Too laggy, both graphically and by internet. Maybe if they optimized their game so I can run it at a stable 60fps with a GTX950, I would actually consider playing it again.

Not a new thing really. One of the older Battlefield titles had an area strike option (can't remember if mortar or air strike) that you could use. The thing that made it different in DUST is that it could be provided by other (EVE) players.

yea. there was plenty of things that ccp could of blab about but 99% of the hype for this game was the "orbital strikes". orbital strikes kinda killed this game in a way. there was so many unique things this game did for an fps but everyone was hyped about the "sandbox world" and when it didn't deliver the hype for it died. |

orbital strikes are just a really fancy way of bombing ****. so nothing new at all. dust 514 just added dubstep to it and made pewpew ships bomb us instead. and called it orbital strikes. wow. new and original. |

I can tell you right now 950 is good enough for modern gaming. these people are just being picky because your not using something like 1070. Planetside two is unoptimized to ****. if there is a great deal of players on a map, usually perfomance takes a huge hit. I am using a **** old 770, runs the game fine. only when there is like 99+ player on the map it becomes a problem. and i guarantee you when that happens, people with 1080 ti and i9's are lagging too because the lag isnt client side...
If you want to see if your computer can handle an upgrade, just put in your computer parts in https://pcpartpicker.com/ , usually it will tell you (and why) if it is compatible. Is your computer pre built or did you build the system? i gotta know if you have 0 experience with pc building. |

Only thing it didn't come with is the case fan, which I bought and installed without problems.
An expensive, high quality fan... Corsair ML120 Pro, Magnetic Levitation technology, can be completely unhearable at 400 RPM, or super cooling at 2400RPM, it rocks.
Maybe I went into too much detail about that... I'm just bragging about it at this point xD
One bit I forgot to mention - 950 is good enough as you said. I can run ETS2 at 60 FPS 1080p upscaled to 150% on the highest settings, and World of Tanks at the same resolution (although not upscaled) on the highest settings, and the fps only drops when there's lots of foliage around, so I just turned down the foliage quality to medium and it's all good.

Yeah so I put all the parts on there and my PSU nor the motherboard can't fit the 1080 Ti, here's the quotes from the site:
- 2 additional PCI-Express pcie8-pin power connectors are needed.
- Thermaltake - Litepower 350W 80+ Certified ATX Power Supply may not provide sufficient wattage. The estimated part list maximum power draw is 398W.
rip xD
I tried this instead - Asus - GeForce GTX 1060 6GB 6GB Dual Video Card
That fits. Still below 300W power usage, within the 350W PSU I have, and it fits onto the motherboard.

I still use the one I bought from years ago.
If it doesn't fit on the board, chances are you have an old mobo. I have a Maximus IX Hero for sale, if you are interested in buying one. Brand new, never taken out of the box
1060 is enough for modern gaming, but not for extreme graphics. You can get stable 60 fps @1080p if you get one with decent clocks. You can even try to OC it, but that'll depend on the silicon lottery.

Firstly, with a prebuilt, he is probably not running on high or above settings. and in some games the difference between low and ultra tends to be more negligible nowadays. not worth running past medium, even in a high end setup, because you will loose alot of fps for 0 improvement.
Secondly, a quick check on youtube shows that the GTX 950 is capable of running modern games released this year at an more than acceptable framerate. though i'm under the impression that you're the kind of person that would say a game is unplayable if you have even one frame under 120 hz in ultra.
You mention dark souls. well here you go. took like 2 seconds
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NH-VBoACE0
it runs ~45 Hz, on 1080p, at maximum settings. no 60 Hz, but more than acceptable. However, if this was lowered to a more reasonable medium settings, he would probably hit 60 hz easily.
Resident evil 7
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImKgIwrLV4I
With tweaks that are clearly visible, this guy managed to get on average ~90 Hz at 1080p from what I am seeing in the video. this game came out in early 2017.
Of course, this isn't on Ultra. but due to the way modern games are made, these settings are not disgusting. they are more than acceptable to most people, unless you are trying to have a epeen contest.
Prey
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFeBIONPROw
Again, tweaked settings on 1080p, around ~60-70 Hz. More than acceptable quality of graphics.
WatchDogs 2
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6HnLr_5_kA
To show i am not biased, here is a game that is running around ~30hz. 30hz may be acceptable for some, and more so if said person is using a pre build with a four year old gpu that was bottom tier when it came out. but i suspect this is worst case scenario, since ubisoft is known to not have very good optimization.
Witcher 3
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XL0Vwukx_6Q
I know this is an old game, but this game is known to be pretty graphically intensive. again, it's unnecessarily running on High, and it is getting around ~45 Hz.
Destiny 2
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sqEXBY_aEw
Probably one of the newest games released right now, and it's getting ~60 hz
I could go on and on, but we would be here all day.
Don't get me wrong, It is a bottom tier graphics card, and I do recommend him upgrading at some point, but to say it can't handle modern gaming is just ignorant.

the GTX 1050 is not worth purchasing to replace GTX 950 since it is also bottom tier graphics card. You can currently find GTX 1060 on amazon and newegg for ~220 USD. Not that bad. It would be more than worth it.

If you are referring to "1080 ti and i9's" comment, of course, It was meant as a joke and exaggeration. buying a highly multithreaded cpu ment for production work that can easily run into four digit price tag for gaming is extremely stupid and obvious to all but the most novice PC builders. and no one is buying prebuilts with i9's in it just for gaming, unless they are very novice.

I am a total idiot.
I forgot to mention power supplies have a certain efficiency. it only goes a certain percentage of its wattage. look here
http://www.extremetech.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/80plus.jpg
350 * 0.80 = 280 W, under 100% load. I do not know if that is still enough, though it would help if you linked your pcpartpicker build so I can make sure.
it may be in your best interest to get this
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N9X3F8F/?tag=pcpapi-20
It is 80+ Bronze (protip: don't buy a PSU without 80+ rating, chinese crap will be at lower efficiency than 80%), and it is made by a brand name. It is 30 usd, which is far less than what your typical smug ego fueled pcmasterrace would suggest, and its not some crap from china. (or at least not cheap made crap from china) it should satisfy you for the next century when they decide to retire the ATX form factor, unless you plan on changing form factors or decide to delve in $600 GPU or sli setups.
and yes, that adds 30 USD to your upgrade, but honestly, It would probably be worth it for the performance gains you would get upgrading to the GTX 1060, and also more worth it if you plan on upgrading your cpu at some point. |

If you're going to game at medium, might as well buy a console, and the games are probably going to be better optimized since all consoles are the same. High-ultra should be the what one aims for if they can afford it, with a few settings here and there up for debate.

Define "acceptable FPS". 60 (give or take 5) frames is my minimum because that's what I'm used to nowadays. Yes, a 950 can run gana from this year, but not really up to my personal standards.
I believe what I wrote already answered the DS3 bit. 45 is a no-no for me. Yeah, I played the DLC and enjoyed it, but immersion was ruined when the frames dipped.

All those examples are meh, except for Destiny 2. Having played it with a low-tier rig, I'm surprised on how well this game runs. Although the gameplay is not my thing (didn't like D1 either) I can't deny that it's a good looking game and that it runs very well.
However, to say it can handle modern games is ignorant. Modern games aren't meant to play like playdough.

My two cents, after just having put my first gaming PC together a couple weeks ago.
I made a budget PC, with a Ryzen 3 1200 CPU and GTX 1050 ti.
It being my first PC, I had to do a lot of research with what I wanted and whatnot.
I was agonizing over the GPU, because there was a significant price difference between the 1050 ti, and the 1060 6gb card I really was hoping to get, thanks to the aforementioned currency miners.
One thing that really sold it for me personally, was something that cmdr already brought up, which was framerate given particular settings. After checking out a youtube video by a long time PC gamer asking the same question, as to what you were getting vs what you were giving up, it was pretty clear that with Med/High settings, you could almost double your framerates on lower cards like the 1050 ti while giving up comparatively little. I would replay scenes over and over in his video, and could not see the distinctions between the settings. And the times I did see a difference, it was not necessarily negative, it was just different. While I could afford the 1060 6gb, I didn't see the point on spending more than twice the cost of a 1050 ti for something so negligible.
IMO, while it certainly may be someone's preference to play at the highest settings, it is quite narrow minded to suggest it ignorant modern games wouldn't want to be playable on lower settings on older cards. What company in their right mind would want to limit the number of players they can reach? If playing on the highest graphical settings were a games sole objective, companies would never port to consoles, and would solely focus on high end PC games.
In fact, the GeForce Experience is designed just for optimizing frame rates and settings. Why would a GPU maker want to do that if they thought that people should only enjoy games at the ultra settings? Why would they want people to hold on to GPUs longer? It seems to me they understand that PC gaming is more than just for the elitists, despite what the #PCMasterRace thinks.

Damn, old post much?
Almost forgot we had this conversation about what a 2gb GTX950 can handle...
I'm sticking to it, it can run anything well enough at 1080p60 (my TV's limit) on high settings, not necessarily ultra...really, if I want an upgrade, I'd invest in a new monitor aswell, or TV...for watching TV too my current monitor/TV is a Hitachi LED Full-HDTV, Japanese and fantastic, no input delay, none, I couldn't have asked for a better screen at that price range (~$240)
I pre-ordered Project CARS 2 today, I'll see how that runs on my setup next week, racing wheel ready

I suggest tweaking the settings yourself if you can. See what's right for you.
Also, yeah, I cracked a few jokes here and there in my post, so people will take it for what they will. However, in my opinion, I just like shinies that can play at max settings. Some games are designed for High, with Ultra and Medium being an afterthought. Keeping up with technology is essential for a PC down the line. When I make recommendations, I try to let people know a few pieces of hardware that have a lot more years in than others for their prices. I don't blindly tell people to get the best of I know that's out of the picture, but I do try to to get them to get the best bang for their buck.
As for companies limiting their playerbases, ultimately, they have to. There comes a point in development where cards are no longer feasible to play a current game because the company won't spend additional payed hours to try and make it work. I wouldn't call that narrow minded, but to each their own :p

As for monitors, there are news of a 4k, 144Hz beast by Acer called the Predator X27, I think. I wants it, and I needs it. It'll probably cost a fortune, though.
