Out of all the people replying on this topic, as this is apparently sensitive. Are there any CPM, GM, or DEV members willing to comment. As they the people of dust might listen to your opinion, as they see you as gods not devs.

I honestly can't believe that this even needs to be ask. Here's some better question. What's in it for the people who are trying to be honest trailers? Why should they have to fight tooth and nail with someone who is impersonating them without there being any repercussions towards the person impersonating them. Why do you think this wouldn't hurt the game and ccp bottom dollar at all?

Look, the best answer I can give you is look out for the names. It is 100% your fault if you give X player your money. You clicked the button, not him. He fooled you, not the other way around. Just pay attention, unless he is causing actual harm ( besides your feelings getting hurt, or your reputation) then its ok. Your friends know you, and they know you are not a scammer. So really, plus you got a blacklist, so if you get scammed. Report it there, then everyone will be cautious.
Just the idea of you can scam is ok. But banning methods of scamming is not ok in my mind.

Well see, I think the important question is: Why is it a problem that you get banned for impersonating someone?

Again, you are not getting banned for scamming someone. You are getting banned for identity theft. DUST trading works like extreme Capitalism(no government involvement), but the moment you impersonate someone CCP gets involved. It's not a scamming issue, it is an identity issue.

I guess this to needs to be addressed but I was under the impression that the person that was scamming while impersonating someone else was not in fact banned from the game. I thought that they just got a nice name change to a mercenary xx number here plus having any ill gotten ISK and items trades reversed. Whether or not someone is actually banned is something a CPM or Dev is going to have answer because I honestly have no clue about that. Now to get back to my original/ main question. How does risk vs reward factor into this? I feel that once we start discussing this we will start getting to the source of why said person is possibly banned from the game.

The way I see it, there is no real identity issue. Let me explain that a little more...
I mean you have nothing at risk if someones name is close to yours. I'm pretty sure a little hurt reputation is not going to kill you. The Devs already said its ok to scam; this is NEW EDEN. Impersonating someone is a form, and method of scamming. Its your (the players) fault that you didn't read the name correctly. To bad, so sad little Johnny. Its so stupid that you get banned for impersonating a IN GAME CHARACTER with no relations to you at all. Just think about it, what if you have the same name on accident.

here's one reason why
One day HOLY PERFECTION logs off after normal day of dust. Soon after someone makes and account named HOLY PERFECTlON. HOLY PERFECTlON then goes and finds HOLY PERFECTION's friends, corpmates and other associates and does a whole lot nasty things to them. things so bad most people would not ever forgive HOLY PERFECTlON. People spread word of the things HOLY PERFECTlON has done and people generally hate him. HOLY PERFECTlON then deletes his own character (alt) so no one would find the fake.
HOLY PERFECTION logs back on the next day only to find that he has a whole bunch of angry mails and that he has been kicked from his corp. no one wants talk/play with him and everyone hates him. HOLY PERFECTION tries to convince people that is wasn't him but no one believes him. HOLY PERFECTION becomes sad, some would even say depressed. This has caused HOLY PERFECTION emotional harm in what seems was the only reason HOLY PERFECTlON was created. all this happened because one guy decided that he was going to try a ruin a guy's relationship with everyone he knew. and that no longer has anything to do with dust at that point.

To answer the OP.
Because of the constant flood of trade glitch complaints in the petition system, as well as to curb exploitive behavior not intended by CCP.
Its similar to the reason third party API counterfeiting is now bannable.
The practices create a much bigger headache for GMs. Scamming is allowed, but pulling off a scam in such a way that a GM has to get involved beyond an email saying "sorry, scamming is not against the TOS" is no longer acceptable.
Example, if you were to make a character that mimiced me, and the newbie missed the cues, and you violate the ToS while scamming someone in my name, (something I personally give no f**ks about) and minimal scrutiny happens and I get banned in your stead...
Wrll this starts a chain of events where I get mad, emails are sent, my account gets unbanned and yours gets banned for the TOS violations.
Basically it's you covering your scamming and trying to escape consequences by foisting the consequences on me, both virtual consequences and real ones. And it makes the GMs have to do three or four (hundred) times the work of what would otherwise be a "scamming is not against ToS" stock email.
You're being punished for making CCP employee lives more difficult at the end of the day.

Let me stress again that a person impersonating someone as far as I know is not actually banned from the game but in fact gets a free name change courtesy of CCP . Dust and Eve are supposed to be an immersive role playing games. The risk that you speak of is only taken by the person who is considered the honest trader. So I will ask this again what risk does an impersonator take when doing this? As far as I can see it is little to none. You are more versed then I obviously with this subject and therefore would have the most knowledge on this. So I'm going to ask you directly. What risk do you take by impersonating someone else? I think it is quite obvious that the reward would be greatly in your favor.

Not according to official policy. There was a grace period to allow everyone to shift gears, which is probably where the name changes come. But so far as I am aware the practice has been solidly bannable for months.

CCP has a game to run, they cant worry about crap like this. Its obvious this game is small. An augment is extremely, " secluded". Its the same people 24/7 posting/complaining. That's why this game isn't getting bigger, CCP has to deal with our crap. Give them a break here, they cannot hear every post on impersonating.
And if you are correct, and people are posting on alts they can transfer the money; then proceed to leave. They can donate money to their main corporation. Then, leave get that account banned. Do it all over again, and get rich. Your creating a loop hole anyway. I appreciate the efforts on trying to protect peoples reputation, but frankly, the games dying. CCP cannot afford to waste their time with our problems.

When you get scammed its YOUR fault. impersonating someones account is a method of scamming. They are saying that they are someone else. Now weather you choose to believe that is on you. If they scam you, that your fault. The person never made you at all. Plus to top it all of, GM is wasting his time answering tickets about impersonating. Think about it, just let CCP get out a patch/update with no tickets. Itll get done faster, hopefully

You're being punished for making CCP employee lives more difficult at the end of the day. I knew, and am well a wear why CCP bans for impersonating. However, in the first place. Why dont GM ignore those tickets, then close them. Boo hoo someone is hurting their reputation. It is not the devs job to keep your reputation in check. Am I wrong? Because it broke the rules, it is there job to resolve these issues no matter how major or minor. Just because you don't care about it doesn't mean it should go unpunished. The GM are supposed to handle those issues, it is their job. We aren't wasting their time because that is their sole purpose and have no actual influence in the development of the game. Again, they are Game Moderators, they solve issues and regulate players who break ToS.

This has caused HOLY PERFECTION emotional harm in what seems was the only reason HOLY PERFECTlON was created. all this happened because one guy decided that he was going to try a ruin a guy's relationship with everyone he knew. and that no longer has anything to do with dust at that point.
one of many things you could do with a stolen identity. One I have a mic two read my name more careful next time three my friends would immediately put a halt to it so no one else gets scammed. the point, you completely missed it. I get what your saying here, good augment. Is it really worth time to send in a ticket; and furthermore if HOLY PERFECTION is really that harmed my that. He needs to get more friends XD

If we wasted less time trying to get people in trouble in game. We could get more people outside the game to play.
