Right i played DUST 514 for a couple hours late last night, and found that out of the 5 classes, the sniper rifke was the hardest weapon to use, so i GAVE UP using it.
1) The reticle needs to be changed, from a dot, what sniper rifle uses a dot sight?? 2) The eniper needs atleast 2 levels of zoom, currently as far as i have tried it only has 1 level of zoom. 3) The sight is basically the smae as the assualt rifle scope. 4) The sway, ohh the sway, now i was standing still with the sniper, i was pressing various butttons, to see if i could hold my breath or something, or by crouching, but the sniper is useless at long ranges, TOO MUCH SWAY. 5) The sniper rifle sight in some games goes red when the sight is over the enemy, though i fear this addition may make sniping too easy.
Apart from the above, so far even at this stage the game seems to run smooth, whether this stays true when we get to open beta is another question.
AS a side note: I couldnt create my own suite either or edit current suites, is the locked throughout the whole of the closed beta process??
Kind Regards

4. Crouch and hold still for a bit. Obvious solution. If you panic like a rabbit bouncing back and forth between targets, it wobbles around to disrupt hyperactive gunners. Slow down. 5. Already does this.

sigh....this isnt COD.....
first of all, level up your sniping skills to increase damage and reduce sway. This will also allow for the use of better sniper rifles.
second, this is still in testing. we dont know and cant know yet whay CCP has planned for the scout class and snipers as this is all still being built. More models for guns and scopes will probably be included with later builds, but gameplay mechanic balancing and stress testing trump these cosmetic issues.
and lastly, didnt you forget to complain about not being able to no scope?
edit: sorry for my tone of voice...tired of these COD kiddies coming in and complaining that Dust isnt a COD copy from day one. kinda sounded like it for a sec. |

Thanks for the info gallas, i only played it for 2 hours, so didnt take in every detail, but instantly found out that sniping was difficult, the sniper feels like it needs another zoom level too it, as people with assault rifles were doing more damage too me at long range, than i was too them, due too them just spraying in my general direction.
Lurch: You cant use skills in the beta, i tried last night, it all seems to be locked??, so how do i know how much of an affect these skills will have on my gun, if i cant train up??
EDIT2: ok if this is stress testing phase, then fair play, i just pointed out this issue, for future versions. If this is solely for stress testing, then the game i was playing that had 16 or 24 in yesterday felt smooth, so did the ambush game, but i spent more time laughing in that than playing, watching the burst cannon shuttle fly around and mow everyone down, people were also using it like a japanese fighter plane, kamikazing it into enemy players. |

Skills have level tiers, you can't use certain weapons or skills till you have the lower-ranked skills to use them..
for example..what I can think off the top of my head. Vehicle control 5 comes before Heavy Vehicles 1, so if you want to use a tank, you first have to get Vehicles to 5, then HAV of choice to 1, and only then can you use the regular tank shells from the market, til you get to 4 or 5 HAV
If you go into your Character sheet, there should be a list of skills there. If you press R1, it should change to "Available skills" and show you what you can buy and use right now.
If you're looking for a particular skill you can search on the market for it... but you must know it's prerequisites for use, I believe its the Triangle button, then it brings up an info screen that has stats and lore of the weapon/skill book, but one of those should be required skills to use it. |

you have to be patient on the Sniper class. As far as sway, the first time I tried it, I too noticed it. But for some reason, something told me - just wait a couple seconds, then the sway stopped and it was much easier. You also have to unlock higher level skills.
http://dust.ccpgamescdn.com/Dust514/client-text/DUSTmanual.html
That link is for the game manual. hopefully it will help explain some things. Remember though that this is a beta and still a WiP (which they display prominently in the game). Suggestions are always better than complaining |

The dot is my preferred crosshair of choice in any FPS game I play. So I'd have to say the rifle scope is fine. Plus, I've seen many games with rifle scopes with only a dot in the center. Since bullets don't drop in this game, there's no real sense in adding any measurements to the lens of the scope. A dot is perfect and obstructs your view as little as possible.
As far as the zoom goes, I'd have to agree, but I'll settle with one zoom. At least that way I get used to it always being that one level of zoom. I saw somebody mention something about being surprised the OP didn't say anything about being able to no-scope. While, technically it isn't no-scoping, if you're good enough, you CAN get an enemy in the center of your screen, zoom in with your scope and immediately after zooming in, fire your weapon and then release L1 to zoom out. If done right, you'll zoom in really fast and shoot the enemy and then zoom out. It can be very effective at close range. You can kill at least 50% of the enemies with just 1 hit if your skilled and equipped right.
The swaying isn't that bad, either. Crouch and ADS and just sit still for like 2 seconds and you will notice that your scope sway GOES AWAY ENTIRELY. Of course, when you move or shoot, your scope will sway. It's kind of like the laws of nature, you see. The birds and the bees. That sort of thing. Ya can't win 'em all, Chuck. I don't do it often but I have sniped people while moving/standing. It isn't exactly easy but Sniper Rifle Proficiency helps a little bit.
In any case, in my opinion, the sniper is by far the best class of guns. Haven't used a Forge Gun yet, though, so I can't really compare them to one of those. |

No problems with the sniper rifle here. I lack gun game, so I learned to use the sniper rifle. I have worked my way up to a proto suit, proto sniper rifle, and 3 10% damage mods...I'm maxed for damage with current build, should be doing somewhere around 365 per shot, if my calculations are correct. I average 10 to 15 kills in a match, although I have the occasional bad match (mostly when people are smart enough to figure out how to counter me...I really need my forge gun buddy to be able to group up with me to keep the dropships off of me). My best round yet has been somewhere around 25/4 or something like that. I'm certainly not up to par with some of the really top notch players, but I'm usually in the top 3 or 4 in my matches. And this is from someone who had to learn all of this either by myself or by watching what the other snipers did to succeed. Someone who already has some FPS skills, even if they don't translate perfectly to DUST, should be able to do even better than I have. |

i have my sniper skills almost completely maxed out (working on level 5 proficiency right now). I agree with what this guy is saying on some points. The sway is pretty bad, but it does get a little better when you upgrade the proficiency skills. ZOOM is huge problem that needs to be addressed. Yes I know this is a beta, but the whole point is to test things out and give feedback. That's what we're doing here. If you're not a dedicated sniper then don't tell those of us who are trying to give some feedback how wrong we are for giving our opinions.

1) This is a preference thing, so I won't comment on this, as there is no right or wrong answer. 2) Also boils down to preference, although would be nice to have. 3) I don't have an issue with this. 4) As others have mentioned, if you crouch (press triangle, your crouch indicator is on the left side of the inside of your health indicator) and wait for a second, the sway stops. Move your character, fire, or move your gun too quick and the sway will start again. 5) Too many people don't seem to notice this, but there is a friend or foe indicator on the reticle. The dot does turn red when it is sighted on an enemy. It stays blue, or turns green, when on a team/squad-mate. |

You can buy new suits in the market, milita ones are really cheap and are unlimited liscenced issue so no need to replace lost suits.
Military grade hardware however is limit issue and have to buy a new suit every time so stock up to a decent number oh say 10-25 depends how often you die if your team is getting really pounded go ahead and go back to using milita if its a lost cause in your mindset save some isk. Once you get a suit, some modules and some weapons goto your fitting option in neocom and dropsuit fitting scroll to bottom and then put one together.
Suits have Power Grid and CPU some modules consume more than others so be careful how you load balance your loadout. Then slots. H for heavy weapons, L for Light weapons, S for side arm. Triad for grenade, Gear Circle for Equipment, 1 Dash is low slots usually have deep level stuff such as armor and bionics and computer/reactor upgrades most of these are grid intensive, two dashes are high slot and are usually stuff towards the outside such as shields and sensors. As for weapon slots you can down grade for example you can place a scrambler pistol in your heavy slot. but not a HMG in your sidearms slot.
View market place for all possible skill books read each items description, and when you want to see what skills you can train use available skills on the skill sheet, from here you can inject any previous bought skill book or buy one and then inject it without having to load up the market.
If you are facing an error after meeting the above requirements then restart the client its a known issue that sometiems scotty the station manager would accidently vent your entire inventory into space, at least insurance covers such accidents. |

I've sniped since the build before this and the sway has never been an issue, what is an issue though is the minute movements that you have to coax from the "nipple" to get the dot align just right.
I've used a controller borrowed from a friend of mine which is rather loose as far "button feel" goes and I have no problems hitting targets standing still, moving targets however ... Now my new controller being new is stiff as hell and resists all the way so hitting on someone standing still is a trial in patience but for some strange reason I now hit running targets better so go figure.
So just saying that controller feel has as much to do with sniping as is adjusting sensitivity until you get it just right for muscle memory while keeping turning speed bearable.
Also when sniping try to avoid "sniper perches" unless you like changing life for life when sniping. |

Aside from the fact that Dust has this feature anyway, I don't understand why this would make sniping too easy. I mean, a sitting duck is a sitting duck, plain and simple. If a target is moving, then you won't be aiming at the target for your crosshair to be turning red anyway. Which is the case like 80% of the time.
carl von oppenheimer wrote:Also when sniping try to avoid "sniper perches" unless you like changing life for life when sniping.
I go for sniping perches often. It's where I'm most effective. The key is to keep out of sight unless you're taking a shot at somebody. I often scope out other snipers long before they find me as well. Also, if you're spotted or start taking shots at an enemy and lose sight of them, it's best that you pack up camp and hit the ol' dusty trail. If you catch my meaning. |

All I have to say is..... The sniper is perfect from my knowledge and use of it. Most games sniping is pretty annoying because it's generally easy and one hit kills. I like how it's hard to aim and I like how it's not to over-powered but yet it's still effective but Challenging to use.
CCP to me personally did one of the best balancing jobs on the sniper rifle I have seen. I love it.... |

They are probably using Tier 2 (forget the tier name) or Tier 3 (Prototype) Assault Rifles, while you are using a Tier 0 (Militia) Sniper Rifle. The Militia gear just... sucks. Everyone gets an unlimited supply of those first four drops suits, and they really aren't much good. You're better off using the 50k ISK you're issued at character creation to build a Tier 1 drop suit. It's still gonna be difficult to do much with that, but easier than the Militia gear. I'm using a Tier 2 Breach Assault Rifle, and I'm having trouble doing much damage with that. Of course, I suck with the DS3 so that is a big factor in my struggles... Time to get a shotgun! |

It uses a system very similiar to Planetside (if anyone has played it).....
You must wait a couple seconds once you stop moving for your crosshair to almost compeltely stop moving in order to make a precision shot. Think it is a counter to the running and gunning (no scoping) used in a lot of games no days to get instant kills with the sniper rifle (Not for or againest it, just stating why I think they put it in) |
