Hi,
I am at a point in the game where I think I need some guidance and advice. So I've donned my flame retardant merc suit and have braved the forum.
- I have around 2,280,328 Skill Points, set up as shown below.
I was wondering what advice you might give to someone at this sort of level. I am not very good at the game and have just had my best SP gain of around 27k, however my normal gain per match is somewhere a lot closer to 10-15k, so I need to spend my points carefully as they are not easy to come by.
The Laser Rifle is my favourite setup currently but I am happy just being in the game so can put points into anything really. I quite like Sniping and am pretty reasonable at it too. Therefore I was thinking that pushing Sharpshooter up would be a good move.
I am somewhat limited by ISK income, though, that does seem to be growing with the new build (like everyone else I imagine). Though, I'll address the ISK in a mo.
SKILLS:
Demolitions: 1
Dropsuit Command: 3
Infantry Electronics: 3 Infantry Electronic Upgrades: 1 Profile Dampening: 2 Sensor Upgrades: 2
Infantry Engineering: 3 Infantry Shield Management: 3 Infantry Shield Operation: 4 Infantry Shield Upgrades: 2
Light Weapon Capacity: 2 Light Weapon Rapid Reload: 2 Light Weapon Sharpshooter: 3
Assault Rifle Operation: 3 Laser Rifle Operation: 4 Sniper Rifle Operation: 2 Weaponry: 5
Amour Upgrades: 1 Infantry Mechanics: 4 Infantry Repair Systems: 2
- How do I know when I am ready to step up into more expensive suits? I have a KD ration of 0.39 and my suits are either entirely BPO or cost a maximum of 6000 ISK. I generally bring in around 50-80,000 per game.
- I've just seen someone go 54 and 0 in a game. How is that kinda stat possible?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
Regards

Just use missile turrets on a dropship or use a missile tank and camp in ur spawn and shoot to other side of map(this has been pretty popular lately).
As for your suit and knowing when to upgrade its up to you. Make suits you know you will be able to afford. Also keep an eye on what the enemy team is using, if they all using militia fits and its not a great team, bring out ur own cheap suit. If you notice the other team has a lot of decent players and they are using Adv/Proto suits bust out your better suit for a better chance of staying alive(also remember your in a good suit so dont die easily or u down $).
But really in the end its up to you and how you decide you want to do stuff. The good thing about being in this beta is you can try out many different suits and such cause you know you will be wiped anyway.

Funnily enough, I almost run the reverse at the moment. As soon as I see I am up against the Frenchies.... I switch down to my all milita gear....... Can't afford to lose 15 suits to those chaps.

One of the most important skills in the game is situation awareness, and unfortunately you can't upgrade it with SP.
What I'm trying to say is that when you choose your fights clever and don't always move in the direction where the red chevrons are you'll have a much better survivability and will thus make a lot more profit per suit, which then in turn allows you to choose betters suits with better gear and still be profitable.
Once a sizable portion of your ISK per match are profit you can upgrade your suit and kit it out with the fancy stuff. Then see whether you're still running a profit and if so, look at what toys you'd like to equip next and plan your SP accordingly.
Regarding your skill layout: Infantry mechanics, shield management, weaponry, light weapon secondary skills, all looking fine. Nothing obvious missing, though once you're looking to use better gear you'll be looking for electronic and powergrid upgrades. |

If I want to start upgrading, does it have to start with the suits?
I'm using Militia suits currently, does the next step require points in the relevant race?

You could do what a lot are doing now and just use AUR. That's one way to stop worrying about losing ISK. Definitely seems to work for some. |

You need to focus you skill tree in your main role don't try other stuff until you know want you want to be test it out then you can try out other things. To me maxing out the passive skills is a priority, by passive skills i mean the skills that gives you permanent bonus like increasing you armor/shield HP, recharge rate, weapon damage and CPU/PG if needed.
The most important thing is to play with friends in squad so i advice you to find a corp first, good luck and keep testing no need to worry about other going 100-0 you can do it when you find your perfect fit beside currently most of the people who go 30+ kills are using vehicles.
EDIT: when you want to upgrade your stuff start with your main weapon e.g. use advance AR on militia dropsuit. |

What is your personal skill set? i might be able to group up with you sometime to help you out. If you aren't very good at aiming try moving to closer ranged weapons. If you aren't very good at tactical positioning get some practice in reading the map, it can make a big difference. |

Thanks for the replies chaps.
I prefer mid to long range and it was suggested I try the Laser weapons. I started with the Tactical Rifle that allowed me to snipe at fairly close ranges, but I think as people level up and leave me behind I struggle to make an impact with it now. It takes me 10 or so shots to take someone down in it and by that point I'm either dead or they are not there any more.
The Laser was a step forward for me. The range is nice, though I think I'll work on the bonus to range some more. But also the ability to just brush over a target as I over and undershoot whilst still applying damage seems to work. It has certainly improved my targeting now as I can move back to the militia AR and hit quite well..... sadly again though I don't seem to be able to apply enough damage to take anyone down with it. This always strikes me as odd as I get taken down regularly with the militia rifles.
I really appreciate your offer of squading up with me and I'll try and get setup to do that. I had problems setting up my BT MIC yesterday, but I think it might have resolved itself with a restart today.
I feel I am kind of at that point where I think moving up some gear will make a big difference. I'm not talking about taking me to 20 kills or anything, but might just push me into a positive K/D ration. Recently I have been at around the 3/5 mark.
All that said........ I am brand spaking new to FPS so my talk could be as bad as my aim ;)

You got some good advice above but I will add this - treat your fits like you are running a small business and be honest with yourself on your abilities, your strengths and weaknesses. Think about the situations you succeed in and those that you struggle with. My attitude is that most anyone can be a positive contributor, killing is just one aspect.
If you feel you need more stopping power then carry on skilling in your weapon of choice. If you need more survivability then work on shields and armour. Look at how much available CPU/PG you have in your current fits and whether it will allow a better gun/mods...you have a further 10% you could skill up for CPU/PG. The suits are about (since the change) slots and more CPU/PG, shields and armour are the same and of coarse the higher cost. Once you've maxed what you can fit on a BPO suit and you feel you are being effective and efficient then look at stepping up to a higher suit. Remember militia gear can still kill proto it's just tougher.
Just be cost effective, you know your average ISK gain so you know how much you can afford to lose...try to stay in "the black" while still saving some ISK for skill books.
Assuming you are running solo the laser rifle can be a challenge to finish guys with unless you are an absolute surgeon with it (one of my guys is), it will drop shields fast but has a harder time taking down armour, you would have an easier time working with a squad.
You are welcome to send a Dust mail and squad with us. And remember it is a beta so don't worry too much about trying to follow a direct path like you should at launch...don't be afraid to try out different things.
Good luck. |

Hi,
Just wanted to post back to say thank you for all the support and advice.
I upgraded my gun to the blindfire and WOW..... what a difference. I just went 11/6 which is by FAR my best game ever. Others havent been quite so good, but when I'm not backed up against the MCC with snipers aiming at me, I am now in a positive K/D.
Will run around with this for a little while longer (rest of kit is milita, so I only spend 50Au) per death!!!
Thank you very much for all the solid advice!!
