Would you all calm the hell down?
We are not here to post raging threads about whether or not FPS players are any better than Eve players or vise versa. We are here to test the game and assist CCP (who will make the final decision anyways, not us) in developing Dust 514 into the best game possible.
I'm an Eve Online player with almost 5 years experience in pvp, industry and now dabbling into trade. But I am also a dedicated Halo fan since the day the first Xbox (that big clunky black box with an giant X on it) hit the market. I have also played Call of Duty, KillZone, Battlefield, Ghost Recon, a little bit of Counter Strike, and Gears of War. But I'm still an Eve Online player by heart. But you don't see me bashing console players, do you?
I want both sides of the fence to work together to make Dust 514 better and unique compared to all the themepark-driven games we have seen so far. There are also MAG players here who want to work with Eve players to help Dust 514 balanced and to avoid going down the dark path that MAG unfortunately went through just like how Eve players want to avoid turning Eve into just another WoW.
My point is that console FPS players and PC Eve players have far more in common than you think. Sure, we have our differences, but that doesn't mean we should act like children and bicker over stupid things like the US Congress.
Also...
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I will not accept the notion that Eve players should stop first with the asshattery if FPS players want to get along. The exact same thing will be stated for the FPS players being required to stop first with the asshattery.
I kindly request that all of us, both Eve and FPS players stop this at once. It's annoying and childish and serves no purpose than make us look idiotic in the eyes of CCP games and the rest of the gaming community at large assuming CCP decides to lift the NDA and reveals everything we posted here.
Let's just work together to ensure that Dust 514 is balanced and that we keep each other informed about the changes that have happened and what is to happen according to CCP. This is CCP's work after all, not ours as CCP has the final say on how the last brush stroke will be made.
If we keep acting childish and post childish ideas simply because we couldn't settle our damn differences, then obviously Dust 514 will fail because we failed to work together and work on common ground which could've prevented this theoretical disaster.
Is that what you all want? To ruin Dust 514's chances of succeeding? Then all I got to say to that is that is a sign of some sort of mental illness. I mean, what possible gain could there be from doing this? To satisfy our irrelevant e-pride on who is right and who is wrong? To make one side of the fence feel better that they have put down those on the other side of the fence?
Seriously, I'm sick of this. I'm dead serious on this. I'm not joking here.
Dust 514 can only be a great game so long as we respect each others opinions and no wave around our useless e-pride. Dust 514 can only be a major fail if we act like it.
If you want to keep acting like asshats, then at least make sure you save that for in-game lulz like when you scam someone in Jita or when you constantly stab that one dude with the Nova Knife and he has no clue what's happening or when you post on the Fail Heap Challenge forums or on the regular Eve forums or whatever public forum you go to. Save the asshattery for that. The beta forums, a place where CCP looks into for our input on an incomplete game that hasn't even hit the market yet, is not the best place for that.
So let us all settle our differences right here right now and work together to make Dust 514 better than all the other games out there. Let's show the world how themepark games are about to become a thing of the past and that the sandbox is the wave of the future. |

Sorry, I'm damaged goods. I agree with you except for the bit about EvE players stopping first. Aren't you guys the big mature community? Not total arsehats? SoTosch, but while we probably feel the same on this, I'll continue to defend my ideals. I really have no love for EvE, and when people bang on about how "I don't get it" it's just stupid. I DO get it. I really don't like the people's attitudes. Would you hang around with thieves and fraudsters IRL? No? Then why do it in EvE? You know? Oh yeah, because you think EvE is a cruel universe... No... You just act like arsehats whenever you can. I realise it's only about 20% of the EvE population. But as the saying goes "**** sticks" |

I don't really understand why some people really care what people they've never met before think about them. I mean, I think it's funny, but some people really seem to be hurt by it. Once the game goes live, no one is going to care if you played Eve or if you played some console FPS. The only thing that matters is how well you play Dust. |

Like I said, I don't give a damn about how you folks act in other places or games. But please keep civility in the Beta Forums on a game that hasn't been finished yet.
If I didn't speak up about this and Dust 514 fails, then I will feel responsible for not trying to keep people civil here.
@Tony
Whatever happens in the Eve forums stays on the Eve forums. It's like Las Vegas. I don't want to get into a debate about that as I am indifferent about who should act civil first because I feel that everyone (not just one side) should start acting civil at the same time if we are to make this unfinished game succeed.
@Abron
You'd be surprised. It's part of our human nature to care about what others think of us even if we never met them in person. Of course, until the game goes live as you said. But the game has not gone live... has it? No. So until then, we have a duty to perform as a community of multiple communities and that is to test Dust 514 and help balance it until completion. |

I'm going to let you in on a secret. You touched on it earlier. Probably 90% of those people who say "lol imma OS you" probably has never stepped out of hisec and I bet they would try and bring a BS to OS, and cry sad delicious tears as it gets destroyed by a few frigates. It's more that it detracts an details good debates about things. I cba to go searching, copying and pasting, but the "let's talk FPS mechanics" is a good example. Basically any threa goin 20 pages only goes that long because of 10 page of trolling, quotes, and people having personal arguments. I'm as guilty as any for being drawn into them. Tbh I think I'm just sick of people who dont get why certain games attract certain crowds. Look at CS. Still one of the most popular FPS games on the planet. 50,000 people playing that right now on steam. Another 40,000 on CS:S. These are PURE FPS games with no grinding and no RPG elements. So remind me again how people play to lvl in FPS's? Still there are posts on here "people will only play until te next shiny game comes out". Right. Yeah. Because CS is still most popular steam FPS. If we can just get the gun game "right". Edit: more people playing CS&CS:S than all the CoD's combined. |

The console vs eve war is part of new eden history whether you like it or not. I'm sure ccp is used to making a game with drama all over the forums. Did everybody just get along on the original eve beta forums? This is actually something that might effect the storyline in one way or another.
Eve players will be notoriously mistrusted throughout the console community because of your backstabbing ways. I won't associate myself with any of you unless I have to. Admitting to being an eve player in game might actually turn out to **** you over once FF is implemented.

I have not seen that happen so far. I have mentioned to other in game that I am an eve player and I have yet to run into anyone who threatened to gut me like a fish because of that. I have however seen plenty of people threaten others to gut them like a fish in game for either being idiots or just disregarding orders.
But the point you made is what I am trying to bring awareness to. We have far too many people here on both sides of the fence (fps players and eve players alike) who are just too damn concerned about their e-pride rather than working towards a common goal we all share. But if enough players from both sides of the fence truly love the game and want the game to be truly unique and better than everything else, then it will be within their best interest to work together and bring down that fence.
As to the person who posted about some carpenter being nailed onto some wood 2000 years ago: he knew what he was getting into but that sure didn't stop him. |

Evetards are the ones doing most of the trolling. The best part is you are all carbon copies. Its funny that you guys are the ones coming forward asking for a truce.

I have no personal beef with you or the fps crowd. I am merely wanting to bring down the divide that separates you and I so that we can work together and make Dust a great game. Some eve players like to try and grief people and that's just how it is. Its not going to stop. New eden thrives on drama, backstabbing and trolling. No amount of optimism is going to change that.

Most of it honestly is console guys coming in and saying dumb stuff like " add killstreaks " "run faster with a knife" "put jets in the game", etc. These ideas are understandably getting flamed, righteously.
Then you have eve players (such as myself) , asking to put things in that are actually IN eve. The flaming is inevitable because you have a more patient, mature playerbase arguing with another playerbase who wants another fast paced twitch shooter piece of garbage. |

Thats a another huge misconception and another reason why eve players come off as smug assholes. Saying one playerbase is more mature then the other is incredibly ignorant. Every playerbase has their tards. Not every console player wants a balistic knife, jets and killstreaks in this game. You generalize us into one category and I have had time believing you are very mature at all.
Right now we are are the minority. In history the minority has almost always been discriminated against unfairly. That's what you have done to us. Some eve players are less mature then the average 12 year old playing CoD and blasting music over the mic. |

Actually Crimson we're were/are already the majority. Just no-one really gives 2 tosses about EvE unless you play EvE. And when people are welcomed in the fashion the MAG crowd were, people just leave. Especially when it's a beta an there's no clans or anything. I think Tosch's thread is ok, but what is more important is that it doesn't happen again on release. That's like the best way to kill Dust. Everyone who joins forums gets spam bottled with "Go back to CoD" or some other equally backwards "cultural mainstay." (EvE didn't get 10k beta codes...they're a bit short on numbers in EvE) |

Haha you definitely need more brains to play EvE then a numpty fps like cod. The reason why i put you all in the same category is because its the people in that category that are requesting the stupidest things, aka killstreaks. Them you have a bunch of idiots saying they'll friendly fire all the eve guys in dust. You can call me ignorant if you want but I really don't care, most of the good ideas are coming from eve players because they actually know New Eden, whereas people coming from a twitch shooter are offering recycled ideas from previous games theyve played. |

I have no personal beef with you or the fps crowd. I am merely wanting to bring down the divide that separates you and I so that we can work together and make Dust a great game. But if you wish to continue the personal bickering just like the Evetards or just like the FPS Epeen forum warriors, then this discussion between you and me is over. That's the problem though. You do not speak on their behalf. This thread serves no purpose other then optimism. Some eve players like to try and grief people and that's just how it is. Its not going to stop. New eden thrives on drama, backstabbing and trolling. No amount of optimism is going to change that. Welcome to new eden.
For someone who sounds so peeved off at Eve players for being arrogant assholes, you sure are acting like them. I guess this conversation between you and me really is over because you sound like the sort of person who thrives of driving a wedge in this community with that attitude of yours.

So now this thread turned into exactly the opposite of what the OP wanted, too bad. Thing is, if you get fps players knowledge about proper fps mechanics combined with eve player knowledge of the eve lore and mmo mechanics you'd get a pretty good game. If only people could set their ego aside and give the namecalling a rest, that'd be a huge improvement. |

Well maybe if Calif wasn't such an Asshat. Lol I jest. And as much as I like the thought, did it really need a thread? I agree though. The Better Minds Movement would be good to see.

I agree. It's so sad that there are people (***looking at certain Eve and FPS players***) who just don't seem to set aside their egos for the sake of improving the gaming experience. But we have to move on and push on to bring down the barriers that divide both Eve players and FPS players so that Dust can improve. I don't want CCP to have to lock this thread in any way. |

I applaud the intention of the OP to calm things down. After all as Gorge Carlin would say: "War is just a lot of men standing around in a field waving their p ricks at one another. That is why all the rockets and bullets are shaped like d*cks, its the subconscious need to f*ck with other people". All gaming communities seem to follow the same principle. Over the last 20+ years of playing different kind of online games, I have yet to find a forum where players have only gentle pillow fights, and always cuddle afterward . And if they do, the pillows are usually filled with sharp rocks instead of feathers.
I think in that respect the EVE community only differs from any other gaming community in their almost perverse pride in openly admitting: "I love griefing other people, I am lean and mean and I live in a dark universe" I played EVE for 3 years and it took me almost 2 to get used to this all pervasive macho badassery - especially since I mostly played a carebear industrialist. At some point I simple realized - without those null sec a-holes I wouldn't have anything to do.
On the other hand EVE is one of the most fascinating and steadfast communities that I ever encountered. Many people stop playing EVE for a while and move on to other games, but they always return. I have not been playing for almost 2 years now, because I lacked a more casual game style. But I never stopped following their internal developments and now I came back because of Dust and Factional Warfare revamp. I know some players who do not play anymore but they still visit the EVE funfest in Reykjavik every year. I think that despite all the badass attitudes I encountered in EVE, it is a game that actually inspires loyalty and trust in the long run.
When it comes to all the arguing EVE vs FPS, KB&M vs DS3, PC vs Console: If you want to make an omelet you have to brake some eggs, and as far as I understand it, CCP is attempting something that has never been attempted before. Naturally, the FPS elite will say fail because DUST is too slow or too RPG like - if it does not meet their usual expectations, lets blame the nasty and arrogant EVE players. On the other side of the barricade the vocal minority, mostly null-sec fascists, say fail because they are afraid that their precious chaos and anarchy is being threaten by some more chaos - yes EVE is full of such paradoxes and I guess that's what makes it so fun.
I think there is no real creativity without some creative tension, you cannot discover new possibilities if you don't risk the impossible - Unfortunately, to the surface observer this unfamiliar pattern usually feels as something wrong.
"There is no way to make people like change. You can only make them feel less threatened by it.GÇ¥ - Frederick O'R. Hayes
Keeping in mind that DUST 514 is not supposed to be your typical FPS, I have a strong faith in CCP being able to successfully accomplish their goal.
If you look around there are not many truly innovative games out there. Most games are becoming mindless grinds and are consumed and spat out by the hungry locust players almost before they are fully released. EA Star Wars The Old Republic is a perfect example of this: A gigantic investment to make an epic game, instead an epic fail of yet another WoW clone.
CCP is actually one of the few companies trying something new. They are fiercely loyal to their players, yes I have no doubt that already includes all their Dust beta testers, and they are not afraid to admit their mistakes. - To those of you truly interested in getting to know CCP as a company I recommend reading about CCP CEO publicly apologizing to EVE players - And it wasn't just some PR stunt, after their apology CCP actually made some major corrections to their development goals and strategy.
Personally I think we have enough people who love telling us how things are and how they should remain. Instead I would like to listen to someone who dares to say how it could be and therefore I bet on CCP. We can help them balancing and improving this game and continue deeper into the rabbit hole or we can simply stay within our comfort zone confident that it is the arrogant players on the other side of the barricade that are ruining my game. |

The problem there is how to keep the tension beneficial. Not too long ago, we just had Eve and FPS players going at each others throats over petty differences. If tension is needed, then we have to make sure that it's the good tension. Otherwise Dust will tear itself apart before it is even finished. |

Thats the problem with tension, it does not feel comfortable while its there, and it narrows the mind instead of opening it. Narrow focus is very useful in PVP, on forums such tension can be kind of cleansing up to a point, but too much is simply toxic... |

Absolutely, and not only that - EVE has CSM (Council of Stellar Management ), a democratically elected body of players who represent our needs and views in front of CCP. It's a new kind of MMO politics on a grand scale. Some people claim that CSM has very little impact because CCP has the ultimate power of veto, nevertheless just the fact that CSM has become an official part of the development consultations is an incredible success for the EVE community.
It seems that CCP takes this democratic experiment very seriously and I am pretty sure that ultimately the elite FPS console players will also get their say. It's a slow process because it tries to balance CCP's commitment to innovation and the existing needs and expectations of both console and EVE players. This is an incredibly exiting and risky challenge but I am reasonably confident that CCP is flexible enough to surf the wave rather then trying to control its flow. |

RIght on!!!!!!! |

Bravo to Maken and Kev!! I have been trying to point these things out without stirring up too much more animosity. I love EVE. I don't play it steadily due to RL, so I don't get to go into NUL sec, as I don't have the resources to resupply. I love FPS games, although I am limited on experience on them. I have never played MAG, but I wouldn't mind giving it a try. Sounds like it is a great game.
I know how nasty of a place EVE can be. I stick too myself for the most part. I live by the motto "Don't trust anyone". Even though there is a lot of backstabbing, scamming, and other dirty things that go on, there are also many friendly people that are willing to help out new players. I don't visit the EVE forums much, so I can't comment on how bad those are. I have been in other beta forums, and they were never this heated. Then again, DUST is a whole new breed of game, thus 2 totally different types of gamers giving their opinions.
I for one am thankful that there are good FPS players here. They can offer some really good suggestions on how to improve the mechanics of the FPS side. On the flip side, good EVE players can offer good suggestion on how fittings, the market, etc. should be. I just read the CSM notes. The things they have planed for NULL sec and FW, market integration, etc., is pretty incredible. For those that don't follow EVE, maybe at least read those notes. At least the section dealing with DUST. The majority of it is EVE stuff. It might help in understanding where CCP is heading with everything, including corps and null sec.
As for the "toxicity" of the forums. Please, let's keep the pc/console wars down. When new players come in and not sure what all is going on and read the forums, they can get a nasty taste in their mouth about this game and community. These things can keep players away, and drive existing ones out. Like the others stated, wait till launch when everyone will be a bit more seperated. Right now, we need to focus on improving the game. Will there be eliteists who expect certain things to be implemented? Of course. But lets not feed those. Not all EVE players expect DUST to run like EVE. I know not all FPS players want this to be another MAG or CoD. But there are things from those games that could be beneficial though. CCP will look into those things and see if it fits into their ideas. I like hearing ideas from other games. Some I like, some not so much. Not sure what killstreaks is all about though.
I enjoy playing this game. I look forward to more things being added. I have enjoyed playing with many of you. Some not so much, as you kill me too much. But I adapt and move on. Let's all move on. Hopefully to bigger and better guns, with lots of pretty light beams and things that go boom, instead of...... |

Seriously....
Also : anyone that has actually experience on both sides DOESNT give a **** about all this and MAY actually judge. On the other hand, people who are one-sided should just shut the f*ck up.

My little part of this community service is to prepare those console kids to the EVE forums.
They still got lots to learn, so easily unhinged. |

That's exactly what we as a community are suppose to address. Such behavior, especially in large doses, is poisonous to the development of the game. Kind of like feeding liquor to a fetus. |

What so because im a "stupid" console player my suggestion to stick to dust eve roots are stupid? |

The greatest war of all is not the war between 2 groups of different backgrounds. No, it is when those 2 groups try to get together to do something.
I applaud you for fighting the trolls. Alas, you'll never beat them, but we might as well get as many people to join the "good" side.
@Kev You sir, deserve the internets. All of them. Most beautiful post ever. :'D
What CCP is doing here is stirring up a hornets nest, so the can move it out of the way, and establish a tree house. Its gonna be a long road of trolling, hatred, bitterness, realization, forgiveness, compromising, agreement, establishment, and love (probably in that order). Both sides have interesting points, but neither side has to argue and hate the other side. We're going to make some compromises, good and bad, so let's just see what happens. I guess we've got a long road ahead, so we might as well make it a little shorter by getting rid of our differences. Neither side is superior. That is all.

@Sandromin
You are absolutely right. Trying to convince two different groups like the Eve Online (PC) players and the FPS (console) players is the single greatest war of all time. If we as a beta community representing multiple communities set aside our petty differences (all at the same time - no exception) and work together as a single unit with a purpose, then Dust 514 could one day usher in a new era of how players of different play styles see each other.
