I've posted in favour of ideas like this. However I didn't realise matchmaking was account based rather than character based. Perhaps matchmaking can keep up with player's ability to field good gear better than I thought. I've seen some videos recently of newer players, matches didn't seem too proto-riddled. I guess I should make a new PSN account to test properly. Not saying to give up on these ideas, but perhaps there is a more important solution:
I think perhaps the problem is more people's willingness to put up a fight. I was in a redline stomp yesterday on the redlined team. What was odd about this match was that the enemy team were all using low tier gear. They had starter fits and apex. A little advanced and almost no proto.
Ironically I started the match in a proto Min sentinel (testing my new lvl 4 skills and had some aurum salvage), but I instantly got wrecked by some guy in an Apex Gal assault with a BAR. Admittedly not a great example of gameplay on my part, but this guy was good (insert comment about OP Gal assaults).
Looking at the end of match screen, whilst the Gal assault guy was clearly a good player with most of the other team's kills, there didn't seem to be many other high scorers. I wouldn't have said they had particularly good players.
I finished top with 14 kills and 10 deaths, from pushing out of the redline and dying. Most of my team however had only 2 or less deaths. I counted 10 players who died 2 or less times, all with very few or no kills at all. A couple of others died 9 times with no kills.
What exactly were my team doing? I saw no evidence that my team were incapable of fighting, and the other team weren't using expensive gear or full of powerful slayers. Matchmaking was probably working fine and the teams had even potential. We were redlined all match simply because my team didn't try. We weren't even outnumbered.
Perhaps the solution to improve battles is to encourage fighting. I suggest rewards. Despite finishing the match with way more warpoints than anyone on my team, I didn't receive a great deal of payment. Maybe nobody on my team bothered because there just wasn't anything in it for them?
Anyone should be rewarded for going up against a stomp in cheap gear and fighting. CCP needs to stop tracking K/D and start rewarding fighting, especially against the odds. Going out and shooting dudes should result in much higher profit than hiding in the redline. That means payment - losses.
I'm not suggesting everyone should be compensated for losing a load of proto gear, but if you fight hard in cheap gear you should make substantial profits, regardless of if you are redlined or not. As for fighting a numerical advantage, if you are the only one on your team fighting you should get your whole team's payment, combined.
This might get people to fight. And if people actually try, matches will be a lot fairer and fun, regardless of what gear people use. |
