I was pretty shocked by the fact that the Large Missile Turret has such a ridiculous amount of recoil on a HAV when compared to a Railgun or a Blaster. It's not only a huge pain in the butt, it's also completely unrealistic.
It's a Missile launcher...it doesn't have recoil, it fires self propelled munitions, all the force of firing comes from the projectile itself not the launcher. Conversely the Railgun should have an immense amount of recoil considering it's imparting all the force into the projectile and accelerating it to relativistic velocities. The Blaster should fall somewhere in the middle of the two since it fires smaller rounds than the Railgun and at slower velocity, but at a faster rate.
I haven't tried the Large Missile Turret on a Marauder yet, but given the frequency that I've been wrecked by them I'm guessing the recoil is less when equipped on a more advanced hull.
I would also like to mention, Missiles are GUIDED projectiles. The Swarm Launcher fires missiles...the small and large Missile turrets actually fire Rockets...perhaps a name change is in order...or better yet...being able to Lock a target with a turret? |

And the railgun does have a bit of recoil, enough to make the (likely very heavy) vehicle jump up a little with each shot, which will throw off any passenger turrets if they fire around the same time following the main gun. It's not as much as the missiles, but, I'm pretty sure that's acknowledged to be a bug.
I can confirm that this is NOT true....the very first time I ever fired my Large Missile Turret I was zoomed in on a distant target and after firing the turret my tank was thrown backwards and flipped on its side. When it righted itself I was facing nearly 120 degrees to the right of where it'd been previously positioned....not the turret mind you...the tank was facing the wrong way... |

I believe the difference is in their construction somewhere but I am not certain it could also be simply that random Joe chose to give said weapon its name.
I suppose that's a valid point. Perhaps I'm missing something about the nomenclature. Let's look it up!
Answers.com says: A missile is also a rocket, the difference is that it hold explosive for mass destruction. a rocket is just use to propelling vehicle like in satellites etc. missiles are self guided by the help of inertial navigation system.
Yahoo Answers says: In a military context, a rocket is not guided, a missile is.
But let's go to the experts now: The Range Employees at the White Sands Missile Range operated by the US Army usually simplify the discussion by saying a missile has a guidance system or brain to get it to its destination and a rocket just goes where it is initially pointed.
So the general consensus seems to be that you Aim a Rocket, but you designate a Target for a Missile.
So by military terms, the Swarm Launcher fires a group of Missiles, but the Missile Turrets are firing Rockets.
I believe some renaming or some new features for Missile turrets are in order :) |

I am quite well aware of the generalizations that are made but the fact is that the terms are very often used interchangeably and the game is still in development options for guided missile may yet be added to the tanks.
There are obviously exceptions to every generalization. I'm not saying that rockets 'can't' be guided or that missiles 'must' be, but that in the most general use of the terms and the common military vernacular they are.
Obviously the game is still in development and changes are bound to be made and features added, that's why I'm bringing this up now instead of after release.
In EVE the smallest Missile weapon system there is is the Rocket Launcher. It stands to reason that the smallest weapons used in ship to ship space combat may be the largest weapons available for vehicle combat in an atmosphere or on the ground. |
