Because for $20, you purchased the equivalent of a $20 purchase worth of in-game currency (aurum), and got several other items on top of that. All of which will be credited to your account upon the release of the final game. Beta access was also included.
Nobody said you had to purchase it, and if you wanted beta access for free, you could have waited until they offered access for free, or signed up on the beta registration site. |

CCP is working to make all items (of their respective classes: standard, advanced, Aurum-bought, etc.) equal. They have openly stated that there will not be a potential for players to use Aurum to gain an unfair advantage over those who worked to purchase items with ISK and built up their skills over time.
Also, if you had attended the E3 even in Home, you could have unlocked a chance to win a free beta code in the Dust514 Home space. Don't mean to go off topic, but I'm new to PS3 - you can watch E3 in home?!
Yep, they've been setting up a virtual PlayStation E3 booth there at least the past couple years. That's where I got my Dust key. I think they might also stream the Sony press conference there too. |

I've been a PS+ member since day 1, I know how it works. You're not guaranteed access into every beta. This is no different. There were ways to get in free (and still are). |
