Tony Calif Seraphim Initiative. CRONOS. 2002	Posted - 2012.10.01 18:39:00 - [1] - Quote While servers are down... 50p bought me a copy of Dune by Frank Herbert. I've never actually read it. I loved the film, I was pretty young back then, and playing Dust really can remind me of the battle in said film. Might be those forge guns making huge blasts of sand/dirt :D Plateaus really reminds me of it. Obviously spice worms are a SOONtm sorta thing... I guess. Anyway, I figure this is more fun than moaning about the servers.

Enders Game, one of the best books I have read in 20 years. The series is amazing!! (movie coming soon) 2. Stranger in a Strange Land - Older book, but simply amazing 3. The name of the Wind. ( I know there are Kvothe the Bloodless fans on here) 4. Hyperion - 4 book series with some of the best writing. 5. The Awakened 6. Interworld - Neil Gaiman book, short, funny and very good. I read a LOT!!

They're nitty gritty detailed and if you can get into them real fun. But for more EVE/Dust stuff, you might wanna check up the Honor Harrington series. Easy to read, detailed enough to convince you in the tech department and well... just fun.

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline This is an awesome book....the best book I have ever read that has its roots in video games and gaming lore. Its not a long or hard read but its definitely good.

As far as sci-fi, if you haven't read the Godfather of sci-fi, 2001 a space odyssey series by Arthur C. Clark, you just don't know. I concur with Enders Game as a real good read Dune is on my list to read and now Templar one is too

Quite similar to the above, particularly his revelation space series. And Zima Blue, a collection of short stories by him, is quite possibly my favourite book. Ever. Edit: Lots of love for the Hyperion series as well, but has anyone tried the Ilium/Olympos series? I actually preferred this. It's a bit different, strange mix of science fiction, the Iliad and Shakespeare, but it seems to work, for me at least.

John Scalzi did something very similar recently ("Old Man's War"), and it's much more fun to read. Apart from mercs, I agree with everybody else that Iain M. Banks and his Culture Novels are one of the best (but beware, only the first two or three will be fun for you, after that, the novelty wears off and you get annoyed by his unsatisfying endings). EDIT: For truly big spaceships, I humbly suggest Robert Reed. Vernor Vinge also wrote great books you'll like if you dig Banks and Hamilton. I've read a lot of David Brin and loved it, but I hate him since he outlined an absurdly wrong theory of language in one of his Uplift books ;-). And of course never forget the odd Pole and those Russians (Stanislaw Lem and the Strugatzki brothers)GÇª

In keeping with the power armor theme, I'd say Heinlein's 'Starship Troopers', Haldeman's 'The Forever War' - prolly the best technical presentation of power armor, Steakey's 'Armor' - really DUSTlike in it's atmosphere, and the main character is the badass scout ;) Scalzi's 'Old Man's War' - full of great ideas and lots of fun Hamilton's 'Neutronium Alchemist' - very smart space opera, with one of the best Infantry fight scenes in all of scifi.

Considering that a single temporal flux value in temporal mechanics is too limiting. I.e. the Grandfather Paradox and the Deja Vu paradox only exist as such within such a model. However in a temporal flux model with more than one result there are alternative values to resolve both paradoxes. But then I have other things to do such as sleep so maybe back to give a more detailed explanation later in the day.

Upon completing the first book I immediately set out to obtain the other books and thus got hooked to this series. I'm not sure how it or whether it (can) relate(s) to DUST or EVE though there is the concept of the privateer, which would mean as much as independent a space faring merchant/merc. I had an Eye operation a few years ago and listened to the unabridged audiobook of Enders Game - terrific. I read all the follow up books after and agree with you, all good but different.

Also read The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch and Valis. Though they're nothing like Dust, but the worlds he creates are awesome.

I'm actually very surprised no one has mentioned him. Most of the book Charles Stross writes are like having Ian Flemmings, H.P. lovecraft, and some guy that writes those tech how-to books sit in a room take some acid and write a book. I highly recommend Glass House and Accelarondo.
