Now that I can stack 600+ shields onto an assault with 40 regen, or a logi with 45, and get my delay down to below 2 seconds with a regulator or two...
Doesn't that make it comparable to what you'd expect from armor? Or is it optimal to boost shields to 70 or 100 regen?
Still don't understand how to make a proper shield fit, as only just a few weeks ago people would advise me to not go above 40 or 50 regen, as you really don't need more regen.
(I feel like I ask this question every update and still have yet to find out the best ratio)

Personally I like faster regen.
I haven't tried tried a Cal assault yet, but I just did a game in a Min heavy. Had over 500 shields and a over 60 regen. Felt pretty good for hit and run.
Aeon's got a good video demonstrating a Cal assault with over 100 regen. Seemed pretty good. |

(I feel like I ask this question every update and still have yet to find out the best ratio) Shields are all about regen. No matter how good your shields are, certain weapons can reduce them to zero in virtually an instant. You need to be able to regenerate them ASAP, or you're toast. People who say armour is better are fundamentally correct, with regard to strength. But shields' strength is in the fast regen, pure and simple. They are only now getting to what they should have been all along. |

I've run cal assault since beta. Two fits, one for open maps and one for urban areas. I generally use a higher shield hp fit on open maps.
Honestly though, if you run armor suits a lot you're going to suck at shield tanking. Before the update I could go +15 kills and a max of 5 deaths. Now I'm going over 20 kills and average only 2 or 3 deaths. I haven't changed my fitting or style. It's just shield tanking is a lot different and once you've trained yourself on shield tanking beyond the fitting, then you'll see its power.

Assuming no regulators you can choose between a static 72.8 hp (give or take) from the shield extender at an enormous fitting cost or you can go with the energizer and get (assuming 40hp/s base recharge) an additional 19.9hp/sec recharge.
What that equates to is about 7 seconds shaved off your total regen time (from zero to full shield hp). Considering that most rifles sit around the 350-450 DPS range, you're probably better off focusing on regen.

I haven't played in two days and won't be today (staying at my brothers house then visiting my girlfriend) so my answer is pre-foxfour.
REGEN TANK!
Honestly, if my sHP/s is low (sub 50) I'm not as aggressive. (basically all my basic fits cause comp regulator is life)
But now let me go into my competitive fits... AKA my FW assault.
75.11 sHP/s @ 463 sHP.
The reason why I do high regen is, the chance to survive.
See, waiting about 5 seconds to have full sHP is better than waiting about 8/9 seconds.. Also in the moment you dive behind cover to get sHP, you get more back in the case regen is interrupted.
Keep it under 50? BAH! BLASPHEMY! Try 2 energs n you'll be far happier :D
Forever ADS. Best role.

I personally think energizers work best for sentinels. 67 hp shield rep and 7 hp armor rep on a caldari sentinel makes it so you don't need a logi as much. I think it is also more cost efficient since an ADV recharger is equal to a basic energizer. It also helps with buffering. Example: 330 shield with 550 armor and 60 shield regen. You could take a grenade to the body and regen enough shield to take the next. It also helps with cover firing when there is a sniper.

Using more than one energizer costs you roughly 25 hp from your total per energizer on a sentinel. Mass stacking them can give great regen. It can also deeply hose you.
6% penalty to base HP can hurt badly if you are unprepared for it.
WoW has taught me that Purple means Legendary. This means Quafe suits are the optimal loadout for killing all of you.

As a Minmatar you gotta remember to not go full Caldari. We both can shield tank but Min suits have their own strengths.

thats situational. i used to run a triple energizer and regulator fit to fight ScR user in cqc range by running circles around while they overheated the rifles. they cant hit me reliably and id just keep regn my shields. id shoot them when they overheated.
not sure if that still works these days though |

Doesn't it depend on how quickly you want to get back into the fight, or conversely, how long you can manage to stay away from it? Coz regen only happens when you're not under fire. Am I over-simplifying it? Coz that seems pretty simple.
I would've thought there would be a balance to be struck depending on your playstyle.
On a slight side-note - two thoughts: 1. should regen not be interrupted by splash damage (I'm assuming it is)? 2. when are logis getting shield reppers, and in terms of racial bonuses, would those be on the current min logi or another race's suit?

Okay, semi-related question: what is supposed to be the difference now between shield and armor rep tanking? This update makes the tanking styles of Caldari and Gallente similar so what's supposed to be the advantage of each?
Gallente is photon gear confirmed.

Shield Tanking It's a hit and run style. You do your damage get out to refresh then get back into the action. So your leaving engagements a little quicker then armor tanking but your getting back into them faster as well.
Armor Tanking COME AT ME BRUH!!!!!!!! You have more health and your repping constantly while into your main tank. This allows you to stay in fights longer because you can rep through some damage. Be wary tho. Getting low on health will leave you vulnerable because your repping at a lower rate then shield. This can be fixed with equipment tho......
