This game is awesome!! Sure there is still some bugs, and the game needs waaaaay more polish but that's what we're here for......
But this whole time I'm thinking to myself how much cooler it would be with more terrain destruction; not just a turret exploding or a clone bay blowing up.. Real terrain destruction, like parts of the biomass spire falling on tanks and people, or those massive pipes in the plateau map breaking apart as the people below scatter, running for their lives!
I know, I know impossible right? Even if they had it laid out, would the U3 engine even be able to do it justice? Hey doesn't CCP have some DICE guys loitering around there these days? How about that awesome Carbon engine they have been building and tweaking? Hows the physics engine in that? (I'm sorry in advance for my lack of research) The clothes and lighting looks amazing in that! To bad we wont see any dust players wearing any dresses to battle
If you devigods are listening, I know you've thought about it... I just want you to know I've thought about it too and I think its a great idea!
I guess I'm just mad that terrain destruction isn't here on release and I don't wanna wait for it! Do i really have to wait until the PS4 to find this awesome idea iterated into DUST?

There really aren't a lot of houses or anything so I'm not sure how much mileage you'd really get out of something like the Frostbite engine's Destruction x.0 business. And are there any examples of that kind of thing being done with the Unreal 3 engine? |

I doubt we are going to see terrain destruction being how difficult it would be to implement.
But remember, when you give players the option to blow up buildings and structures, the whole map tends to be leveled in the first few minutes anyway. Now, if players were charged ISK for the amount of collateral damage to the city, that would be interesting. |

Does anyone remember the first red faction? Now that's the kinda of destructible environment I'd like to see. |

The geo-mod in that game was pretty good for a game that old.

CCP have to make other kinds of decisions when it comes to features like destruction -- even if the engine could do it there's only so much processing power and bandwidth to go around (we talked about this in a "number of players" thread). If CCP allocated resources to destruction we might have to give up player count or some interactivity or map size or ... you know.
That being said, blowing through a hill to make a new path to an objective would be very neat. And like the OP said, bringing down a tower on a tank would be pretty awesome too. Now being charged for the tower you just blew up -- not so nice. |

Well, i don't know about that level of destruction but rockets do make buildings collapse if you shoot enough of them i.e rockets of the future should collapse buildings of the future!
And if any server could handle that bandwidth and processing power it would be CCP's right? |

I can't think of a single game with terrain deformation, except that game by lucas arts. Um whatsit called.
That would be cool, craters and such caused by orbital strikes. Hide in them, use them as cover. Like a real battlefield. |

I'm sure there's another current-gen title from a well-known developer or publisher, but I forgot the name and details. There's an obvious problem here though. Not one of those games can be said to be a fast-paced multiplayer shooter with current-gen (for its time) graphics and quality gameplay. They're all cutting corners on at least a couple of points that a lot of people care about. |

I wasn't thinking so much about the server as about the network and the PS3 client. I completely agree CCP have good server credentials.

But if we were working for a Coporation and we started destroying all of their building which they spent ISK on why would they pay us? |

In a way it's little silly for us to talk about this -- structure damage probably won't happen (if at all) for a long while.
But if we leave that aside, the question becomes "would it be a better game if the people fighting on the planets had to be careful about what they blew up"? On the other side, if the people who hired you wanted the place leveled, or certain structures damaged, would that add anything to the game?
It's the same for terrain deformation. Would the game be a better game if we could blast our way through mountains? Would it be worth leaving out some texture detail? Would it be worth slowing the game down?

I agree with almost everything you guys have been saying except 2 points...
1- blowing up mountains would be a little to much 2- Im not sure if "we dont have the tech to pull this off right" is going to fly these days, what with thos kind of game mechanic has been around for almost a decade. |

I think I understand your point -- all those things do exist in games using current technology. What I'm suggesting for DUST with the current PS3 is that we can't have them all in the same game.
If we want cutting edge graphics we may have to give up something in number of players and destructible environments. If we want destructible environments we may have to give up something in map size and graphics.
That will change somewhat with the new generation of consoles -- but while it moves the bar I don't think it removes the constraints completely.
Four DUST, can we help CCP set priorities? Do we want a little of everything but not the best of anything? Do we want game play and number of players to be everything even if graphics suffer?
