So I had a thought about Scouts and the sniping profession. I haven't really tried being a sniper, so I don't really know the current mechanics of the gun, but I would hate to see scouts be able to run around hip-firing the sniper rifle instakilling people at close to medium range. It's not a shotgun.
I also would like to see the ability to go prone and to crawl. If the scout has his sniper rifle out, he should move EXTREMELY slow. Akin to a heavy. If they try to hip-fire the gun, the refire rate is way slower, and the accuracy is penalized greatly - ie they won't be able to hit the broad side of a barn while hip-firing.
But when crouched or prone, the sniper fulfills his role on the battlefield, being able to gain significant accuracy.
Finally, it would be great to be able to shoulder or holster weapons. This would allow the scout to run long distances with the rifle on his back, and when in position he gets it out and sets up his nest. |

Yes, I haven't really seen too many Scouts running around hip-firing their sniper rifles, but I had a thought about it.
Still, being able to put your rifle on your back to run a little faster would be good, as well as the ability to go prone and crawl. I really think they should add that ability as soon as possible. Hell, crawling around would (should) keep people from getting gumba-squished by dropships... |

I don't need to play Scout to be able to see lopsided game mechanics. Scoutsuits are for scouting enemy positions, not a combat role, unless they are a sniper - which isn't meant to be a mobile combat role. Snipers in real life get prone because they are harder to spot by other snipers or those trying to determine sniper locations to call in an airstrike. I think the game would be much better if snipers worked like this. Deadly and invisible at long range, but hampered and useless if not in position. This is why they carry an SMG or sidearm, if someone stumbles upon them at close range.
The whole idea I had for shouldering your sniper weapon was that it allows them to be quick and light. A sniper rifle is a heavy piece of equipment.

Theres a lot of misconceptions about snipers... Like shooting from a window. You're also saying all sniper rifles are heavy, which is false. A lot of them (like a dragunov, m14ebr, etc, weigh as much as assault rifles. So... Maybe we need to make assault rifles give a slow speed debuff as well as make heavys even more slower due to heavy armor and the huge weapons they carry?
No, I guess the idea being that Scouts are quick, but not as strong, and yes many modern sniper rifles are light because modern sniper rifles still use the same basic mechanics as every other weapons, just made with lighter materials.
But Dust snipers are using rails - significantly heavier than an AR that uses charged plasma slugs. TBH I'm more thinking of size & weight from a pure design/art standpoint, similar to making explosions much more dramatic than they really are in real life.
Sure, your sniper rifle could in theory be just as heavy as the basic AR, however it's larger & bulkier, and stands to reason that someone with a light frame and small amount of strength wouldn't want to run around the battlefield carrying the sniper rifle as they would an assault rifle.
That's all I was thinking about. It just kinda looks ridiculous watching small, quick scouts running around with sniper rifles as if they were Assault Rifles. Then I got to thinking how this game is missing the prone position & crawling, which is a pretty big way to keep your head safe sometimes. I see no harm in giving players the prone position by holding the crouch button, and making the sniper rifle slow your overall speed when it's selected as the main weapon. |

This sortof confirms my thoughts on the matter. It will only become more prevalent that snipers will pick up this skill (which don't get me wrong, it does take lots of skill to do), however it's a bit game-breaking in that I don't think snipers were ever meant to be used as run-n-gun units. |

You're probably right, after putting some more thought into it, that the sniper rifle won't severely impact the movement speed of a Scoutsuit. I still think a prone position would be a welcome addition (except heavy weapons). |
