While servers are down...
50p bought me a copy of Dune by Frank Herbert. I've never actually read it. I loved the film, I was pretty young back then, and playing Dust really can remind me of the battle in said film. Might be those forge guns making huge blasts of sand/dirt :D Plateaus really reminds me of it. Obviously spice worms are a SOONtm sorta thing... I guess.
Anyway, I figure this is more fun than moaning about the servers. |

I second the suggestion of Ian M. Banks, especially Consider Phlebas and Excession.
I need to check out Peter Hamilton, and I definatly recommend Templar One.
Reading Empyrean Age right now,
next will be The Burning Life, and a re-read of the Ballad of Halo Jones.

If you're looking for great Scifi books I suggest the following:
1. Enders Game, one of the best books I have read in 20 years. The series is amazing!! (movie coming soon) 2. Stranger in a Strange Land - Older book, but simply amazing 3. The name of the Wind. ( I know there are Kvothe the Bloodless fans on here) 4. Hyperion - 4 book series with some of the best writing. 5. The Awakened 6. Interworld - Neil Gaiman book, short, funny and very good.
I read a LOT!! |

Neal Asher's Polity universe (especially the Ian Cormack series). It's a bit like Bank's Culture (sentient starships and AI governance), but darker. |

Enders Game is fun, as has been mentioned here. The Hamilton books are... well, don't read the stoned. They're nitty gritty detailed and if you can get into them real fun. But for more EVE/Dust stuff, you might wanna check up the Honor Harrington series. Easy to read, detailed enough to convince you in the tech department and well... just fun. |

I'm more fantasy:
All of JRR Tolkien writings- read em 5 times
Stephen Kings- Dark Tower series ( just awesome and different from other books of his) read em 4 times
Iliad and Odyssey by Homer
Game of Thrones
And a lot of Arthur legends...
As far as sci-fi, if you haven't read the Godfather of sci-fi, 2001 a space odyssey series by Arthur C. Clark, you just don't know.
I concur with Enders Game as a real good read
Dune is on my list to read
and now Templar one is too |

Currently Reading Leviathan Wakes by James S. A. Corey. which is not bad.
My top sci-fi recommendation is Hyperion and the follow ups from Dan Simmons.
Also recommend strongly the Nights Dawn trilogy from Peter F Hamilton.
If you want a good starship trooper trashy read then look John Ringo (I don't mean trashy in a bad way - just an easier read than say Imagica from Clive Barker which I recently finished). |

ENDERS GAME IS A MUST READ!!! I can't emphasis that enough. It is the first of a series of 4 books. The last 3 are completely different feeling books, but still good.
Once again...

Big fan here of Iain M. Banks, Peter F. Hamilton and Neal Asher, from the names mentioned above. Also, no Alastair Reynolds yet? Quite similar to the above, particularly his revelation space series. And Zima Blue, a collection of short stories by him, is quite possibly my favourite book. Ever.
Edit: Lots of love for the Hyperion series as well, but has anyone tried the Ilium/Olympos series? I actually preferred this. It's a bit different, strange mix of science fiction, the Iliad and Shakespeare, but it seems to work, for me at least. |
