First of all, I like it. I really do. I think it is exactly what it is aiming for, I like the hacking aspect of it. I like the vehicle drops and everything and I definitely think once the game gets SUPER polished it will be a blast.
So thoughts as I was playing.
1) Not sure what map I'm on, the instant battle/loading screen menu didn't really tell me or I didn't really know where to look 2) You turn slower when you are crouched than when you are standing, I wonder if that is for a reason or if is just not supposed to work like that
3) Some clippin issues when walking around corners of buildings
4) How many players is supposed to be in a full game?
5) I think it takes way too many bullets to kill someone. I get having a shield and everything, but I think the amount of bullets it takes to down someone should be within the one standard clip range
6) The "stamina" bar thing is kind of annoying, but I get the purpose of it
7) When trying to melee, sometimes I would press the button and it would not work, I don't recall if this was a part of the stamini bar running out or what
8) I called in my first vehicle, looked like a jeep, got in and within 30 seconds I was destroyed by an enemy. Are all vehicles this weak or is it just that jeep thing.
9) We lost the game unfortunately, partly because for a while whenever someone would join the game, they would be on the opposite team, so I'm not sure if it was because they were friends with someone on the enemy team or if it was due to bad team balancing issues
10) On the subject of the jeep (kind of), I wondered why they would have a jeep or a dropship for such a small map. The map I played on had 4 "hacking stations". So this brings up the question of how big will the maps be? If they are all going to be that size, then that might be a small area for jeeps, tanks and dropships.
11) After the battle, I was in my Merc Ship looking at everything, and I came across the starmap. What is the point of this and would I potentially be able to join any battles from this map?
12) I noticed in the battle listings screen there were Merc and Corporation battles, but there were none currently active. Is this because of the beta or are these just going to be special events?
13) The market place has A LOT of stuff to buy, but it is somewhat confusing on how to buy/implement these items. Do they give me a boost in someway? Maybe thats why those guys seemed to kill me so fast?
14) If certain items do give you a boost like that, it doesn't really seem fair when noobies are going to be dominated by vets with the "best" equipment
Can you guys give me any feedback on my thoughts? Perhaps, the devs can read and tune in on somethings.
Finally, thank you to all of the devs and the Dust 514 staff for letting me test your game. I honestly had a blast even when getting shot in the face, so keep up the good work mates! |

A lot of your questions can be answered with the phrase 'its a beta' i.e. we are testing stuff for the final game.
A few thoughts:
2: Turn around. Now crouch down and turn around. What do you notice?
8: Pretty much. You have to keep moving and pick 'em up in the right area or they will die quickly.
11: Just for looks at present. |

All good questions for a new person prehaps you should take a look the the "Training" Message board. I am going to tell you a few things though. #1 They dont actualy tell you in this build what map you are on. #2I reality do you turn faster when crouched or standing? I think that it is intended. #3 Known issue #4 right now the standred match in a non corp battle is 16v16 in corp battles I think they are running 8v8 #5 We are actualy down on the ammount of health players have and personaly I liked it better when proto gear had more health. #6 no need for comment #7 yes the Meele is attached to stamina #8 the vehicle you called in is called a LAV (Light Attack Vehicle) the lowest tier is called millitia and yes they get killed if you look at them wrong. higher Tier vehicles have better shield and armour #9 sometimes it happens when squads enter a battle #10 the map you are seeing right now is a fraction of what will be there in time. also have you tried running across the map on foot on the map that looks like a fort? It takes about 5 minutes in a logi suit if you manage to not get killed. #11 right now the star map is just icing and looks cool. That star cluster is the universe you are playing in and in time that map should become a very important thing to keep an eye on. #12 there are no Merc battles that I'm aware of yet and the corp battle become availble when you join a corperation and they accept a battle contract. #13The market can be confusing to new people. In the market is everything you need to make your character totaly unique. most everything there has a bonus to something or another, half of the game is figuring out wha works best together and what dosn't. #14 When the game goes live and hopefully now there is a matchmaking system that wont pair you with higher players. Though there will still be people that will try and grief the newbs. If you have any more qeustions feel free and ask. |

1.) There are currently 5 Maps available this build (Ashland, Communication, Skim Junction, Line Harvest, and Manus Peak.) They all vary in size and amount of Null Cannon Instalations (the things you hack.) High resolution pics for 4 of the above maps can be found in the "Map Feedback" section of the forums.
2.) I'm actually not sure about this.
3.) Known issue.
4.) Currently it's 16 Vs 16 but CCP has made it clear that they intend to have larger scale matches available in the future.
5.) That's the point. Combat is slightly more tactical than run and gun. Since it's your first match i gather you were using Militia gear, which is the weakest of all available gear. The people you were shooting at (most likely) were using Shield/Armor extenders availble in the Market Place. If you upgrade to non-Militia weapons you may find you kill more often but i'd need to know your fit to determine that.
6.) Skipping since it's not really a question.
7.) It could be that or maybe you were falling/running but i don't use melee often so i'm not really sure about the bugs concerning it. It could be worth testing and reporting to CCP since the current melee is new.
8.) The first Jeep, Baloch, is a FREE militia jeep. As such it is indeed pretty weak. They are only meant to be used for quick (hopefully uninterrupted) travel across larger maps.
9.) I'm not exactly sure what your saying here but the "Killfeed" also shows the name of the people that join the opposite side and the side your on. So when a person joins the enemy it appears on your killfeed, and when you join your team it appears on your enemies killfeed.
10.) The maps vary in size. Since the map had "4 hacking stations" I'm assuming you played on Line Harvest. Which is a medium Size map. Once you visit Manus Peak and some of the other large maps you'll be happy you have Vehicles. Also vehicles with Rockets can be great groud support even on small maps. Provided your enemy doesn't have Anti-Vehicle equipment.
11.) The starmap is a representation of the EVE universe. Suppposedly, once the full game is out, the goal of a DUST merc will be to take and hold different Planets/Star Systems that you see there. Also Supposedly, each planet is supposed to have a different Map.
12.) I just joined a Corp myself so i'm not too sure about how they work. I'm pretty sure though they don't work unless your in a Player Corp and not in one of the starting NPC corps. If you join a Corp run by a player, i'm sure you can ask your future CEO more questions.
13.) Correct! There are many fun toys to use on the Marketplace. Everything from Pants to Guns to Drugs and Surgery.
14.) That's currently one of the Balancing issues in the game. There is going to be a matchmaking system (supposedly) that will seperate new players from veterens so they don't get steamrolled somewhere down the line. As for now, my advice is to think about what you need for your suit. Survivabiltiy? Mobility? Stealth? Gun Damage? Anti-Vehicle Weaponry? Armor Regen? Ammo Regen? and look though the Modules and Equipment on the market to find out what you want to make your Merc play the way you want. And always.. |

Hey, I'm glad you're having fun with the game :) I'm going to reply to these as best as I can, and if other people see any issues with what I wrote, they can correct me :)
1) Not sure what map I'm on, the instant battle/loading screen menu didn't really tell me or I didn't really know where to look
Maps will be (once the game is finished) based on the layout of the EVE world. This ties in with your question about the starmap (11) - every single area in the game from that star map is an area in the world of EVE Online. Since this game ties directly into it, you will eventually have things like corporations based on one of those systems hiring you out as a mercenary to assault or defend areas all over that map.
2) You turn slower when you are crouched than when you are standing, I wonder if that is for a reason or if is just not supposed to work like that
This I actually donGÇÖt know that much about. I think it was a realism issue, but to be honest, IGÇÖve never really noticed it. It only ever helped me aim steadier, so I always instinctively saw it as a boon when sniping. You can of course adjust some of these (though the sensitivity seems to be broken for some people), and you can also play with a keyboard and mouse if you choose (this is still in need of some work, but yes, you can just plug your mouse/keyboard and go).
3) Some clippin issues when walking around corners of buildings
The devs are aware of this issue so far as I know, and theyGÇÖre working on it. TheyGÇÖre also working to fix the really annoying fall damage when you hit the wrong geometry and all of a sudden, the game thinks you fell a few hundred feet.
4) How many players is supposed to be in a full game?
I believe the number that theyGÇÖre looking for is 48 for now, maybe bigger once the game matures. Depending on the PS3 hardware, it should support way more. And also, depending on whether or not they will continue development of this game over to the PS4 whenever that comes out.
5) I think it takes way too many bullets to kill someone. I get having a shield and everything, but I think the amount of bullets it takes to down someone should be within the one standard clip range
This is a complex answer because if you have no background in EVE online, then this will seem the least intuitive to you. Every character has skill points, and subsequent skills they can apply those skill points to. Think of it as a nonlinear level up, where your level isnGÇÖt one overencompassing number arbitrarily saying how good you are, but a lot of little numbers in specializations you want to train, categorized as skill trees. You should have seen them by now GÇô Electronics, Mechanics, etc.
Of these skill trees, here are a few points:
Gun Skills: Each skill point put into the generic gun skill increases the damage by 2%, up to a total of 10% (this number is subject to change). Each specialized gun-related skill further tweaks this. For example, putting points into the handgun/sidearm side of things will increase your bullet capacity for handguns, the maximum range they can hit people from, how quickly you reload, and so on.
Shield Skills: Each point put into this tree will increase your shield capacity by a certain amount. You can also put points into the subsequent specialty skills to increase the charge amount, charge rate, and so on when your shield gets depleted. Mechanics Skills: Each point put into this will increase your armor capacity by a certain amount. Like the shield, you can specialize and get armor repairer equipment that will passively fix you up, and so on.
Suit Skills: Your suit itself has certain base statistics that heavily impact your game. Right now, not all of the suits, guns, or equipment are available GÇô you have a mishmash of a few items for each of the 4 main races in the EVE online world (look up the EVE Races to understand their racial specializations, as they apply directly into this game in terms of concept). A high-end Minmatarr suit (the current heavy suit) is geared towards high armor, meh shields, and so on. They can take a lot of punishment, and coupled with the modifications their skill choices apply to their fittings, this can mean theyGÇÖre walking tanks. If you go to your characterGÇÖs skills, you can go right and see a larger tree of what skills are available to you now. As you train higher into skills, more will appear. Alternatively, the marketplace now lists the skills required for each piece of equipment above it, and you can buy that skill and upgrade it with skill points directly from there.
The market economy is something you should also read up about, especially where theyGÇÖre intending to take it (see the EVE online economy), as well as boosters, and all the other items youGÇÖll be dealing with. It is overwhelming at first, but itGÇÖs what makes the game so in-depth.
Also, keep in mind that the items youGÇÖre currently using now are GÇ£Civilian GradeGÇ¥ items, probably. These are the lowest stats, the worst power and CPU usage, and the weakest. The upside? TheyGÇÖre cheap. As you upgrade your skills and get access to better items, youGÇÖll start seeing the damage pile up
Ask me if you want this expanded further, IGÇÖm just glossing over this for now, and havenGÇÖt even delved into fitting configurations, efficiencies and so on.
6) The "stamina" bar thing is kind of annoying, but I get the purpose of it
Yeah. Hopefully once the levels are fixed geometrically so you donGÇÖt have to jump out of corners and so on, this wonGÇÖt be as big of an issue.
7) When trying to melee, sometimes I would press the button and it would not work, I don't recall if this was a part of the stamini bar running out or what
Yes, they are tied to stamina, and if you sprint towards someone and try to bop them on the head, it wonGÇÖt always work. Either that or youGÇÖre bugging the game out. You never know, really. |

8) I called in my first vehicle, looked like a jeep, got in and within 30 seconds I was destroyed by an enemy. Are all vehicles this weak or is it just that jeep thing.
Vehicles are just another offshoot of point 5 that I wrote about. You start with civilian grade items, and upgrade them to higher end ones. Currently, the jeep canGÇÖt take much punishment, but with the right fittings, a good driver, and a good gunner, they can do a lot of damage. Your mileage may vary with vehicles (I suck at driving them, so I just ignore them for now). Keep in mind that calling in vehicles also costs you money! DonGÇÖt overdo it!
9) We lost the game unfortunately, partly because for a while whenever someone would join the game, they would be on the opposite team, so I'm not sure if it was because they were friends with someone on the enemy team or if it was due to bad team balancing issues
There are still some occasional hiccups with balancing that IGÇÖve noticed, but yes, if players join as a group, this tends to happen. The worst of it is that players joining in groups often work as groups, and _really_ tip the balance. We went from a sure victory, to a very epic defeat because of this many times.
You heard the term, never bring a knife to a gunfight? EVE online is sort of the extreme of that. Someone brings a gun, then someone pulls out an assault rifle, then someone pulls out a rocket launcher, then someone nukes the whole planet from orbit and laughs his merry way onwards.
The EVE world is all about freedom to do what you want to do, so if a bunch of players want to spawn down a bunch of tanks or airships and nuke the map, thatGÇÖs their choice. All of these maps will eventually, as IGÇÖve mentioned before, be tied to corporations (clans/guilds in EVE online), that send out contracts to people playing Dust, so if you want to drop down a 1M ISK tank, and the contract is only worth 800K ISK, then you lose the tank and you lose 200K out of your pocket... That you have to share with your friendsGǪ so yes, in the final game this will be a bit more balanced because of funding. Or stacked GÇô if a corp wants to steamroll the competition.
So yes, map size doesnGÇÖt really matter. I also donGÇÖt know what the map sizes will be in the end, and I donGÇÖt know if thatGÇÖs been finalized yet.
11) After the battle, I was in my Merc Ship looking at everything, and I came across the starmap. What is the point of this and would I potentially be able to join any battles from this map?
See my point in section 1. EVE is a huge world!
12) I noticed in the battle listings screen there were Merc and Corporation battles, but there were none currently active. Is this because of the beta or are these just going to be special events?
Yes, this is because of beta. There are some special events now and then to test those features out, but I think that the current setup is so that the Merc battles are free for all type of things, and Corp ones are sponsored by the player corporations in EVE online.
13) The market place has A LOT of stuff to buy, but it is somewhat confusing on how to buy/implement these items. Do they give me a boost in someway? Maybe thats why those guys seemed to kill me so fast?
Yes, itGÇÖs a big and confusing thing if you havenGÇÖt played EVE before GÇô itGÇÖs not the most intuitive thing in the world and the UI is still a bit away from having the usefulness of the EVE online one. Notably, you canGÇÖt compare items yet (at least I canGÇÖt), and therefore you probably have never realized what the different tiers mean because you couldnGÇÖt see the numbers. In short, yes, the higher the tier item (the higher the meta), the better its stats are. A civilian pistol will not have all the good high-tech-top-secret military advancements, so you get the idea.
This is most likely why youGÇÖve been dying so much (assuming you can aim on average the same as other people, and are good at it GÇô I suck still)
14) If certain items do give you a boost like that, it doesn't really seem fair when noobies are going to be dominated by vets with the "best" equipment
The idea of EVE is so that no matter how weak you may seem, you can always fit into a role that is beneficial to the group. If youGÇÖre clever enoughGǪ I suppose one of the biggest things that draws me to EVE is that it isnGÇÖt fair. ItGÇÖs as unfair and as stacked against you as you let it be, and IGÇÖm glad Dust is no different.
Unlike other FPS games, balance isnGÇÖt something that the design is meant towards. But then again, there is no overall GÇ£bestGÇ¥ class either GÇô each person has a role that adds to the whole. You canGÇÖt be a huge team of slow moving heavy troopers, only to lose all of your base capture points because you move like snails. And are really nice targets for aircraft. And orbital strikes.
The idea is that when the game launches, noob players will have smaller contracts and so on to get their feet wet. And skill points always accumulate passively, which means you could not log in for a year and come back and have a ton of skill points to distribute (like EVE, though thatGÇÖs pay to play so not playing for a year is a bitGǪ financially unwise?).
The starting skill points are actually a decent starting point for items GÇô you can go toe to toe with a lot of people, and provided that youGÇÖre decently skilled, best people that are better equipped than you with tactics and teamwork. A lone soldier, no matter how GÇ£eliteGÇ¥ he is, will go down when surrounded by bullets.
So yes, the game is a bit harsh and brutal, but thatGÇÖs what EVE is.
Welcome to immortality, soldier.

random general info as well as some answers. I didn't just answer your questions because everyone else probably already answered, and I think this would be good info for someone new:
This might help you find what map you are on https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=42734&find=unread https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=42725&find=unread https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=42729&find=unread https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=42731&find=unread
CCP mentioned before a Conquest mode which would be bigger than Skirmish, I don't know how it will work.
Next update to the beta will just be bug fixes and other fixes like balance, so the game should be much smoother then.
CCP confirmed that there will be a matchmaking system in highsec (low risk battles where you're hired by NPCs) that matches you with players with similar total skill points so you won't get steamrolled by vets with expensive prototype gear.
I think Merc battles is just going to be server lists where you choose what battles to go into instead of using the instant battle. There use to be a server lists of battles to join, but they took it away so we can test the instant battle system.
Explore the market, customize fittings, play around with stuff, level up skills, get new skills, try new weapons and equipment. Its important that you get comfortable with things, and experiment to get a good understanding of how things work. Take your time to read item descriptions, as well as comparing stats in the market; militia gear is a great place to start since it requires no skill points to use. Remember, for skills you have to buy the skillbook with ISK, use the skillbook, then level up the skillbook to the desired level using skill points, skills augment your characters, and let you use different kinds items, or better items. Skills sometimes have other skills as prerequisites; if you have those prerequisites already (or there are no prerequisites) then you will see a gree checkmark, if you don't have the prerequisites you will see a red x. If you see some skills (like "assault rifle proficiency level 2") above some items you want, it means you don't have the skill(s) or required skill level to use the item, so make sure you buy/use/level a skill first.
Militia gear requires no skills to use, while standard, advanced, and prototype gear requires certain skill and skill levels to use (as well as cost more money). Preset or default fittings don't cost any money and never run out, but anything else you add in to the fitting (or add into a new fitting you create) disappears after you die, so make sure to buy items in bulk. If 1 or more items from a fitting runs out, then that fitting becomes invalid, and you have to restock the fitting (or just the specific elements in the fitting that are invalid). Go buy and try militia stuff now, its crappy but very cheap.
Dropsuits: (more are coming) Assault- medium suit, frontline general fighting. Scout- low health, very fast. Logistics- carry multiple equipment, not as fast as scout, and not as much health as assault. Heavy- slow, but lots of health, can use special heavy weapons like the heavy machinegun and forge gun, but has no equipment slots.
Equipment: Nanohives- replenish ammo. Nanite injectors- revives dead teammates. Drop uplink- deployable spawn point for your squad. Repair tool- heals armor of dropsuits, vehicles, and installations. Active scanner- lets you scan for enemies, not really clear how it works. Its new and still needs work. Remote explosives- plant bombs that go boom. Some you have to detonate yourself, and there is some that detonate when enemy vehicles go over them.
Dropsuit modules: Armor mods- armor by default doesn't regenerate, but there are armor repair modules to make armor regenerate, and armor addons to increase total armor. Shield mods- there are mods for extra shields, mods to increase the rate of shield regeneration, and mods to make shields tougher. Damage mods- there are damage mods to increase damage of weapons; some for light weapons, some for sidearms like the pistol and SMG, and some for heavy weapons. Sensor mods- mods to make you spot enemies better, spot enemies from from longer ranges, and mods for avoiding being spotted. When an enemy looks at you, you are automatically spotted, and your location is broadcasted to the entire enemy team (until the enemy stops looking at you), so these mods are really handy. CPU and PG mods- increases your total CPU or PG to let you fit more stuff on your dropsuit. Biotic mods- mods for increasing speed, stamina recovery, increasing overall stamina, and improving melee damage.
Light weapons: (scrambler rifle is coming soon) Assault rifle- basic light weapon you get. All around useful weapon. Laser rifle- mid to long range precise weapon. Big magazine, does more damage the longer you fire, and the greater the distance. Damage is terrible at close range. Mass driver- semi auto grenade launcher. Sniper rifle- its a sniper rifle shotgun- its a shotgun Swarm launcher- fires a swarm of missiles at locked on vehicles.
Sidearms: (flaylock pistol is coming) Scrambler pistol- its a pistol SMG- its an SMG
Heavy weapons: Only heavies can use (heavies can only use light weapons instead) Forge gun- powerful railgun you have to charge. its an anti vehicle weapon great for destroying HAVs (tanks). Heavy machice gun- 200 round magazine high fire rate gatling gun.
If you are squad leader you can set attack, defend, rally, and capture orders for your squad. Can be done from using the map, (up on the d pad I think), or pressing R2 + R3 to open up the command wheel (much more convenient). Following orders give squad members bonus points. If your squad gets enough war points, the squad leader can call in a strike from the menu you use to call vehicles. Just go to off-map support.

13) Try sticking to militia equipment first. There you get a taste of what modules there are. Once you get an idea and more skills, gradually expand your view to the whole market.
14) I can only guess, but I think this issue will be solved in the future by different kinds of contracts, i.e. contracts with different payouts. Contracts with low payout will attract newer players, while higher payouts will attract vets whose dropsuits cost a fortune. |

You can't spawn on squadmates even if you're squad leader, but squadmates can put a drop uplink on the ground to be used as a spawn point. Try buying some militia drop uplinks and test it out. The militia section of the market is your best friend right now. |
