My suggestion is to have a rating system. Something like:
((Avg dropship life time in minutes) x (Avg dps output per minute)) + (+bonus per rep cycle) (+bonus for surviving significant damage) (+ insert bonus here)
So this might look like:
(5 mins x 100dps) + 50 repair bonus + 100 for surviving with shilds at 0% and armor at 5% = 600 Rating Total
All number pulled out of thin air and have no real meaning!
So we have a starting point, questions? comments?

I don't know about public rating system, but it would be nice to get points for piloting a dropship well. Other than for bunny hopping onto people. |

Fine if your corp / alliance wants to rate DS pilots, but there is really no good reason to create a system like for every day use. Your criteria for what makes a good DS pilot is always going to be different from mine. Additionally, by creating a system like this you are creating a system where DS pilots become pigeon holed into what this system classifies as a good DS pilot. Any pilot who tries to go against that pigeon hole becomes an outcast / pariah

Just see how high they fly up, and you get a general idea. |

As someone who is trying out piloting a dropship in the Beta, I am also concerned about recognition in the ladders for pilots and other non-direct-combat roles (logi, command, etc.)
Battlefield is, to me, the gold standard here (if you disagree, go nuts, please!). Every role gets recognition and, for a squad and objective based game like Dust, Battlefield's slight favourable points leaning towards support roles and objectives should also be a must.
For dropship pilots, I can definitely see the difficulty creating a workable scoring system for dropship pilots. The work a drop pilot does has so many knock-on effects that measuring their impact can be tricky. As a suggestion, perhaps anything someone does in the, say, 30 seconds after they disembark earns the pilot support points? Kills, captures, etc.
Edit:

Cancelling an enemy "virus upload" or "reboot" on an objective (A, B, C), repairing teammates with repair nanohives, destroying enemy drop uplinks and nanohives, people spawning in your dropship. I find it very strange that these things don't get rewarded at all with points despite their obvious team benefits.
THIS +1. |
