I can see both sides of this mechanic. it's good that it gives people a chance to keep up with the joneses, in a way. but it is also no bueno in the fact that it renders skill boosters all but useless for roughly 3 to 4 days per week (depending on how often you play) and that it makes those last few days of week, that usually would be the busiest, rather quiet due to people who can't earn SP
Again, I play(ed) EVE, I know how this works, but just like in EVE, there wasn't really anything to keep my interest once I started hitting the month+ long skill trains. Sure, a lot of people don't seem to be bothered by the long trains (Don't give me the "a month!? PSH! My skills take 4 years PER!" BS). I know the drill.
Anyway, The SP issue is something that needs to be looked into. Particularly giving people incentive to play beyond earning SP and advancing their characters. maybe some form of mining, or market manipulation. maybe a stock market, or some jazz, something that will give people a reason to log in daily, even after their skill points are tapped. Like in EVE, if you are stuck training a 10+ day skill, for those 10 days, you can run missions for ISK, you can play the market game, you can PVP (which is what DUST is all about, granted) and all sorts of other things.
I dunno. I suppose when the game is released, and we can access the market, and squads are bigger, it will be ok, but I would assume the majority of lone-wolves out there are going to be filtered out by the first month or so. This game is going to suck if you don't have a corp/clan.
Heh, more like EVE than I thought it was going to be. |

I think once we're closer to release we'll start seeing some of the features that will keep people playing when they're not just trying to unlock skills and equipment. Right now it's all about one thing, because it's the core of the entire game, but I expect this game to get bigger than just random arena matches. If I'm only playing for SP I'm going to get bored pretty quickly, because what's the point? Getting more SP so I can go and get more SP? |

Strange, I'm about to hit the 1mil mark and I'm still getting 20-30k SP per match (I'm regularly getting around 2000WP)
I do have a Booster, but I haven't been below 5k SP once. |

The only reason you should be getting that low is if you've hit the weekly skill cap they implemented. If you've been playing a lot, then you are likely at the lowest end of the decreasing returns cap for the week. Will reset next week. |

So it would seem something has changed since yesterday, unless it's the divider slowly multiplying back to the pre-state of SP gain.
I think we should wait until the weekend and see how gains are on those two days. If they're looking better than they are today but worse the day after, whatnot, we'll know more to be able to identify what's going on on client end. Unless CCP have already explained what's going on? I didn't see anything but then again I didn't look. |

I'm torn here.
A SP cap would limit me in my choices in case I make a mistake. Would also mean I can't experiment.
A SP cap is good for keeping players from being too strong.
I always assumed Dust to become a part of the cruel EVE Online Universe where you can branch out and do what you feel to make whatever type of character but now it seems like you must simply go a certain path out of fear so that you don't fall behind in the race.
I don't see an obvious fix here at least not with the current systems.
I would make it so that the difference between casual players and hardcore players, when it comes to gaining SP, would be High-Sec and Low-Sec. High-Sec battles would have mercenaries gaining little SP and little ISK risk while Low-Sec battles would give players more SP with a bigger ISK risk. Of course Null-Sec areas wouldn't give you SP. If they did, that would muddy up things for one because player distribution would be all over the place and another thing would be that you must be a part of a corporation to actually fight in those areas right? I don't completely understand the corporation and Null-Sec relationship but I digress.
This would eliminate the need for an SP cap because of the fact the hardcore/SP collecting players wouldn't be with the casual/weekend players usually.

Let just play with the numbers, rise the price of the habillities, and raise the sp rewards, that way it keeps the same, but we feel like we are getting more, and our clones are supposed to be more expensive than the one on the capsuleers ( our chips are faster and get everything from a clone to the other) so you don-Št have to keep your other clone actualiced. |

I agree on playing with the numbers, but perhaps it would be better to simply lower the SP gain to begin with. They already have passive SP gain for more casual players and if you have a changing system where you gain a lot the first couple days and it peters off later on then you feel ripped off for playing during those low times. If everyone gets a lower active SP gain and make the SP gain a more flat distribution or a day to day cap then you won't feel as ripped off.
What you could do as well is an SP cap bank in which if you don't play for a couple days then your potential SP is banked and you can earn it as active rewards to help catch up(based on day to day cap). But for more active players, while they still will be farther ahead, they will still feel like they are progressing. It's more a system to allow more casual players to keep up with the race.
And while I understand how an SP cap prevents the more active players from just leaping ahead of everyone, the SP gain does not need to match EVE. It's not as if I can take my DUST character and suddenly jump into a capsule. It's more we only need to balance the system within DUST. While our actions effect what happens in EVE, the SP numbers don't really effect one an other. |
