So I'm building #6...
But I'm thinking of making a few changes.
I'd like to use an i5-6600K and this motherboard. Are there any compatibility issues I might come across? Will I need a bigger PSU or a more powerful fan? Both? Maybe you know of a MB I could use instead that wouldn't have issues?
Thanks in advance.

IIRC the Z series of MB allows for better overclocking which is good to have if you buy a "K" cpu. The PSU is fine and you won't need more unless you have many drives and do extrem overclock. No need more fans ^^

You can just take build #7 and downgrade the GPU to a 390.
For future reference, I'm available more around the discord chat, so if you want a quick answer, you can visit there.

Thanks, but I've actually gotten it figured out... It cost me a bit more, but I ended up with this.
I might have overdone it on the memory, tbh... but whatever. Just one less thing I'll want to upgrade later.

As for RAM, I actually have 16gigs in my own system. I find it useful.

Wowowo Fizzer, if you think a r9 390 will give you 120 fps on a 4k monitor, you're wrong. It just won't. A 980 ti on games where 4k is useful can't achieve more than 60 fps most of the time so forget about 120 for now x)
Now, you changed the ventirad, but that's useless as you can't OC the cpu. Better save your money.
Then, you'd better wait for the next gen of gpu if you plan on doing 4k cause I believe both polaris and pascal will be great at it!

Cat Merc wrote:Build #5: Advanced GÇÿAssaultGÇÖ [RECOMMENDED BANG FOR BUCK] Link: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/qMwdsYPrice: 772$ Description: We are getting into GÇ£console crusherGÇ¥ territory. The CPU is not overclockable, but itGÇÖs still very powerful. The SSD is of higher caliber, not only having higher capacity, but higher speed and longevity as well. The real star of this show however is the R9 390, a MASSIVE upgrade over both the GTX 750 Ti and the R9 380. It is the video card I own, and quite frankly for 1080p I donGÇÖt need anything more. It plows through 99.99% of games on the highest settings at 60 or more frames per second. WARNING: I would not recommend overclocking the R9 390 with this power supply. It is a hungry beast, and the power supply is already at its limits. Alternative parts: GTX 970 (A good card, though R9 390 edges it out IMO)
So far I have already assembled most of the parts needed to make this particular build.
So far I have spent about $631 getting the following items.
- Radeon R9 390
- Thermaltake TR2 600W
- Western Digital 1TB 7200RPM HDD
- Samsung 250GB 850 EVO SSD
- PNY 8GB DDR3 Memory
All that's left now is the Intel Core i5-4460 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor, ASRock H97 Anniversary ATX LGA1150 Motherboard, and NZXT Source 210 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case which will have to be purchased online since none of the local electronics stores (including Best Buy) had them. The parts that I bought were all from my local Best Buy.
The G.Skill AEGIS 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory wasn't available at the local store but they did have a PNY alternative which was just the same but with different a brand. I don't know how much the brand impacts it but didn't matter since either one is cheap to buy. The SeaSonic S12II 520W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply was not available locally either but the Thermaltake TR2 600W showed better efficiency and it was still compatible with the setup I'm aiming for according to PC Part Picker. And despite the extra wattage it was still pretty close in price to the SeaSonic.
It seems that the price of the items listed went up a bit for some reason so the total price before getting the operating system will be about $907. Still a lot cheaper than buying a brand new pre-built computer. Unfortunately the DELL XPS case is not listed under PC Parts Picker (that's what my old computer has) so I can't determine if that case is compatible with this setup. The case shown in the link isn't that expensive anyways so I'll go ahead and buy it. Will probably just sell my old computer anyways since that thing is already 10 years old.
Here is a picture of the parts I got. https://twitter.com/Henry_Haphorn/status/729442239752056833

Hey guys! Don't buy a new graphics card now ! In one month Pascal will be out and probably Polaris as well. Prices of the current gen will drop and the new tech will be really powerful.

Better how?
EA and the like are already making games in 4K. I was under the impression it's the next biggest thing.

I'm basically never going back from 144Hz.

Better have a solid 144Hz at 1080p (or a bit less at 1440p) with a beast of a card and get a gsync or freesync monitor for a lower cost !

That's just first person shooter logic though. I'm not building a PC for shooters, I'm building it for gaming.
And honestly I'll be tempted to just snatch up these new graphics cards immediately upon release and go for a big investment, but that's only if they come with warranties. Obviously they run the risk of asploding.
If you ask me money is inconsequential when it comes to your next decade of gaming experiences.

If you ask me money is inconsequential when it comes to your next decade of gaming experiences. 144Hz vs 60Hz is a massive difference for >everything<, not just first person shooters. Even the difference between the two on my >desktop< is apparent, let alone any type of gaming.
Also, a high end gaming computer will last you for a max of 5 years. The highest end GPU's from 5-6 years ago are today's 100$-200$ medium to low end cards.
Your worry will be less about the cards exploding and more just becoming irrelevant.
