While on the battlefield, effective communication with your team is crucial to forming any type of strategy or success. Currently, a problem with this is that text speakers have a disadvantage in communicating with the rest of the team. One must stop to pull up a screen in the NEOCOM, navigate to their squad, and then send a message. This is time consuming, and will most likely warrant you constant death.
I had an idea in where a "Quick Chat" prompt could be opened up immediately by pressing the Left D-Pad, immediately giving you access to the virtual keyboard to type your message to members of your squad. In addition, messages you type should appear on the game screen followed by your player name, and displayed to all members of the team along with the NEOCOM. This way, all players can simultaneously see and read what is being typed without stopping to check the NEOCOM each time.
Since typing via the virtual keyboard is time consuming in itself, a set of basic messages or commands could be selected via another prompt for fast communication. These would be general commands such as: - "Hello" - "Get to point (X) " - "Enemies ahead" - "Help!"
- This command prompt could be brought up by pressing and holding the SELECT button. Simply pressing SELECT would bring you to the NEOCOM chat as normal.
- The messages could possibly be displayed underneath the kill log/messages, or marginally above the right side of the player HUD for clear visibility. |

I may have a mic, but conveying information via basic speech bits has been fun since TF2, and I don't really see anything against it. |

Yes. As an old World of Tanks player, I was very disappointed to see no quick-commands. I understand people are expecting everyone to have a mic, but this is not possible and adding some short messages is absolutely crucial to let people communicate without dying while typing a single word. |

I, too, agree there is a disadvantage to those who either:
1: Perhaps do not have a headset.
2: Perhaps are playing at a time when talking loudly (in the middle of the night) would not be the best option in one's household (especially with children asleep...sigh)
3: Perhaps someone who is all or partially speach-impaired... whom would be at a disadvantage (I work A/V tech which requires us to always think of the "what ifs" in terms of ADA compliancies in everything we do.) *For those of you unaware: ADA = The Americans with Disabilities Act.
MY SUGGESTION ON THIS IS TAKEN DIRECTLY FROM MILITARY EXPERIENCE:
It might be best to solve this communication gap by establishing the option for both squad leader(s) and members to be able to see a hand signal or symbol (simplified, obviously, for the game) that can be selected quicker than opening up any typing interface...
This could be perhaps a handful of signals that appear visually to all members (or targetted to specific members) that would be something "roughly based on" typical "Arm-and-Hand Signals for Ground Forces" - a symbology which is used in over 80% military ground operations when speach is either impossible to understand or would be unwanted during a covert ambush.
An example would be from the U.S. Army Field Manual - (21-60) Visual Signs: ... "Arm-and-Hand Signals for Ground Forces"
Somehow simplifying/future-modernizing an implementation of some of the essential and basic symbols would help keep typing time down and allow better communication between everyone, regardless or whether they are shouting over a microphone, typing franticly, or simply feeling lost (and essentially not part of the game)...

Go buy a mic. Amazon has BT mics for PS3 for $10. Stop being cheap.

@Jared. Software companies do not have to adhere to ADA rules. I have a mic. Stop being assumptive.
I can't be the only one who has another person in the house who sleeps earlier for work than me... I can't be the only one who might have a kid or two sleeping while I'm trying to play...
And you're right: ADA rules don't need to apply. I was giving MY feedback and using some examples as to why some people may have OTHER reasons why they don't have a mic and rely on keyboard only.
The original post mentioned the frustration of dealing with keyboard usage, so I was giving a possible third solution.
This is feedback, after all. |

That's cold man. Having to be thoughtful and just being thoughtful for humanity's sake are two separate things. Plus 10 USD headsets are cheap for a reason: low quality, high background interference, and just all around bad. Any game which needs an extra accessory beyond a controller is not going to appeal to the pick-up-and-play F2P mindset.
Anyway, I think the signals idea Jared fielded would be wonderful, as many games with speech chat have proxy chat that can be heard by nearby enemies. As the chat system is in it's infancy, we don't know if this will be in the final product, but the signals in and of themselves would be useful as a small popup in the corner where the old 'fall back' message was, and maybe a temporary UI blip. |

So expand the squad commanders quick wheel for non squad leaders? I could get behind that, there's been many a time where I would have liked to have been able to toss out a "fall back" to the guy who didn't realize there was a tank around the corner.
Although most (I'm hella guilty about this too) is that everyone needs to start working as a squad. Combine that with a squad commander actually commanding (calling out attack/defend/etc) and you'd be pretty devastating. |

In the few games where a squad commander has actually been giving orders, we've typically had half the squad doing as ordered, and the rest sort of scattering and doing whatever.
Oddly, I think it works BETTER that way. 6 per squad seems like slightly more than we should have. I'd prefer 3 squads of 4, to be honest. Or 4 squads of 3.
Maybe there will be a way for players to alter squad sizes? |

Amazon's online. Too lazy to even go to a website?

These people wont make any difference to the game nor will you see these people a lot.

Talking quietly enough not to disturb a person in the next room over from you? Not going to work over the mic for most people you're talking to. They either won't hear or won't understand half (or more) of what you're saying.
If you can't figure that out, you're either the child in your household or you've never had to learn to respect other people. |

Ever think of using the mic volume adjuster? It does wonders for such situations. |

This is an excellent idea. I can think of several alternative ways -- alone or in combination -- to implement it. I'm sure there are others. When the player presses a key / button they get a signal list. When they pick one...
- the minimaps of their team show a transparent, colored field-of-view overlay of the signaling player with a symbol for the chosen hand signal in the cone.
- a separate window briefly pops up for their teammates showing the signaling player's character from the back with an over-the-shoulder view making the hand signal
- the player's character makes the hand signal
- there is an audible alert combined with a brief color change of the character's symbol on the minimap.
Or some combination of the above.

2 things, not saying to add this, just saying it to spark some ideas:
bf2 had the commo rose to deal with this problem:
Commo rose messages On foot:
Spotted
Go,Go,Go Follow Me
Roger That Negative Thank You Sorry
Need Pickup Need Ammo Need Medic Need Back-up
In vehicle:
Get In replaces Need Pickup Need Repair replaces Need Medic Bail Out replaces Follow Me
another option might be to add some voice recorded audio , wich say things like "rally point set" , or "attack this objective" after the squad leader has set them on the map, so people are more aware of whats going on around them without mics |

+1 on the hand signals idea, though words/ symbols popping up on top of the squad leader will propbably be more simpler than learning the hand signals.
Or...
Squad leader can post locations of target, and maybe in the future a commander can oversee the map and call targets and "laze" them for ground troops to see on the map easier. For those like me who like using the dropships and getting the gunner to see what I see via tagging system, or just having my view in the general direction helps the tag communicate to the gunner, like wearing tagging glasses for the squad. If one sees, everyones sees the tag. Something along the lines of dustance of the target that person A communicated that he saw can be relayed to person B in a small minimap or something with a tag like in fleet fights. Makes primary'ing easier.
For those that do have mics though, there should be a volume control for each of their mic (input n their end and ouput control on the listener's) - sometimes you dont need to hear that guy with the wife aggro or the kid thats yelling.
But to get back to communicating, hand signals will be hard to understand atm since the draw distance for us is short. |

The issue at play here really is that the PlayStation 3 doesn't come with a Microphone. Add to that that the voice chat system on the PlayStation 3 is not what I'd call "intuative" to use ... it ends up being far too much hassle to be worth it (imo)
I think some basic command that are on a quick menu (like how you select the guns) would be a great addition to the game. Mind would also say, while I'm sure alot of you are awesome ppl and all - the only guys I've heard talking so far are kinda annoying pricks. So doesn't exactly make me want to get a Mic to talk to these people.
Right now I'm being reminded of what voice chat was like in the early days of Halo 2. I'm in a way dreading the numbers of kids or drunk / stoned college students who think they're funny or the greatest thing to FPS games since Carmack brought us Wolf 3D.
Any tools that allow me to communicate with these people without actually having to talk to them will likely earn the dev team some free alcohol c/o my wallet at the next fanfest. |
