Been playing on the same map now for 3 weeks straight! Its quite tedious. Seeing how the game is supposedly scheduled to launch within the next couple of months or so, wouldn't testing various maps help in the development of the game tremendously? |

Um, they don't particularly need to test the maps. They randomly generate the terrain and add in buildings into slots. If they wanted you to test every map, you'd have to test... um... what was that number? 3k x 12 = 36k maps. Good luck with that.
Seeing as they've released three maps, and all seem to work well, I'd say that CCP's map generator is doing well. |

I don't think anyone is asking to test out ALL the thousands of maps that are supposedly appearing in the final build. But it sure is odd with the approaching acknowledged release date--Q4,2012--that we aren't playing a few more maps to test how they randomly generate, the different play styles on different varieties, or even how the diifferent terrain setups will effect balnce between teams.
............Maybe this game will be delayed and not release in 2012 at all. It happens all the time to other properties.

Well, what they do is they generate a map based on the terrain. This means they have a basic map, with no textures, or buildings, or anything. Imagine a transparent desert. They then texture the terrain with respect to the planet type.
This means they can have the same basic terrain for a temperate, ice, desert, etc planet. They then add in the buildings to certain building slots, meaning the map can look and play radically different each time.
This will mean that though there are 3,000 planets at launch (no source for that - approx number of temperate planets in EVE), they plan to have something like 10-20 sectors on each planet, each being 5km x 5km, so there's a huge area to cover on each planet.
That would roughly equate to, on the low side, about 750,000 square kilometers to cover. Now, if all the terrain is the same (or at least similar), you can cut it down to one sector on one planet, which means just 25 square km. The maps aren't that big yet, but it's coming soon.

That appears to be a massive undertaking, yet you make it sound simple, which if it is SIMPLE, then maybe CCP can generate a handful more new maps for us to test.
I hope that is what happens in August with the new build--that we get to see this fancy map generator in use--If not, and we are still playing the same few maps as we already have, then i really doubt a Final release in 2012. |

also if they add too many maps the numbers for the areas will be small and not as productive and we just need wayyyy more people for it |

There's still more than a week until August, which is plenty of time for a new build to show up, and the announcement in August that just happens to coincide with some new gear being unlocked could easily be for EVE, and not actually DUST-related other than the beta bonuses being given to us that day. |

Well I needed an excuse to play the gw2 beta. Really was expecting at least a new *old* ambush map. But really its the off week do we get birthing but the right to play on the servers. Gw2 only brings up servers once a month for this reason, then they slam the beta forums shut after a weak so no one can whine about nerfs and changes to an unfinished game.
Maybe dust should only open once a month so you kids will stop whining. |

It's a beta so we get what we get. I'm just really burnt out on Plateau. I've been waiting all week to play but I couldn't stand more than one match before I had to stop.
August is almost here anyway. Hopefully they release something in early August rather than late August. |

The maps are procedurally created and as such the numbers are going to be crazy and maps will not be balanced, and nor should they. Home field advantages and such. The world of New Eden is not fair. What you should really be wanting and asking for is all the different complexes that players will be able to put in the said maps. These complexes will change the balance of the game far more than any random terrain. And the ability to drop certain installations onto the maps where we want will add a huge different to the maps.
Even on the same map, once we get the ability to choose what buildings and turret structures to scatter around the map, the battles will become vastly different each time you play, same map or not. You will not be board on the same map then, as you will be trying to master the defense and assault placement of all the complex moving parts of placing buildings. |

um, no.
first of all, there isnt a pure infantry map...at least not that has been announced. if anything, the hostile planets will be vehicles only. Why would a corp paying for defense of planets gimp their own defense by not funding vehicles? |

All maps, at release, will be (I believe) 5km x 5km in size. Have fun walking that 5km without dropships, tanks, LAV's etc.
In short, CCP wants to make this as large a scale as possible, so vehicles are absolutely necessary. You're fighting over a PLANET! |

Technically there are five maps.
- Biomass.
- Communications (old).
- Communications (new, different hills surrounding map making significant changes to sniper and vehicular combat).
- Steppe Plains (or whatever the new one is called).
- Craterlake (what used to be the linkup for the old skirmish modes back when we had Defense Relays).

Oh and on ambush, stay indoors with a group, vehicles can't kill you and you are in a great defensive position when their infantry comes. |

Because I meant to say Were not Are an/or could have worded things differently ^^ It was a response to someone earlier saying we only have tested three, when we have actually tested five.
EDIT: I suppose there are still five maps, just only two are in rotation ^^ |
