If anyone if familiar with CCP's media they might remember this trailer entitle "I was there.". While the concept is a little cheesy it got me remember my experiences with Dust 514 and what made me really enjoy this game.
At the same time it made me mildly curious as to where other players were when the moments that defined their Dust experience and what those were.
I was there when alongside representatives of PIE Inc, EoN, Hellstorm Inc, and Lokun Listamenn mercenary corporations and alliances alongside our stead fast militia allies crushed the traditional Minmatar held dominance in the Bleak Lands, Devoid, Metropolis, and Heimatar.
I was there in the Bleak Lands after we affected the first major swing of the Pendulum War and was there after that campaign on the night an I-Hub bashing fleet went through 7 systems uncontested aided by Dust modifiers.
I was there when the Min Militia cried about the broken system and how right Aero was.
I was there during the second Crusade through the Bleak Lands and Devoid that saw our operative undefeated for days at a time with no Matari forces that could not slow our advance for more than a few minutes at a time.
I was there when PIE established it's POS Forward base in Huola. The only online combat pilot able to help with the set up of the tower. I spent twenty minutes white knuckled and tasked to protect hundreds of millions of ISK worth of infrastructure in the hostile system from half the Min Militia shipping in their own materiel.
I was there when the Amarr Miltia conquered all of the systems in the CEWMPA warzoe holding dominion over space and planets as one. For that I received a campaign medal, the same such medal that has yet to be won by the Minmatar.
I made a friendship with an Intaki, a punk ass halfbreed Caldarian, hell I'm even on speaking terms with one of the Matari Militia's regular Fleet Commanders, I've met Plasmessiahs from both the Federation and the Empire, and I've worked with Amarrians whose names will go down in history as the Empire's finest warriors.
I was there when the Empress was assassinated by the Drifters and mourned her loss alongside hundreds of other loyalists.
I'll be there when we get revenge.
When I consider Dust 514 like that even half finished after these three years.... it almost seems worth it.

I miss my days as an escaped slave fighting for the Minmatar It's fun to think that while this effort was going on around me, I was just part of the ground troopers The torture performed in MinFW by those alongside True Adamance was some of the best gameplay in Dust to date, I certainly feel that is where I trained my Scout and transitions around the map (that or have the crusade stomp you).
What killed it for me, was having no-one from Minmatar side with the balls to fight back, if they could not get an equal force, most turned to Pub matches, while at the time I would play from a lone merc to sync FC to contest you.. great fights
Seeing the cowardly mentality of the Matari, I turned my back on my homeland and became a true FW merc.. Anytime a faction was in danger from their rival, I supported them and tried to make a fight. Dust gameplay is 100x better when it feels like a battle, I have fought and killed the Caldari State Task Force, Gallente Primadonnas and the crusades of the Empire...
Funny that once competition died down in A/M FW, I sided my loyalty with the Empire
Not playing EVE, and having a long standing grudge with the forums, I missed on the social aspects.
But I have been here for 3 years, seen KIngs rise and fall faster than they believed possible
*sigh* I just wish CCP had done more to accommodate competing rather than risk aversion
While many mercs focus on profits and wealth, ISK and gain has always been for me to see how much I could destroy |

This question is EASY for me. Always will be.
I was there in the first 24 hours of players acclimating to the new and controversial Aim-Assist that had JUST been activated in the game.
I NEVER, NEVER had as much fun in any evening of Dust, as I did that night. It wasn't so much what it was doing to improve MY aim (I'm poor at gun games, and always will be). It was the visual feast of seeing how the OTHER players had changed.
Almost instantly, players who used to cringe in the hilltops, and barricade themselves in the facility offices, came out SHOOTING in the open, trying to finally aim at the elite rum-n-gunners who ruled the game between 2012 and late 2013 (and I mean they RULED, back then.... lesser kids didn't stand a chance in this gloriously callous Dust-gaming).
Before the Aim-Assist, if you were caught out in the street and got shot, you bled to death with no friends. Once Aim-Assist was activated, that same fallen merc in the street would see two blue players out of nowhere rush out and try to lay down cover fire while a third rushed out to try to reach him with an injector. And NONE of those players even knew each other.... it was just intuitive courage, brought on by that boost of confidence that you could actually connect your bullets on a target for a change.
Nothing like CCP's Aim-Assist had ever been scripted before----much of its attitude towards "assisting" goes against everything people believe in about combat shooter gaming. CCP has STONES, good for you! The controversy before and after those 24 hours was off the chart. But the visuals of all that heroism and valor and willingness to sacrifice (instead of playing a game you were scared of), all in those 24 hours... O - M - G !
Thanks for the thread, True Admance
Universe of good wishes for the 49, especially CCP Eterne...

I was there when DUST University was a new corp with plenty of name recognition but few member, before anyone had learned their role well enough to teach it to others.
I was there while DUST University grew to be the largest DUST corporation with over 1800 members as I organized training programs to teach new mercenaries about the intricacies of fighting as an immortal solder.
It was my leaving DUST University which spurred the mass exodus of over 50 members, including some of their top solders, although at the time I had no idea that my leaving would have such an impact, and I only found out about it latter.
I was there for the formation of the Learning Coalition which for over two years has been a center for new mercenary training and discussion of tactics and strategies.
Most of the great moments in DUST that I was there for, were moments I had a hand in.
Hand/Eye coordination cannot be taught. For everything else there is the Learning Coalition.

I'll never forget Caldari Prime. That was the first time I felt a true connection with the universe. Even though we couldn't even officially pick a side at the time. I still enjoyed the game up until the point they added aim assist. From there it went downhill for me. Then everyone and their mother could hipfire you into oblivion. Gone were the days when you actually had to aim down the sight to hit something.
I was one of the few actual Murder Medics. Outfitted with everything to help my team. Logi Ck.0 w/Duvalle or Gek, Adv or Proto nanite injector, proto repair tool, and at least a k9 nanohive.
Those were the good ol days. I haven't played dust in over a year, but I still jump on the forums to see who's still kicking. If they ever port to PC I might join back up full time. Until then Star Citizen and Space Engineers are my space sims.

I was there when lokun made its mighty push against the blue ring. Turrets throwing helIfire at the best tankers on the field. Back to back defenses against the largest corporations.
I was there when that same alliance fell.
I was there when the guardians were awoken, and many of my brothers in arms made the exodus... Never to return. And again when the secrets of the myofibril were unlocked, I watched more kin return to the slurry.
I was there when the peoples of Soshin had their fill of the federation, and banded together in a task force for the state. The cries of freedom, turned into screams for retreat.
I was there when that wave broke, and receeded back to the ocean.

I was there when I was in a small corporation whom I stumbled upon browsing the corporation recruitment center of the forums. There I stayed for 200 days nearly building friendships with a small group of 4-5 guys.
Eventually I grew ambitious and sought the battles to be found in planetary conquest. That was when I stumbled on saxonmish and a couple of third rock in a pub squad. I challenged saxonmish that if I could beat him to see who gets the most war points in militia gear, I could get into his corp. I beat him.
I stayed in third rock for about a month, but we never pced, growing impatient I left. I proceeded to join GAM, only to find out that they suck and I left after being in their corp for 1 hour. I joined RGz, where I learned much about PC and participated in nearly every one. I was in there for roughly 2 months.
I then stumbled on a thread made by 501st headstrong, about a corp named Vader's-Fist whose plan was to conquer MH. I joined it immediately and quickly climbed the ranks. That was when 501st left and moral fell in the corp and most left, including me (but not before stealing the corp wallet.)
Then I joined AE., taking a part in the AE. v 0.H war which ended in 0.H's destruction. After that AE. grew inactive.
After that I joined WarRavens, having a blast but tired of playing "follow the leader". From there I made a new corp, which will be unnamed until the 14th of February, with the intent of the same goal as VF.

Wish I could join Lokun in SC but my computer would have an aneurysm just trying to boot up the loading screen. Also I don't think he knows True since by that time I was Harkon Vysarri using Amarr gear with Mendov Ishenko and Dakon Gerrien before they both had left D6 and before Beth Velvetino and his Surya went back to Snuffbox in Tannolen and Sujarento.

One last story. Super short. This is the moment that makes me laugh to this day, even when just typing it out. Some discription of the guy this involves. Trist O'Phate was a hilarious guy who basically was Funsies manifested into a person.
Trist and I were working our way up the super buggy terrain of Manus Peak. (When it actually was a giant mountain.) There's a few redberries up there sniping as was usual with an uplink behind them. We get up there sniper rifles in hand and I take out the uplink. We both shot one of the guys at the same time almost killing him. Then an epic fight bashing back in forth with the two reds who would soon be dead.
As many will remember from Chromosome there was only one way up to the tip of Manus Peak and it involved a lot of jumping. Well this day the Jumping gods of Dust were not in Trist favor. As I watched Trist start jumping up he suddenly did a backflip and ragdolled dead right in front of me. I only wish I could remember what he said that made it that much more hilarious. Killed by the glitchy ground and weirdness of that mountain.
I'm sure it's not as funny to others, but like all inside jokes. I was There
Edit: Also I have proof he remembers you. He even has you in one of the old War Stories I have saved on my computer. I'm sure it's online still, I'll look it up

The tankers bewilderment at the amount of damage I applied was the icing on the cake. Duuuuuude. I was just lamenting to my corpies last night about how nobody does that anymore ; ;
It got a lot more difficult in 1.6, you just slid off to much. Back when I was a dedicated AVer, that was pretty much the only way 1 guy could take on a tank.
I used to throw myself off all manner of things, dropships, buildings, mountains. Thrown myself out of flying cars too.
Good times.

I remember reading your Lokun Listamenn postings. You were dedicated. Those guys were awesome.
I remember the fight for Caldari Prime. The excitement. The feeling of being a part of something larger than yourself. Its those memories and others that I no longer participate in nonsensical "Dust is dead" antics. I had my moments, but I love this game. I don't regret spending money for aurum and mercenary packs. The learning curve and the butt whoopings I took, I regret nothing.
I only hope that Dust will resurge. I would support without question. Until then, I stop by the forums, watch the "Way of the Mercenary" video from time to time and keep the fingers crossed.

My eye was their moment. Was the moment the titan crashed into Calder prime and was reporting what was happening on the ground to egg heads in orbit (RP channels are fun)
It was a lot of fun as the back and forth between the groups truly showed what the game could be. I still remember letting dusters know that the titan was crashing too.
It was an earry moment just seeing it their burning in the background and me bing all like.... what did you guys do up their

I was there when the dragonfly and toxin were all you needed to drop 70 kills a match, when you had three grenades stronger than the cores of today. I was there when ttk was half what it is now and a new player stood a chance if he shot a proto in the back. I was there when there were real tanks and real tankers to cry about not these tin cans making scrubs whine.
I was there when the game was linked to eve. I was there when vu threatened to wipe molon helping defend and mass attack. I was there when tso's was wiped by DNS and when we absorbed that which we didn't fight for. I was there the battle GAM blew up after losing their last district again screaming about spies and 501 left. I was there when old ae left the game, when kujo gave his going away speech to alliance. Yes I was there.
I was there when the keq ringer team was wiping tso's. I was there as my allies rolled over burnt out and afraid to fight. I was there screaming at hawkin that they needed to fight win or lose. I was there winning and losing fights with my xt's from the sky when half of alliance wouldn't fight to save their own districts. I was there when hawkin left and we inherited tso's dust side. I was there more than any other time.
I was there when fake AE and fa stomped out the taco, for the last fight vs fake OH. I was there in nearly every battle, but as actively as I participated I was really only half there. The days of true competition and good fights and 5 caps driving me ever harder long gone.
And so I was there to welcome the taco into tso's, bringing it salvation after years of oppression. I was there to house my enemy. Though some I regret bringing here others have shown great honor.
I have nearly always been here, never turning on my home or my allies always playing with my true friends and helping my allies. I have been here for the height of alliance and the very bottom. I have been insulted by my enemies for my honor and praised by the vets and the small guys I have helped.
I was there for much, much more than that. But those are the events I shared with my friends in real life and what sticks with me the most.
I was there to witness nearly everything posted here, though not always involved till just before uprising. I was there though.

^ This is why it's just wrong for Dust to come to an end. It's part of the lore of New Eden, now, and has to continue in some way, or there is something seriously wrong with the EvE Universe.
Dust was supposed to be the ground and station based activity to complement what was happening in space. I will not consider it to be complete until that's how it ends up. |

Same place. One single moment defined how amazing Dust could be me. On Manus peak, you were clearing out the city socket while Aisha and I held the high ground above C but could not get past the waves of people spawning at the CRU under the flat-top.
I'm paraphrasing, but our discussion went something like this:
"We can't get past them. There's too much cover and they just keep coming."
"Drop an orbital?"
"Won't work, it won't get under there either ...."
"You're right.... wait, I think we have EvE support. Hold on." (radio silence for what seems like forever as I'm running out of ammunition)
"We have a pilot in position! Do it!! Drop it now!"
Cue glorious torrent of holy light as the first EvE laser S orbital I've seen just f*cking obliterates everything. Game over from there.
I'm pretty sure I've not experienced any moment in gaming that's surpassed that feeling. That was amazing on so many different levels.

I once met True Adamance in the field and got the lucky final shot on his Madrugar. All it took was a 3 on 1 tank fight lol. I was also there when Areo later showed up that same match and lasered me to death... repeatedly...
I was there when the Shiigeru was destroyed over Caldari Prime. (given the results in the short term yes it was tragic, but the fact that the aftermath led to the fall of Heth, and the resurgence of Ishukone, I'd say it was at least somewhat worth it.)
I was there when (I think it was Eos?) took Molden Heath and I fought in the laggy horror that was PC.
I was there when DS 10 "the Drunk heavy" personally sent me hatemail.
I was there as the Amarr took every scrap of territory from the Minmatar, meanwhile we could only slow them. *shivers*
I was there when CCP forgot to update the lore about the (second or third?) election of Jacus Roden until like a week before the "election".
I was there as one of the last 5-15 people actually posting in IGS while everyone used GD for basically every post. I mostly just posted news but took part in a few discussions.
I was there when CCP finally removed hundreds of thousands of General Taco's posts and he started making posts about how he was now "clean".
I was there when Areo and True made the thread that finally convinced me that the Amarr weren't entirely evil, only just as bad as everyone else. They were/are really good lore hounds.
Screw this I'm out!
