So I had a thought about Scouts and the sniping profession. I haven't really tried being a sniper, so I don't really know the current mechanics of the gun, but I would hate to see scouts be able to run around hip-firing the sniper rifle instakilling people at close to medium range. It's not a shotgun.
I also would like to see the ability to go prone and to crawl. If the scout has his sniper rifle out, he should move EXTREMELY slow. Akin to a heavy. If they try to hip-fire the gun, the refire rate is way slower, and the accuracy is penalized greatly - ie they won't be able to hit the broad side of a barn while hip-firing.
But when crouched or prone, the sniper fulfills his role on the battlefield, being able to gain significant accuracy.
Finally, it would be great to be able to shoulder or holster weapons. This would allow the scout to run long distances with the rifle on his back, and when in position he gets it out and sets up his nest. |

From my experience, I think noscoping with sniper rifles is impossible. As for the crouching, the only way to effectively snipe is to crouch without moving. Even standing still scoped in results in massive sway, even more if moving while scoped. Moving while crouching is almost the equivalent to a crawl |

Yes, I haven't really seen too many Scouts running around hip-firing their sniper rifles, but I had a thought about it.
Still, being able to put your rifle on your back to run a little faster would be good, as well as the ability to go prone and crawl. I really think they should add that ability as soon as possible. Hell, crawling around would (should) keep people from getting gumba-squished by dropships... |

Yeah hip firing with the sniper rifle is really difficult. I've only done it like twice and the second time the guy lived, and killed me. I don't think its going to be a really big problem. |

Had a sniper hip fire and (apparently) blew my head off of my protosuit the other day... one shot quick kill as we came face-to-face. Could have been skill on his part, or pure luck. When I saw him at close contact distance my initial thought was "He is going to be my b***h." I was a bit shocked when I found out just how wrong I was.
That being said, I am not unhappy about it. I doesn't happen a lot, and I kill a lot more snipers than they kill me (I think). It doesn't happen enough to change the game dynamics as far as I am concerned. |

As a sniper, i think these suggestions are impractical and dumb. Prone i can maybe see being good, but negative effects for carrying a sniper rifle? How in the nine hells does that even make sense? Scout suits are made to be quick and light how can you justify a soldier moving like a heavy for carrying a sniper rifle?
How are you even offering suggestions for a class youve never played?

I don't need to play Scout to be able to see lopsided game mechanics. Scoutsuits are for scouting enemy positions, not a combat role, unless they are a sniper - which isn't meant to be a mobile combat role. Snipers in real life get prone because they are harder to spot by other snipers or those trying to determine sniper locations to call in an airstrike. I think the game would be much better if snipers worked like this. Deadly and invisible at long range, but hampered and useless if not in position. This is why they carry an SMG or sidearm, if someone stumbles upon them at close range.
The whole idea I had for shouldering your sniper weapon was that it allows them to be quick and light. A sniper rifle is a heavy piece of equipment.

So your argument is that a sniper rifle should apply a movement penalty to our powered armor exoskeletons like an armor plate does?
I'm not in support of weapon specific movement penalties & to say that a "sniper rifle is heavy" without saying the same thing about a swarm laucher is ridiculous. Each weapon has it's own powergrid requirement. I imagine that part of that grid is used to power the weapon itself & the other part is intended to represent the strain it puts on the suit while it's being wielded.
In this game the "heavy" pieces of equipment are heavy machine guns & forge guns. Everything else is considered "light". "Light" weapons can be carried without putting additional strain on the suit's capacity. Heavy weapons can only be carried by a "Heavy" suit because they would put too much strain on a lesser suit. Knowing what I know about tech, makes sense to me. |

Snipers shoot in the prone position because it offers a stable shooting base virtually anywhere. Theres a lot of misconceptions about snipers... Like shooting from a window. You're also saying all sniper rifles are heavy, which is false. A lot of them (like a dragunov, m14ebr, etc, weigh as much as assault rifles. So... Maybe we need to make assault rifles give a slow speed debuff as well as make heavys even more slower due to heavy armor and the huge weapons they carry?

It's fine as is, scout suits are not as tough (shield/armor) as the other suits, but move faster. Who cares what gun they are carrying. |

If you are no scoping, stop now. Use an SMG and move all around the enemy with your speed blasting bullets into them. Also before you ask quickscoping only works with the Ishukone and takes extreme practice. |

I can imagine a sniper rifle in use in the far future would have a heavy rated gryoscope. One rated at 60lbs is nearly impossible to hold onto at full spin up hell the 2 lb one was hard enough as it was. |

No, I guess the idea being that Scouts are quick, but not as strong, and yes many modern sniper rifles are light because modern sniper rifles still use the same basic mechanics as every other weapons, just made with lighter materials.
But Dust snipers are using rails - significantly heavier than an AR that uses charged plasma slugs. TBH I'm more thinking of size & weight from a pure design/art standpoint, similar to making explosions much more dramatic than they really are in real life.
Sure, your sniper rifle could in theory be just as heavy as the basic AR, however it's larger & bulkier, and stands to reason that someone with a light frame and small amount of strength wouldn't want to run around the battlefield carrying the sniper rifle as they would an assault rifle.
That's all I was thinking about. It just kinda looks ridiculous watching small, quick scouts running around with sniper rifles as if they were Assault Rifles. Then I got to thinking how this game is missing the prone position & crawling, which is a pretty big way to keep your head safe sometimes. I see no harm in giving players the prone position by holding the crouch button, and making the sniper rifle slow your overall speed when it's selected as the main weapon. |

It's fine, there's a lot of sway at first when aiming, which settles down. I don't think I've ever been hipshot by a sniper, and they are always found in places you'd expect, not running around like a Shotgun scout.
Btw, swarm launchers are more heavy than sniper rifles.. and with advanced technology powered suits and construction technology, sniper rifles could be very low weight. I'm fine with slow movement when aiming, but just running around you should be fast from A to Z. |

i can do a kind of quickscope with the sniper rifle (scope in for 1 second before hitting my target), and pretty successful doing so when im messing about,i actually am running around on the ground with team mates picking off distant targets we see, but yeah, firing from the hip is completely random and very very hard to pull off, i have only managed to do it about 2 times while testing as my suit's pg/cpu dont let me use a secondary :P. |

This sortof confirms my thoughts on the matter. It will only become more prevalent that snipers will pick up this skill (which don't get me wrong, it does take lots of skill to do), however it's a bit game-breaking in that I don't think snipers were ever meant to be used as run-n-gun units. |

Dont agree wit the sniper having a movement nerf for it, its a long range rifle like an assault is a rapid fire rifle they would way the same. Also the should a speed nerf be attached to the gun my sniper build relies on my proto assault suit(being durable over movement) why should I recieve a movement nerf?
Also its insanely hard to quickscope or hipfire but its possible for a realy skilled player, ive done it dont know about others |

You're probably right, after putting some more thought into it, that the sniper rifle won't severely impact the movement speed of a Scoutsuit. I still think a prone position would be a welcome addition (except heavy weapons). |

I like how the scope takes a while to settle down and moving makes it sway.
Snipers should have to be stationary to be effective, and that's how it seems. |
