So May 3, 2014 there was an announcement that 'boils down' to "We are moving DUST 514 from the PS3 to a different system." This was at CCP's big convention where they like to release big things: EVE FanFest. After that, the only mention of Legion or transition has been "If Legion becomes a thing" or "we will let you know when it is set in stone, one way or another."
On November 7th, 2014 there was an announcement of a new game in a new universe, something they have not done in 17 years, by Blizzard called Overwatch at BlizzCon; their big convention. The beta was slated to come out January 2015 but Blizzard being Blizzard (Operation CWAL anyone?) the beta was pushed back to "Fall 2015", probably around November to coincide with Blizzcon 2015.
We have two companies that are notorious for (euphemistically) "not releasing a product until it is good and ready" or (bluntly) "dragging their feet through the development phase" with two new products that 'they haven't done before.' Which is going to happen first: Overwatch is released as a Closed Beta/Full Released Game or Legion* is fully announced as either shelved or greenlit?
* For the purposes of 'Legion', I mean "A continuation of DUST 514 on a new system, be it PC, PS4, XBone, or any combination of the previous: a sci-fi FPS set in New Eden where the players play as ground pounding mercenaries."
Speculation, go!

Considering CCP is going to milk every single drop they can out of the players here on PS3 before moving I think Overwatch and many other "projects" will come first.
If people want CCP to port this game they need to STOP spending money. The accounting department makes all the real decisions.

Good question but my guts are leaning towards Overwatch. Legion "feels" dead especially when you got the H man saying Dust is now profitable. Why rock the cash cow boat?

Why would CCP invest millions on porting when they are making money right here milking a broken game on a dead system with a skeleton crew?

If people want CCP to port this game they need to STOP spending money. The accounting department makes all the real decisions. CCP is a business. They are motivated by profit. If Dust 514 suddenly becomes unprofitable at best they are going to leave it in it's current state of hotfixes and infrequent updates; what I have come to call "maintenance mode". At worst, they shut it down completely.
If the players want Dust to get ported then Dust needs to remain profitable. Players need to purchase aurum.
Simple right? Not quite.
Many players wouldn't mind spending aurum if they knew where this game was going. So then we have a catch-22; players won't buy aurum without news of Dust 514's future, CCP won't discuss Dust's future unless the game remains profitable.

Basic rule of business: Never throw a profitable model in the trash. As long as Dust + PS3 = profit it is not getting changed.
If CCP wants to stay in the FPS game they will go to the customers.
If CCP does not want to stay in the FPS game then everything will be dropped as soon as they are no longer profitable anyway.
Until enough players have given up on this game or stopped spending money their hand will not be forced and they will coast along milking up a small profit attempting to recoup some of the insane startup costs which mean that Dust is most likely still very much negative.

There was never a 'Legion Announcement'.
There was a "Hey, look at this cool video of Dust with better graphics". Nothing more
I'm sure the the severely negative community reaction more or less aborted the Legion Fetus on the spot.
Since the project was never officially announced or started there is nothing to officially cancel.
They're just stuffing it in the attic and waiting for people to stop talking about it.

Edit: Added further clarification in bold.
Blizzard has a habit of not releasing anything until it's actually ready. I remember reading an article where they explicitly stated that deadlines are a null issue for them. They are more interested in releasing a finished game rather than a kinda finished game just to meet a deadline.
I've got my money on blizzard though, as they were one of my favorite developers with the original Warcraft and later star craft series, as a kid. |

If CCP currently had plans to port DUST they would have told us. There's no point in developing in secret when you can announce and generate excitement and spending.
That doesn't rule out a change of heart in the future, but it means their current plan is to let DUST run in maintenance mode to recoup as much of its development costs as possible. I imagine we still have a few years of PS3 life as long as enough of us spend enough money to keep the lights on.
The problem with a port is deciding on a mission. Does it stay on the console and remain a lobby shooter or does it move to the PC where it can integrate more deeply with EVE?
What are the costs and benefits from each? What is the competition in each arena? What would it cost to develop?
CCP hasn't had a great track record in developing a FPS and what they did learn has likely left with the devs they let go, so it would mean either ramping up skill a second time or oursourcing the project.
As much as I would love to see an exciting furture for DUST my understanding is that we will have what we have now with minor tweaks and updates until it starts losing money again. At that point the servers will be turned off.
So enjoy what we have while we have it. |

As players we all want to see it, but wishful thinking isn't going to make it appear. I want the rocket belt I was promised as a kid, but it doesn't exist either.
DUST exists only on the PS3 on Unreal 3. There was a hack for Unreal 3 on the PC, but it was billed as an exploratory concept and that we would be informed if it was going to turn into an actual project. It didn't and we weren't.
If you think otherwise please explain the rational for pumping money into secret development when an announcement would generate new life and new revenue.
Beta was a heady time of grand promise and excitement. We played hard and posted hard, trying to help CCP make the best game possible. We loved being in at the start where we could influence direction. It was fun and it was frustrating. It was a hell of a ride.
But that ride came to an abrupt halt at Fanfest 2014 when CCP abruptly shut down all hope by having zero DUST content at the event and announcing maintenance mode for DUST. Legion was a small bit of fluff used to distract us.
If you like DUST in its current incarnation, keep playing. It should last a few more years if enough people drop some AUR on it.
If you want to experience the excitement and frustration of participating in a Beta, build yourself a PC and join Star Citizen .
This isn't an either or decision either. You can do both.. |

Just about finished caring to be honest... And wont be spending another penny on Dust until something is announced that amounts to a long term future.
Even if its that Mercs will become a component of EVE (which is good because I have EVE accounts).
Sure the more money that gets spent the more likely they are to develop, and we have seen proof of this with the 2015 roadmap and progress. But what of the future......

Personally I give RSI and Chris Roberts an excellent chance at making "The Best Damn Space Sim"(tm) ever.
They have the talent, the money, the enthused player base, and the most modern technology. They are starting from scratch with the aim of first person ships and personal combat so they don't have legacy design holding them back.
I think they will achieve CCP's vision of "One Universe".
I think RSI will take some players from CCP, but I don't think it will kill EVE. The two games are different enough that there will still be a market for EVE. Players who love controlling whole markets and areas of space will need to stay in EVE. Players who love griefing will probably need to stay with EVE too as the opportunities will be lower in SC. |

Also they were hiring for an architect/coder for Legion the project. I think it is evolving into something else which happens a lot on games. Poor project management lets creative flow meander the game around until eventually someone is forced to take all the creative ideas, jam them into one game and see if that pile of horse dung is awesome.
