So having been fortunate enough to attend Fan Fest 2016 as well as having been one of the first people to sneak into the Chaos Testing Rooms for a round of Project Nova I swore I'd find a nice quiet location to tap out a few of my thoughts. However Fan Fest's schedule this year about in and outside the Harpa was hectic enough that I never found an opportunity to do so until I managed to catch my flight back to the UK.
First and foremost let me express how excited I was to be sitting in the audience at the FF2016 Keynote when this was announced and the first stills of the Minmatar Scout with the Precision Rifle was put on display for us to see. As any of the other CPM will tell you I rushed over to the Chaos Room to give it and Project Arena a hands on test.
While the doors didn't open for the better part of an hour I did make the most of that time meeting the CPM who managed to attend (Dennie Fleetfoot, Aeon Amadi, Sgt Kirk, and the ever elusive Darth Carbonite) as well a eat a burger with CCP Frame and GM Archduke.
Project Nova
Honestly I was very impressed with what I saw there mainly in terms of game performance, core shooter mechanics, and audio all of which were a huge step up from those in Dust 514 building on the art assets that translated between the two games. Guns sound and feel more powerful, the environmental effects look gorgeous, and despite a few U.I issues the development were already well aware of the interior of the Wyvern carrier was a joy to play especially once you located some of the viewing ports that looked out into space.
Dem Graphics!
Graphics wise Nova blew me away with how sharp and vivid the gameplay was on Unreal 4 (I think...) and how that transitioned into a really enjoyable player experience. The various effects lend themselves well to establishing an immersive setting for players to get lost in. Battleships can be seen floating past in the depth of space, the extending hull of the Wyvern provides a very tangible sense of scale, while the new effects of Drop Uplink wormholes collapsing in on themselves after destruction really cemented the deal for me.
There were only a few minor U.I issues that cropped up for me however the development team were already aware of them and only to happy to explain a few of my misconceptions. I did get lost a few times while trying to locate the objectives at initially I found that Dust 514 almost did a better job of directing you visually to your targets however after a while and a solid explanation from CCP Rattati I was able to use this and the new mini map to locate objectives and enemies alike as well as discern what floors they were on.
Additionally it was brought up that the interior of the ship did not truly capture the aesthetic design of a Caldari vessel and rather was more of a generic space ship. I do agree to a certain extent and would really like to see the sense of this being a truly Caldari vessel be brought more to the fore. That said I often forgot about that sense of dissonance when looking through one of the view ports or while standing next to a parked Gunnlogi tank in one of the main hangars.
Eargasms
The newly redesigned sound is absolutely amazing especially for weapons like the Heavy Machine Gun which no sounds and handles incredibly. Other notable aspect of sound that I loved included the 'Thunderbolt' Precision Rifle, the 'Bolt' SMG, the sound of laying down a nanohive, and if I am not horribly mistaken the less immersion breaking female A.I sound clips.
Dropsuits
In terms of Classes I am really beginning to like what I am seeing. The traditional dropsuit specialties or roles seem to be being retained as you can see in the various preset dropsuits that were available to testers. You still have your light frames with their cloaks and the new mobility enhancing 'jump jets', your medium frame dropsuits broken into the Support/Logistics and Rapid Assault presets, as well as your Heavy frames which can still take a serious beating and keep throwing back their own walls of fire with ease.
Fair warning to scouts though that while you guys were super fast in the Nova demonstration your mobility was balanced against your ability to tank damage (which wasn't very much) however there were some very quick and careful scouts about that made my life miserable.
A few last thoughts...
All in all what they showed in the Chaos Room was a great basis on which to build upon. It was fast paced, really enjoyable, and the TTK was high enough that skilled players to get into fights and out of them without instantly being dropped by 'one hit kill weapons' though that said there are ways to kill players in single hits however they are balanced out by skill requirements.
Only a few times did I really find any faults with the performance though and it I did manage to fall out of the map on a certain staircase once or twice, a few times fell to my death in the main hangar due to a very unsafe crossing between two platforms, and experience odd grenade physics when throwing one into a confined area.
Probably the funniest moment of my experience was tossing a grenade into one of these door choke points, watching it bounce of several walls comically, and detonate killing two of my friendlies (at least I think I did that....). Besides that discovering that the Shotgun had very little damage fall off and the HMG hand some pretty decent range meant that I was able to pick up kills from ranges I probably shouldn't have.
Colour me impressed with the effort the Shanghai Team has put into the project thus far and in such a short amount of time. I am really interested in seeing where this all goes from here. The percentage break downs of player feed back was very positive and I encourage people to let CCP know in a positive manner that we do want this game to get off the ground.

That's how it is supposed to be, and any real scouts won't be complaining.
Also, at which point did the brainwashing begin?

Thanks for the report, True. Core mechanics are getting solid scores from vets which is a welcome relief to be sure.
A few questions:
1) Are jump jets and double jumps two separate things? Kinda sounds like they are.
2) Aeon said jumping is better, even for heavies. Do you think there's any need for vaulting as a core movement ability?
3) Didn't see any ladders, do we know how they work?
4) Do suits still have inertial dampers?

Thank you for an amazing overview True. Was pleasure meeting you in person :)
It is always hard to make people understand that building a new game from the ground up means you will begin with a basic pvp and give that first slice as a project demo that is still extremely early. Do not call a brand new game a lobby shooter if you don't know whether if it is one (and it is not), and don't assume things that have not been confirmed, guys. :)
Looking forward to seeing you next year!

Meeting True was a breath of fresh air. It was great to meet such a forum warrior and have him so positive about Nova after playing it.
I think also having met the Devs and chatting to them as we in the CPM have, has given him a new perspective about how these games are created and the drive it requires to accomplish it.
If Nova gets green lit and you have a chance to play it as we have, we'll have a chance to polish this thing up so well that many more of you come to the next Fanfest, which I would URGE you all to do.

One of the most repeated critiques in reviews for Dust was that as an FPS, it felt below average.
So you guys are making that aspect your priority for Nova.
Seems like a no-brainer to me... but maybe that tells me all I need to know about the people that have still found reason to complain.
Something is killing new player retention.

It is most certainly not like a 'CoD pick ten system'. What was displayed in the demonstration were six presets that to some degree followed the existing dropsuit roles while showing off some new aspects of the game such as the 'Thunderbolt Precision Rifle', Jump Jets, etc.
As I understand it they want to keep dropsuit fitting more or less as it, perhaps some simplifications here and there, and otherwise add other forms of modification to things like weapons. Rattati mentioned in passing that scopes would be idea but also things like underslung grenade launchers if they are possible, High Capacity Magazines, and even Damage Profile Modifiers.

Knowing you, True, this is a really accurate review. You're not optimistic enough about the game to be delusional but you're also not so pessimistic that you would talk down on the demo. Also was kinda neat how you spotted that the ship didn't really feel like it was of Caldari design lol.
I need to get me a PC... I don't know if, by the time this game arrives, I'll be highly active but I at least want to get back into it. Seems like the mechanics will enhance the tactics.

Thanks for the info True.
I'd also like to take this moment to throw out the idea that scopes should be purely player choice, and ALL of them should be unlocked without having to unlock the scopes. Scopes are a matter of personal preference, assuming they don't have any mechanical advantages like better accuracy than other scopes, etc etc

There didn't appear to be any role bonuses in effect that would have made any scout better or worse than any of the others.
The Amarr Scout came equipped with a Shotgun, Nanohives, and Jump Jets and armour reps seemed fast but honestly not too fast. It really had the advantage at close range but as you all my know at the time the shotgun didn't have any real damage fall off so you could snipe people down corridors.
That said I quite liked the Minmatar Scout with the Thunderbolt Sniper Rifle. Much better for range but also more satisfying to use. It's shield reps were really good so you could take chip damage but keep on re-positioning for more shots.
