ST-1 Fragmentation is the One True LAV Turret. The One Turret to Rule Them All.
The Small Railgun turrets are damn near useless. Sure, you COULD hit a sniper with them now and then, and you CAN use them against installations, but you can do that with Rockets too. The main problem with these is the fact that they shoot immediately when charged. They'd be marginally useful if you could hold the charge for awhile to line things up.
The Small Blaster turrets are only worth it for 'suicide runs' in cramped spaces. That, and dueling other LAV's while rolling with a driver and gunner. Both are extremely limited, however, and are almost never worth giving up the Frag. If you were unfortunate enough to pick Gallente for your starting race (or whichever other one gets the Baloch Impact), you can make a cheap suicide Baloch with militia armor plates. Drive it into a cramped area such as one of the Deathmatch maps, hop in the turret, and mow people down until you start getting hit or someone chucks an AV grenade. Free machinegun nest.
The standard Militia Rocket that comes with the Onikuma is fine. But the name versions are better, obviously. If you're going to use a 'standard' (non fast-flying, non frag, non fast-reload) turret, you might as well go Militia.
The fast-firing ones are decent enough for auto-duels or sniping people. Generally, though, this makes it on the same order of usefulness as the blaster, and can be done in similar situations... except you don't want to suicide them because they cost money. Also, I'd rather have someone skilled in a frag or fast-flying launcher than this.
The fast-flying ones have much greater range and are great for sniping turrets across the map. They can also tag people with a quickness since you have less need to lead the target. They are also good for that quick snap-shot to tag someone who's not moving... like a sniper or that jackass with the Swarms who's about to punch holes in your colon.
But, after all that, the Fragmentation is still the best. Equivalent direct damage but reduced splash. Don't let the "5.0 meter splash" vs "6.8 meter splash" fool you... it may SAY that, but for all practical purposes, it's got about twice the radius of the 'standard' one. It does less damage on the splash, but at least you are inflicting damage with the splash. Reduced damage versus NO damage is no contest. You just have to aim in the general direction of the foe's feet and WHAM, they take at least some damage. And when people try to hide around corners, behind walls, or in those little crinkly bits in the city portions of maps? Yeah. Boom. This also makes it easier to duel other vehicles.
