I'm a bit reluctant to do this, but I can really use some advice/help.
I've been playing FPS games for well, since they came out. Now I know this is not supposed to be a normal FPS, I get that. My problem is that after over a month of pretty solid play, I still can not hit people I shoot at! This is mostly with the assault riffle. It does happen with the heavy machine gun too, but i'm fine with the sniper riffle. Which I normally am when I start playing a FPS, that's why I usually snipe for the first few days while I get the hang of the assault riffles. Only I'm not getting it this time. Whatever the trick is, I am just not fundamentally getting it. Anytime I get in a 1 on one firefight I will always loose. This is getting to be very frustrating to put it mildly.
I know that there are hit detection problems. I know that at times I have lag, but this is beyond that. I have the assault riffle skill up to 4, and the (distance) skill up to 3. All my controller setting are default. I know I need to lead a target a bit, but I can't even hit guys running at me. I usually fire down the sights in games, but that is not working here, I seem to have better luck just shooting from the hip which still is not very good. Other people seem to have gotten how to do it, since they hit me just fine. I mostly use the basic assault riffle or the Breach riffle.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I feel like I'm missing something. I like the game, but am getting frustrated with this. |

I've found that slowing down and aiming a bit more deliberately than you generally would in a more "run n gun" situation helps A LOT. Treat aiming at mid range with an AR the same way you treat aiming with a sniper rifle. |

Also don't just unload your clip into the enemy, especially at any distance that isn't considered close range. I usually fire a quick burst (using the Standard Assault Rilfle w/ AR Operations at lvl 4) see where the bullet tracers went, adjust my aim, and repeat until one of us dies (usually them, unless they are a Scout Shotgun). |

For me, i've got no trouble if someone is running directly at or away from me, so i'm not sure how to tell you how to improve that other than you just need to be accurate with your aiming.
I also have no problem with a nearby target that is doing everything he can to avoid my shots.
Where i do tend to have trouble in this game in particular is shooting a moving target at medium+ range with my AR. This has never been an issue for me in any other game but the twitchy controls in Dust give me a bit of trouble. The sight aiming is so sensitive my fine adjustments always seem to be too much. Obviously if this is your issue, you can set your sensitivity lower in the settings.(In Dust, a lower sensitivity is actually a setting nearer to 100 than to 0, go figure). This helps your aim be less jumpy when looking down the sights, at the loss of fast rotation speed when hipfiring a nearby enemy. The lag and framerate in the beta amplifies the issue and i presume it will be much better in later builds, but it does baffle me that all players don't seem to have this issue as i get killed from a distance by an AR regularly.
I don't really see it as a problem, i see it as a more realistic game and skills that need practice. If you've ever tried to fire an actual gun at a moving target at a distance, it's not all that easy. It takes practice.
Something in Dust i have used to cope with it, whether it's my lack of skill or actual controls/hit detection/frame rate issues is while aiming, instead of constantly trying to aim dead on a moving target that keeps shifting side to side in which case you never seem to be able to get perfectly lined up, try to drag your bursts back and forth across your target. I always aim for the head and drag my shots across their upper torso or head which is usually very effective. The downside to this is, of course, wasting ammunition, since only half of your shots are actually hitting your target.
I don't claim it to be the best solution, it's really not, but for those of us that can't seem to get on target for some reason or another, it works.
In other realistic FPS games i don't have this problem and i enjoy long shotting foes with an AR with great accuracy, so while most of the replies you receive on here will be "Get Good", i'm telling you from someone who considers themselves a fairly skilled and experienced FPS player, it's not just you. There's something else at play here.
Let the extremely constructive "Get Good" replies commence.... |

It's not you. The gunplay isn't really there yet. It's loose, inconsistent and aiming sensitivity is very odd.
I'm hoping to see an improvement in the next build. |

Well, this explains why I have so much trouble ADS on rifles and turrets even after I turned the sensitivity all the way to zero... |

I started running with a Breach Shotgun on my Logistics class, since I feel it helps me defend a smaller area quite well. Especially in some Skirmish matches at the objectives, but, I'm still finding I miss at distances less than a meter aiming at the upper torso/ head. I hope its not lag, I'm running 40mb/s through an Ethernet cord. So I don't think it's only you man. |

Yes, this is essentially what i do also and really everyone should, but if my lead is too much and i'm still not hitting for some reason, i drag my burst of shots from the right side of him across his face toward the left. Then i lead him again from the right and drag to the left again. This isn't always necessary but on hard to hit targets or days when i'm just "off", it does the job, for me at least. It seems to be more effective than constantly wiggling back and forth fighting the sensitivity to find the proper lead just for him to change speed or direction and screw you all up again.

It's really strange, and I can't put my finger on it just yet, but I have made about 4 or 5 different character builds and each time I do it, I get one weapon super accurate and one that can't hit a person standing still 2 feet in front of me.
I made a Heavy build with a sub machinegun a week ago and I could mow down enemies pretty easily, while they were in range. However, other weapons functioned normally.
I remade my build, and got the same level in sub machine gun. However, I can't hit a thing with the same gun, and same skills, even if they are standing still right in front of me. I even went as far as to toss the gun and use pistols instead.
Why I bring this up is because the build I have now is extremely accurate with assault rifles, however I only have 1 point in the assault weapon skill tree.
It really seems like no matter what you do to improve some weapons, they wont improve. While some weapons are monsters for no reason. That might not be your case, but if you feel like you are getting robbed repeatedly, you might try making a 2nd character and trying again. |

I'm an average player and last build I hit most of what I shot at but this build it's like I've never played an fps in my life.
I treid something out last night I played a bit of dust and it was hit and miss with my shooting, switched to Bf and I was ok I hit what I shot at tacking out 2,3 players at a time if the situation was good, then I went back to dust and I had trouble again.
So I dont think it's you mate I think some thing not quite right this build |

Are you all turning on the aim assist?. I noticed the same thing when we came over to the new build, suddenly I couldn't hit anything.
All I had to do is go into the options menue and turn on aim assist and that was it, I hit most yarhets, obviously I still have to lead the target.
If you have already turned it on and are still having problems try sneaking behind people, don't fire until you have a clear shot at their head. Do it in controlled 5 round bursts to stop the kick.
Hope this helps |

Why in hell do i see so many people saying this ? I have absolutely no problem aiming and killing people. And no i'm not at 15 million SP or something. As a matter of fact i started this build last week. And i'm doing perfectly fine with my lvl 3 AR operation, lvl 2 Range and a regular full auto rifle.
Some of you people just cant figure out how to adjust your shots.
Still, i'll give you that sometimes, games are VERY laggy and nothing hits (and i usually get kicked from the server) and also, soldiers overall have too much HP. |

Go play any other top tier shooter and compare the mechanics. They just don't compare at present. There's not enough tactile and aural feedback in Dust yet. |

We say this because we've been here for a few builds and you notice the difference, and if so many are posting about it (search there are lots) then something isn't right.
It's not hp your fighting it's shields and armour thats why ttk seems high but I prefer it that way at least you get a chance to fight back |

Been there since first build dude.. So i noticed the enhancement in the aim and hit detection.
And at the moment it's quite fine. Adjustments can still be made but saying it can't be compared to other shooters is wrong. If the mecanics was so broken, how could anyone frag as much as some (and i) does ?
And yes i played other shooters. MAG for a thousand hours, BF3 a hundred, CS for 6 years.
What i see is that i can frag and dont complain very often about not hitting people. So why do so many struggle ?
Yet, i agree it can still be enhanced : a more fluid and bit more accurate aim would be nice. But when i read some people, i just want to say "get good scrub". |

Look, it's simple. The gunplay isn't up to scratch. It just isn't.
You can say "go back to CoD" or "get good scrubs" all you like. That's precisely what the vast majority will do. They don't care about objectives, they don't care about RPG elements, they don't care about corporations et al.
They just want fast-paced, fluid gameplay with great weapon variety and plenty of action. For numerous reasons, DUST isn't providing that experience as of now.
If DUST doesn't pull big numbers to support it, it will die off quickly. To pull big numbers, it has to have excellent core mechanics. Right now, it doesn't. Will it have them in future builds? That remains to be seen. |
