random general info as well as some answers. I didn't just answer your questions because everyone else probably already answered, and I think this would be good info for someone new:
This might help you find what map you are on https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=42734&find=unread https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=42725&find=unread https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=42729&find=unread https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=42731&find=unread
CCP mentioned before a Conquest mode which would be bigger than Skirmish, I don't know how it will work.
Next update to the beta will just be bug fixes and other fixes like balance, so the game should be much smoother then.
CCP confirmed that there will be a matchmaking system in highsec (low risk battles where you're hired by NPCs) that matches you with players with similar total skill points so you won't get steamrolled by vets with expensive prototype gear.
I think Merc battles is just going to be server lists where you choose what battles to go into instead of using the instant battle. There use to be a server lists of battles to join, but they took it away so we can test the instant battle system.
Explore the market, customize fittings, play around with stuff, level up skills, get new skills, try new weapons and equipment. Its important that you get comfortable with things, and experiment to get a good understanding of how things work. Take your time to read item descriptions, as well as comparing stats in the market; militia gear is a great place to start since it requires no skill points to use. Remember, for skills you have to buy the skillbook with ISK, use the skillbook, then level up the skillbook to the desired level using skill points, skills augment your characters, and let you use different kinds items, or better items. Skills sometimes have other skills as prerequisites; if you have those prerequisites already (or there are no prerequisites) then you will see a gree checkmark, if you don't have the prerequisites you will see a red x. If you see some skills (like "assault rifle proficiency level 2") above some items you want, it means you don't have the skill(s) or required skill level to use the item, so make sure you buy/use/level a skill first.
Militia gear requires no skills to use, while standard, advanced, and prototype gear requires certain skill and skill levels to use (as well as cost more money). Preset or default fittings don't cost any money and never run out, but anything else you add in to the fitting (or add into a new fitting you create) disappears after you die, so make sure to buy items in bulk. If 1 or more items from a fitting runs out, then that fitting becomes invalid, and you have to restock the fitting (or just the specific elements in the fitting that are invalid). Go buy and try militia stuff now, its crappy but very cheap.
Dropsuits: (more are coming) Assault- medium suit, frontline general fighting. Scout- low health, very fast. Logistics- carry multiple equipment, not as fast as scout, and not as much health as assault. Heavy- slow, but lots of health, can use special heavy weapons like the heavy machinegun and forge gun, but has no equipment slots.
Equipment: Nanohives- replenish ammo. Nanite injectors- revives dead teammates. Drop uplink- deployable spawn point for your squad. Repair tool- heals armor of dropsuits, vehicles, and installations. Active scanner- lets you scan for enemies, not really clear how it works. Its new and still needs work. Remote explosives- plant bombs that go boom. Some you have to detonate yourself, and there is some that detonate when enemy vehicles go over them.
Dropsuit modules: Armor mods- armor by default doesn't regenerate, but there are armor repair modules to make armor regenerate, and armor addons to increase total armor. Shield mods- there are mods for extra shields, mods to increase the rate of shield regeneration, and mods to make shields tougher. Damage mods- there are damage mods to increase damage of weapons; some for light weapons, some for sidearms like the pistol and SMG, and some for heavy weapons. Sensor mods- mods to make you spot enemies better, spot enemies from from longer ranges, and mods for avoiding being spotted. When an enemy looks at you, you are automatically spotted, and your location is broadcasted to the entire enemy team (until the enemy stops looking at you), so these mods are really handy. CPU and PG mods- increases your total CPU or PG to let you fit more stuff on your dropsuit. Biotic mods- mods for increasing speed, stamina recovery, increasing overall stamina, and improving melee damage.
Light weapons: (scrambler rifle is coming soon) Assault rifle- basic light weapon you get. All around useful weapon. Laser rifle- mid to long range precise weapon. Big magazine, does more damage the longer you fire, and the greater the distance. Damage is terrible at close range. Mass driver- semi auto grenade launcher. Sniper rifle- its a sniper rifle shotgun- its a shotgun Swarm launcher- fires a swarm of missiles at locked on vehicles.
Sidearms: (flaylock pistol is coming) Scrambler pistol- its a pistol SMG- its an SMG
Heavy weapons: Only heavies can use (heavies can only use light weapons instead) Forge gun- powerful railgun you have to charge. its an anti vehicle weapon great for destroying HAVs (tanks). Heavy machice gun- 200 round magazine high fire rate gatling gun.
If you are squad leader you can set attack, defend, rally, and capture orders for your squad. Can be done from using the map, (up on the d pad I think), or pressing R2 + R3 to open up the command wheel (much more convenient). Following orders give squad members bonus points. If your squad gets enough war points, the squad leader can call in a strike from the menu you use to call vehicles. Just go to off-map support.
