I was just reading a topic in the general forum about some individuals wanting more requirements for pilots in order to drive HAVs and Dropships. I've got a friend who is already planning on specializing in piloting, and I know I'm going to be spending a lot of time in the gunner position of a ship. I would like to see some skills which would increase our synergy together.
I know people would be up in arms if there were a skill requirement to use any vehicle turret whatsoever, but what if we had some skills which increases their efficiency? Blaster turret skills which decrease heat buildup, rocket turret skills which increase splash radius, railgun turrets which decrease charge time, etc?
The point of these skills would be to shift some of the burden to passengers. To clarify: the passenger skills would only affect the turret that passenger is currently using. Right now, pilots are the ones training up a dozen different skills just to outfit a tank, in addition to purchasing all the components to piece it together and taking the time between matches up update their gear! When I listen to my pilot talk about all the work he does refitting his tank, my head starts to spin. I wish I could help him improve his efficiency, but there is literally nothing I can do. Even though I spend 95% of some matches in his front turret, I can't give back anything to the person offering me safe haven from the countless general infantry who have suffered explosive death at our hands.
Sorry, those we've exploded.
Passenger skills would distribute the pilot's burden and say "Ok, here's a way to make your tank even better without having to buy anything new or train up anything". Suddenly I am able to do something to give back to the person who put a tank together!
As a side effect, this might trim down on tank spam. If we had players who leveled up turret skills, they might be more willing to climb into someone else's tank rather than bringing down a tank of their own. We'd see more "Player+2" tanks rolling around and less lone-wolf shenanigans.
To summarize:
- I want skills that increase the efficiency of the turret you are currently using
- There will be different skills for different turret types
- If the pilot has these skills leveled, it will do nothing for the tank he is piloting
- If this pilot then climbs into someone else's tank, the skills will take effect
- Lacking these skills will not penalize players. Turrets won't become less efficient if used by unskilled passengers.
Would this be an effective way to give back to those pilots who shell out for vehicles?

First point completely agree 100%!
Second point... Dropship's are supposed to be our Blackhawk's aren't they? These aren't assault choppers, so where's are attack vehicles of the air? This brings up two valid points, missile damage to the sides of Dropship should transfer 100% of their splash to turret passengers... These are once again not assault craft manning the gun should be a dangerous proposition, I know buddies in Iraq who've taken a few rounds manning the guns, and we've lost lots more of these then our Gunships for damn certain because they play a vulnerable role...
My point? Give Dropship's a CRAP load more utility, and go ahead and maintain their assault capabilities, but punish those turret positions with some missile damage, not just the vehicle owner... And make some Gunships for the purely offensive air duos of the game. An equivalent of jets would be nice also, but still not sure that would be reasonable given the 'current' scale of the maps. IT should be something someone can specialize into reliably. |

Dropship gunners are vulnerable; I don't know about rocket splash, but I've sniped quite a few of them. I do agree though that splash damage should be taken into consideration.
There will be jets of sorts; Atli demos them in the 2009 fanfest Dust section. |

I like the idea of passenger skills a lot. Another direction for these skills could be in defensive additions. Say a skill that allows you to transfer a percent of your shields into the vehicles shields. It could be called like vehicle shield interfacing or something. There could even be skills like this for specific vehicles. As a career gunner you could then specialize in becoming for instance a dropship gunner, where your skills would significantly increase effectiveness in a dropship versus when you are in a tank. |

Could possibly add in some Logistics skills as well, something to have the man in the turret do internal repairs or shield boosting by rerouting the power from his gun, so he's either increasing the DPS or the tank. Probably ought to make it either an expensive set of skills or a weaker healing than a Repair Tool, however, as there should always be more benefit for being the guy on the outside risking himself for repairs as opposed to the passenger. |
