On the fence, but leaning towards probably not. Starting in closed beta, we were all figuring it out together. The divide now is just silly. I'd survive as a new player because I already know the game, but I can't imagine trying to take on the mountain of obstacles as a fresh newbie plus protostomps for very long. Maybe I'm just jaded?

I would definitely keep playing.
The customization. The grind. The people I have met, befriended, and the ones I have yet to meet. The challenge.
No game is fun when it's ++ber easy and everything is handed to you. Look at destiny. That's trash. Every level and every boss has "glitches" that allow you to finish with little to no work or challenge.
I find this boring.
I want to fight.
I want the challenge. Without it there is no sense of accomplishment or gain.

No, I would of quit after 2-3 hours. Reason being is that there is nothing there to really help the new players. I created another account so I could confirm this and find out what it is like from their point of view. Of course I did have a better understanding of Dust, so I did not fail as hard.
First, there are no prompts to teach you basic controls and commands. Yes, by now most people would of played an FPS and know the commands would be similar, however the lack of tutorial for something so common and basic is a bit nerve racking. Hell, the Souls series (Demon Souls, Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2) is notorious for throwing you to the wolves, but they do teach you the basics first and give you some lube. Because of this, you will be spending the first match learning how to move, like a baby taking it's first steps.
Second, there is no tutorial for skills or fitting loadouts. This is actually something that is crucial to the game yet there is no prompt or anything teaching you how/what to do. Previously there was, however it was no longer there (Note for this experiment I borrowed my mate's PS3 and made a new account using a new email and stuff).
Thirdly, Instant Battle Academy over too quickly. Once you reach over 2,000 lifetime WP, you are thrown to the wolves. For a new player, this really won't take that long, and once they are thrown out to the wolves, they are f.cked. There is no way a new player can compete with a vet or even someone who has been here for a few months, and it is not only because of protosuits and gear, but mainly skills and SP. The new players dont have the SP to stomp back.
Now this game is absolutely amazing, and it is easily within my top three favourite games for the PS3, and in my top 10 of all time favourites, however if I was a new player who never even heard of Dust or EVE, I would of uninstalled after a couple hours.
Edit: All these tutorials can be veiwed under the help menu in your neocom, but let's be honest there, how many people would sit there and go through all of it?

So I started playing about 2.5 months ago now and I gotta say it was tough to get to 6mil SP, which ain't ****. I've played EVE and many different games, mostly on PC, so the complexity of the interface and how skills are unlocked weren't new to me. Understanding what they all translated to in gameplay was not very easy to understand.
It wasn't until almost a month in that I saw guides talking about racial weapons and finally understood what suit types give what bonuses to which weapons etc... But by then I had wasted SP on not so important side weapons and such.
Now that my suits average 25-33 meta I'm playing with full officer and proto suits. I can almost instantly tell when I've come across a stacked suit. Their shields and armor are just higher, you can feel it right away. Conversely since I do have some decent kits, I can feel it against weaker suits than my own, I melt some people so fast I feel bad. Then I realize how often that happens to me and I have to say, I melt people less often than I get melted lol.
My buddy started playing with me and he luckily had downloaded the game and created a character quite awhile ago and forgot. He had 21mil SP stocked up, so I helped him skill up to proto in a few categories. He said he hates playing without it now because he gets rektd otherwise, only problem is he barely had enough isk to pay for his skills so he's limited in running proto.
He gets immensely frustrated when he's forced to use militia or standard gear because he is new to the tactical FPS genre. I have asked him if he would keep playing if he didn't have so much SP starting off and he said probably not. Only because he has less patience for this game, not knowing EVE and having no tie to the New Eden universe. This really diminishes the importance of Dust. That is probably the only reason I've kept playing, feeling like Dust will get ported and it will be something great. That and a few really friendly helpful folks on here who make me wanna log on everyday just to say what's up.
I would recommend Dust 514 to someone, only if I could put a big warning label on it. Tell them they are going to feel frustrated by many things ranging from technical problems to ******* players, but if they get into a decent corp with a good community they can have a lot of fun. I'd let them know the depth of Dust which can be frustrating can also be the most engrossing part, so appreciate the depth. |

Anyone saying 'yes because I like the challenge' probably doesn't see that this is the case now.
There are a few things about Dust that other games just don't offer. If those are important to you (like they are to me) then you're likely to put up with large amounts of bull****.
So I'm a yes, but only because Dust is theoretically a perfect game for me. If I were a new player just looking to try out a new FPS, I'd run for the hills.
Something is killing new player retention.

Yeah, that's why I'm on the fence with it all. DUST has the potential to be the perfect game for me. I'm not sure where my shift started, but I think lately with the stomps, the reality of how officer gear got to where it has to begin with, plus countless other concerns that I've denied in hopes of that perfect game potential being met even just partially, that I just don't see it playing out short of a complete rebuild, port, and wipe.
To the point of this thread though, I doubt I'd start over even with the potential of it being that perfect game it could have been. At least not with the game in the current state that it seems to be now. For context of how blindly hopeful I tend to be, I still read and post in the Legion forum (*drops a pin for the echo*).
