Why were CCP so eager to show off a playable demo of project Nova last year? but a year on and presumably a lot has been done in that time, so why then do they have nothing to show for this year? Very strange if you ask me. |

The demo was damage control last year, now they know there is no damage control other than releasing something worth releasing. I doubt we'll see any meaningful info until the game is basically ready to go.

Very strange if you ask me. I assume it is due to a redesign. That should be easy to assume though as they said the Nova demo was commented as "Not EVE enough". From what I heard, the gun game is solid but everything else is likely going to change. And as CCP Logicloop stayed in Shanghai, I would guess the maps are going to change as well. Time will tell. From my guess, it will be lots and lots of time before we know for sure.

I believe you assumed it right, they probably scrapped the "on-ship CQC fighting" bit and are still working on maps, so they didn't have a playable demo of that ready for this year's FF, that, or they really wanna get it done as quickly as possible so they didn't bother with showing their progress to the public.

From the sound, Nova was still in transition between Shanghai and Iceland @ Fanfest 2017. Furthermore, I think CCP does not want to rush anything as it seems they think rushing is what lead to the problem's CCP had with DUST. That is why I have such doubts about seeing it any time in the next couple years.

The demo wasn't for show, the demo was for feedback.

Actually, Longstride reportedly played a dev version of Nova, where he played on top of a ship. It was also said he reported lots of CQC. Rattati also mentioned that at this point, they believe every suit will have a melee slot.

They are trying to not go and overhype their product. Some games and movies fail because too much is given away prior to the realese so people are left with a feeling that they've airway played/watched the product because of how much they already know about it.

Well it shouldn't be too hard to keep what you had to show in the beta/alpha stage in the game, no?

If they do the people will start their conspiracy theories: "An entire year and they have the same exact demo. It's probably in development Hell! RIP Nova" I didn't mean showing it again at another fanfest, I meant keeping what was shown in a demo, in the final product, so people wouldn't get disappointed if a feature got scrapped.
They should show a new part of the game each time, a different type of map or gamemode alongside the already known features.

I'm going to be wildly optimistic here and engage in shameful fantasizing in full public view. What could go wrong?
It takes a long time to tune fps core mechanics for a shooter, especially for a first-time developer. Sure you can rely on lots of UR4 tools, but if you want smooth gameplay under a the broad range of conditions we could eventually, potentially have in Nova, there's prolly some fundamental design/prototyping/coding that has to go into the process.
Netcode has evolved significantly in recent years, with lots of real-world case studies and analysis out there now, and i'm thinking Shanghai would have spent some serious time looking at that.
What we really want from the past year is a core engine & backend that is modular, extensible, flexible and fully capable of integration with EVE on all levels, or perhaps more realistically a framework and design standard that can take us to that place without drama for future devs.
Remember how f'ed up the tacnet code was, the kludges and workarounds that were required damn near every time the devs attempted to improve or extend gameplay. I will guarantee you Rouge & Rattati still have nightmares about it. That code may be embedded in their psyches forever.
Just a guess but i'm betting our dudes at the top made some kind of unholy viking/gaul blood vow that such a thing would. Never. Happen. Again.
That, in the best of all possible worlds, is what the past year was about, at least in my sad little fantasy life.

Ok , here's my guess. Project Nova started development with a small dev team because more devs were needed for Valkyrie and Gunjack at the time . Recently more devs were freed up from other projects and will help with Nova now, but only a few. Nova will not be as ambitious as DUST was. Nova will have smaller maps and no vehicles with lots of close quarters fighting . Yes there will be corps and yes there will be a market with an economy. The masses will love it because it will be a streamline version of DUST and it will be pretty looking. That's when I create my new character named "I'lldrinkyourmilkshakeunovafaggt"! and go on the rampage. I hope I'm very wrong though.

Nothing strange about it and I am not asking you.
We all knew from the get-go that CCP was likely to not bring it up during Fanfest or (at best) give it a tiny mention. The only thing that was surprising (at all) was that the mention came straight from CEO Hilmar Viegar himself and that Dennie Fleetfoot of Dust University was able to get his hands on the prototype during this year's Fanfest.
Beyond that we all figured there was nothing substantial to bring up with Project Nova anyways considering CCP has so far refused to market any other FPS game out there other than Valkyrie and Gunjack. No hype, no foul.
