I was just reading a topic in the general forum about some individuals wanting more requirements for pilots in order to drive HAVs and Dropships. I've got a friend who is already planning on specializing in piloting, and I know I'm going to be spending a lot of time in the gunner position of a ship. I would like to see some skills which would increase our synergy together.
I know people would be up in arms if there were a skill requirement to use any vehicle turret whatsoever, but what if we had some skills which increases their efficiency? Blaster turret skills which decrease heat buildup, rocket turret skills which increase splash radius, railgun turrets which decrease charge time, etc?
The point of these skills would be to shift some of the burden to passengers. To clarify: the passenger skills would only affect the turret that passenger is currently using. Right now, pilots are the ones training up a dozen different skills just to outfit a tank, in addition to purchasing all the components to piece it together and taking the time between matches up update their gear! When I listen to my pilot talk about all the work he does refitting his tank, my head starts to spin. I wish I could help him improve his efficiency, but there is literally nothing I can do. Even though I spend 95% of some matches in his front turret, I can't give back anything to the person offering me safe haven from the countless general infantry who have suffered explosive death at our hands.
Sorry, those we've exploded.
Passenger skills would distribute the pilot's burden and say "Ok, here's a way to make your tank even better without having to buy anything new or train up anything". Suddenly I am able to do something to give back to the person who put a tank together!
As a side effect, this might trim down on tank spam. If we had players who leveled up turret skills, they might be more willing to climb into someone else's tank rather than bringing down a tank of their own. We'd see more "Player+2" tanks rolling around and less lone-wolf shenanigans.
To summarize:
- I want skills that increase the efficiency of the turret you are currently using
- There will be different skills for different turret types
- If the pilot has these skills leveled, it will do nothing for the tank he is piloting
- If this pilot then climbs into someone else's tank, the skills will take effect
- Lacking these skills will not penalize players. Turrets won't become less efficient if used by unskilled passengers.
Would this be an effective way to give back to those pilots who shell out for vehicles?
