squad they're easy enough to bring down. Or, at the very least a forge gun or two will force the drop ship to avoid that part of the map. If the door gunners aren't calling out swarms and forge shots to the pilot we're toast. Visibility while flying a dropship isn't so good since I can no longer pan the camera around and the up-down viewing of the right stick is also my rudder I could send myself spinning.
I'm almost always flying a dropship since my ground game is garbage (as many of you probably know through the immense satisfaction that comes with destroying a vehicle and killing the crew) and I only bring it in if the squad I'm in has capable gunners. I've flown a few times with poor gunners and usually get shot down since they can't hit anything while I'm moving which swarms force me to do.
Ideally I'd have 1 gunner and two guys on the ground hunting forges and swarms as my gunner calls them out. They keep me safe from AA and I clear their path.
As an experiment I called in a dropship while I was in a pub game. Most blue-dots wouldn't even get in and when one would they'd shoot at the easy targets not the forge guns so I get shot down eventually. Terrain and slow evasive maneuvers still wont help against a skilled and patient forge gun. For the sake of this test I repeated it 3 times loosing all 3 dropships.
I've spent about 2 million sp and lost so many drop ships learning to fly it. If you spent a quarter of that and kill me a quarter of the time I think it's fair. I've been on the receiving end of this too and the counter is a swarm to keep it moving or wait for it to over and forge the crap out of it. Yes you'll need some cover to keep other infantry from killing you but it's a team game. Don't expect to do everything solo.
But for those of you who haven't played Eve may I suggest this helpful "Training Video".

*Edit
Why has no one tried putting a small rail turret on a LAV? I know they have shorter range and lower dmg then a missile but it hits almost instantly so you'd actually hit it. It would also cost less then a heavy suit+forge and be much more mobile. |

Dropships handling really needs to return to Precursor responsiveness. I know CCP nerfed handling requirements to apease the general population and make them easier to fly by newbies, but that just made them less capable for experienced pilots.
Yes lone forge gunners will have a hard time soloing a dropship, but that's as it should be.
I've yet to run into a pair of forge gunners working in concert in a public match, let alone three. I know what a trio would do to me and it wouldn't be pretty. Just two coordinated shots would have me down to armor and leave me open to the takedown shot by one of pair.
it's not a matter of being OP in general, it's a matter of a complete lack of coordination in public matches. It's all lone wolfing or zerging except for the occasional corp squad that enters as a team. |
