That is my new bet.
I was pretty sure the port of Dust514 was going to happen, even when everyone was turning dark, saying the game, and any future port, was dead in the egg.
My new bet is that CCP kept developing Legion for the past 2 years, basically transferring all features and gathered knowledge from Dust to Legion, only adapting to a newer and more powerful engine, thus making the development much quicker than we could expect.
The new Tranquility server is now online and fully operational, and is like at least twice more powerful than its older brother.
So, CCP fanfest 2016 will reveal that Legion is in open beta this summer, for the game to be released int he following 6 months. :)))

Legion was as direct copy of the legacy code on Unreal3. They quickly realized that approach wouldn't work due to the multiple issues and the PC power required to run it.
My take is that the project was silently shelved and nothing was done for a long time until someone started fooling around with a new attempt on Unreal4 and it got far enough to get the attention of management. |

Legion must change it's formula. Simply 'hardcore' fpp is not enough today. We only have hope that 'feel' form closed beta stays ;) and walking as mecenary in open 'Eve' world will have meaning again.

I have to believe that CCP will release at least a working, playable demo at Fanfest considering they are cancelling DUST in May, they had two years to develop something, they said they were, for the first time, keeping their mouths shut until they could show actual development and have been burned twice (actually four times in the grand scheme of things) already.
They could really make good this time and blow it away. If not, they really need new management.

I have the very same speculations too and here are my reasons why ::
1) Announcing the closure of the game. 2) Then massively upgrading the servers to account for more load and higher amount of players. 3) Creating a new unannounced in house test server - Solace. 4) Loads if Dust employees disappearing and not replying to any messages. 5) CCP advertising for new employees for an unannounced new game title. 6) Leaked images of rendered maps and items on the unreal engine 4 (the new game's engine).
All this and more makes me believe the new title will go into closed alpha a lot sooner than people think.

I love the optimism lol but I would be shocked if that were to happen. I would think closer to next summer at the very earliest but that's just a wild guess. It would be great if it were the case though for sure.

4) The devs used to be really good at responding and answering questions on; Reddit, Discord, their personal Twitter accounts etc
6) Here's the link to the webpage that found the leaked images; enjoy because they are beautiful!

Yeah, unmmmm no.
Phoniex is being developed on a base unreal 4 engine, while DUST and Legion where on a heavily modified unreal 3.
Further more they are starting from scratch, to reduce technical debt in the long run. However it will also increase Dev time in the short run where they have to build mechanics from scratch again.
In my opinion, FanFest will be nothing more than a tech demo, full of yet more empty promises that will never see the light of day. Don't hold your breath.

Fanfest will be nothing but another trailer. Most likely they will not even have game play ability like they did with Legion.
I say this because they purposely set the bar low saying it is in an early stage of development. Also, if Rattati is actually working on the new game that means they only started any type of heavy production on the so called new game about 6 months ago as that is around the time that he went dark.
Given the fact that in that time part of CCP Shanghai was busy releasing GunJack and experimenting in VR like the rest of CCP, the potential for progress is not super high. |

WOW I wish I could borrow some of your optimism.
FF14 was an absolute PR disaster that was completely CCP's fault. Leading people on and then pulling a total turn around which almost equated to a bait and switch proved CCP had no clue about their player base on Dust. The revolt that happened was more than justified.
People were also optimistic on WoD for about 8 years and that never even reached a playable internal alpha stage.
Eve players were optimistic all the way up to Burn Jita which was a direct result of CCP not giving a crap about their players, Hilmar even sent out a memo that essentially said they will do what we want them too.
Dust was plagued with mismanagement from the moment it was conceived which is why we never saw even close to a finished game. |

Listening, yes. That's not the same as implementing everything the community says, which is how you sink a game before it even leaves Beta.
Just look at how unbalanced games like War Thunder and MechWarrior Online have been. When you do whatever your community tells you, you run into the fact that your community aren't game developers and don't understand enough about design to be giving you marching orders.

I totally agree that there was far more failure to Legion than the announcement itself. I only point to the announcement as being what triggered the majority of the upset. I was really mad at first myself but then came to like the idea of Legion and then found out that as you mention it was using broken code transplanted from Dust and heard the rumors of what rig they had setup just to sustain that play demo they did and went back to hating the idea to the point that I pretty much gave up on CCP ever producing a really good FPS.
The path they seem to have chosen is the best one but they seem to have done it way too late IF this new game is actually still in "very early stages". By my estimates they started on this new game roughly 6 months ago but were dividing their time between the new game and Gun Jack which as you remember was their off the clock time and became a project. Having nothing to show but a trailer at Fanfest will quickly send me back into the state of "oh well I will never get to see a CCP FPS."
Please for the love of New Eden prove me wrong and have an alpha announcement at Fanfest. I am literally begging. I would not mind going back to shoveling you money in the right circumstances. Unfortunately Eve is not something that I spend a ton of money on nor do I have the desire too. |

Unfortunately Eve is not something that I spend a ton of money on nor do I have the desire too. **** if they did that and then proved me wrong as well by embracing Microsoft's announcement and going with cross-play, I would probably spend an embarrassing quantity.
Cross platform stuff does not really excite me all that much. Yes it creates a bigger player base and makes it much easier to play with friends but I feel like it also probably seriously slows down progress of the game as a whole having to not only rework every update for all of the systems involved before you can really release it.
The way things are looking I think the current Xbox will be the last one. Microsoft seems to be making a push to just having everyone game on a PC in some form whether it is an alienware console, an xbox converted to a PC, a PC, or even just a laptop. We shall see. |

Cross-platform is BS. It costs time. It costs money. It does not help balancing the game. It does not add anything interesting in our case. And nobody wants to see a multi-platform DUST2.0 either (really, we don't). So much for the argument of player base = more people will know that this is BS, turning down even more players...
CCP should REFUSE to do any cross-platform. Exception being to interact with the game via external means as the orbital strikes, impact on the market, ressource gathering, in-game politics, etc for example. Which would all be addressed by EVE Online. Plus, staying on a PC platform, DUST2.0 could evolve beyond space and time! I would agree with a companion app for example (personal barge management, fiting/game wiki Destiny style, and that is it).
My guess is Dust PS3 turned to a giant and living beta testing for Dust2.0 a long time ago. My guess is that you don't plan on the future while using UE3, even 2 years ago. I think that CCP has been working on DUST2.0 since FF14, whatever PR impact it had. This is the reason for so many updates that were completely insane (racing tanks, jumping mods, etc). They went extreme in every means possible to test how far it could go with their players, either concerning the gameplay, the loading screens, the crashes, the money making AUR offers, the skill learning curve, etc. And not only they managed to start generating cash, they must have realised that the few 3000 players crazy enough to stick with them whatever the weather (yes, I am talking about us); would keep supporting them for any possible port. Thus the announcement to close the server.
We are their pet. The difference with pets being that the pet is the one putting the money on the table to be fed! haha
Sarcasm aside, I have good hope a lot more is going on in the background, and we may have a nice surprise during the fanfest. I have good faith in the Citadel update too. Something tells me Dusters may have more impact in Eve than we ever could imagine. :)
Proud player of the most strategic and addictive massively-multiplayer FPS in the world.
