All I'm getting from where this thread went is: having an SSD seems to make players who don't, lag and rubberband when you get close.... If you are loading faster I have no doubt the teleporting we see are those with SSD. (Or potatoweb, take your pick) When the teleport always seems to be in their favor, SSD. Glitchy stutter bs skipping about, potatonet.
An outright advantage over other players. Possibly even responsible for the current state of matches, given how many people I have seen talking about owning one.
Dust was written for a uniform set of hardware. The more I think about it the more certain I am. Once enough people have an SSD, it will become unplayable to those without...

It only helps those who have one. As I clearly pointed out. It is actually making dust worse for those without. Giving you a true advantage.

Are the A/V cables required to play in 480p? Or can I just change the settings while using the HDMI cable? I'm currently trying the second approach, as I don't have A/V cables. But I'm noticing that chevrons, icons on the map, objectives, and various things don't line up with there actual location. Is this normal?

Appreciate the time and effort put into this article for the benefit of DUST but after trying literally everything but an SSD there are in my opinion 3 main things that make noticeable differences.
1st - Resetting your PS3 before battles (PC) makes the most immediate difference and really should be mandatory but it does not guarantee a smooth match.
2nd - If you can stomach the lower resolution setting (480p or 560p or something like that) this does make a noticeable difference to overall performance and reduced input lag but again it looks terrible and does certainly make it much harder to spot enemies at distance.
3rd - Having a fresh install of the game or having all mails and excess junk deleted certainly improves some aspects of the performance of the game, especially the fitting screen and other menus.
At the end of the day there is only so much you can squeeze out of an overtaxed and ageing system like the PS3. |

For me personally, deleting all mail and contacts proved enough to eradicate most of the FPS lag. Add in a reset before every PC and I can enjoy a decent experience.
SSD as an investment does not end at PS3. As it is an item easily installed, in can be reinstalled on different system.
I, for example, use my old computer SSD which got too small for me nowadays in my PS3 but it's perfect for console where Dust is the only game I have.

I'll leave what SSD you purchase up to you, but apparently Samsung, Intel and Crucial are good brand names. Now for how to physically remove your HDD and install your SSD, and then how to install the ps3 OS once its in there. HERE is a tutorial on how to physically remove your HDD and install a SSD on a slim. After you do that, go to THIS link, you will need it to install the latest ps3 software onto a flash drive. HERE is a tutorial video on how to install the latest ps3 OS onto your SSD once it is in there, the site it tells you to go to in the beginning of the video is the one I linked.
How To Prevent Network/Server Lag Compared to fps drops players have less control of network lag, as there aren't as many things you can do to prevent it. However I do have some useful tips, again listed least time consuming/easiest first.
- Make sure your Battle Server is set to your region! Gamemode's like FW and PC ARE NOT purely whatever server you have selected, the server for those gamemode's is decided based on where the majority of the players in the battle are based out of. To take full advantage of this and avoid playing on a server that does not suit you, you can try to minimize playing with and against people that are not from your region.
Many leaders of PC corps regularly tell their players to switch their battle server to the one that would give them the most advantage, in PC people from the same region in the world often blue up, so the game decider between say a Euro corp and a Latino Corp is often the competition for the server. Sad, but true.
- If you find that your internet connection seems to degrade over the course of a day or two, your might find THIS info useful, as you may there may be a problem with your network configuration or your router in general. If fixing it seems like too much work, rebooting your router at least once a day should stave off the connection degradation. HERE is a quick 2 min tutorial video on how to do it.
- Establish a wired connection between your ps3 and your router. Many people experience a significant improvement to their internet connection. Wireless is fine so long as your router is within close proximity to your ps3. The further away it is, the weaker the connection. Wired being the best. HERE is a tutorial video on how to set up a wired connection.
- Have a faster internet connection. I know for most people this is really obvious, but a lot of you seem to prefer/only have access to potato internet, which is unfortunate. You should have at least 8 megabits per second, anything less than that is potato status and will make you lag like hell.
How to lessen Input Lag/delay The most sure fire way to reduce input lag is to purchase a new monitor with as little ms as possible, and to play on a lower resolution. HERE is a site that may help you find the one best for you.
If this option does not seem appealing, lowering the visual settings on your TV is an okay alternative, any setting that improves the image in general. It is also a fact that wired controllers produce better response times than wireless in general, but it's a very small and inconsequential difference and depends on the which brand name you purchase your controller from, which I can't help you with.
Kalante Schiffer knows more about this I do, HERE is a link to his post further down in the thread.

If you want 80 or 90% less framerate drop, simply NEVER PLAY GALLENTE RESEARCH FACILITY. Since I personally made this change most of the other stuff isnt even an issue. See once those memory leaks start quality goes down even after that match. In PC or FW this is not viable option, but for pubs just leave it. The fewer instances of this map in play on TQ the better. Just leave.

no amount of hardware is going to fix the issues with the software or netcode. its not incumbent on the customer to run the game at 480p and drop more than $100 on supplental hardware to alliveate some lag on a game from 2013; that is all but absent from other ps3 online games. destiny has far more content, textures maps and models to load not to mention code for AI, with the players i run with there just as diverse as the ones on dust, spanning the states, europe, and australia, and yet i dont have to reset my ps3 every few hours to keep destiny stable.
Yes Destiny has a bigger software budget, but how it runs compared to Dust 514 demostrates that its not a hardeware issue.

I have not played in like 4 months. Jumped on lastnight and went in a PC against some jumpy Latinos and it was lagging like crazy balls. Good thing everyone sucks now cause i can't imagine what it would be like to play against good players in this lag. But maybe from playing so much Rainbow 6 i forgot that games are not ment to lag. I can't believe we used to play dust so much and try to ignore the lag.

Arirana wrote:Lag and low fps has been an incurable plague of the dust bunnies of New Eden since the birth of our kind. However, there are ways to fight it. The first step in fighting lag and low frames per second is understanding the causes, and understanding the different times of lag. Also, that lag and low fps are different. HERE is an article about why they're different but can be caused by the same things leading to the two being confused. Low Frame Rate The most common and recurring performance problem is low fps. Its pretty straight forward and easy to identify, as the main symptom is your gameplay looking a little more like a slideshow. It's often caused by memory leaks or processes in general that require too much RAM. Network/Server Lag The main symptom of network lag is something called rubber banding. Rubber banding is the phenomenon where actions performed by the player seem to be "undone" with consistent frequency. Here's an EXAMPLE video of rubber banding. This is most often caused by a poor connection with the Dust 514 servers, either via ping, a poor internet connection on part of the player, or server side problems. Dust 514 shares servers with Eve Online, on many occasions massive battles have broken out in Eve online which can put large burdens on the servers altogether leading to network lag for both games. Input Lag This one is less known about, it's basically the delay between your TV receiving a signal and it being displayed, as well the amount of time it takes for the game to react to commands sent from your controller or kb/m. How To Prevent Drops in Framerate As of right now there is no way known to me for a player to prevent memory leaks altogether. There are ways to slow and lessen its effects, which I will explain right now, listed in order of the least time consuming and easiest to perform.
- Open your neocom, go to System Operation, then to options, then to video. Set your texture detail to low, and your effect detail to low. This is very easy, and improves performance slightly.
- Turn off your trophies. PS menu> Trophy Collection> Press Triangle> Set to Offline mode. I saw a significant performance improvement.
- Deleting all mails and contacts is known to yield immediate performance improvements. Similarly, keeping the number of channels you are in to a minimum reduces framerate drops as well. Other things such as how many boosters you have running or queued at once or how many fittings you have have lesser significant impacts on performance. Of course, these options are sacrificial, but they are quick and easy.
- Disable voice chat through System Operation. Voice chat is a tested and proven source of severe frame rate drops, its just common sense the less the Dust client is trying to process the less performance issues on your plate. With a little discussion and planning, you and your friends can find an alternative means of communication that doesn't cause lag and is actually more reliable than Dust communication albeit less convenient.
Of course there's little reason not to utilize Dust Comms when not in battle if the need arises. I use Curse as my alternative communication program, my ps3 setup is right next to my computer. (Nyain San used Skype back in the day. Yes, the whole japanese speaking team in a skype call)
- Resetting your game via quitting the game to the PS menu and relaunching is the most obvious yet slightly time consuming and tedious option, but is known to temporarily fix memory leaks. Hard resetting involves shutting down your ps3 entirely, and restarting it after a small amount of time has passed. This is even more effective and also gives your ps3 a chance to cooldown.
- De-Fragmenting your HDD if you have one and keeping your ps3 clean are essential. Defragging your HDD (hard disk drive) basically moves relevant data closer together and to more easily accessible locations in your hardrive, increasing data read speeds. Cleaning your ps3 is highly recommended and should be performed at least once a week to prevent overheating (which can lead to YLOD). This is one of the more tedious options, but is easy to perform once you know what you're doing. HERE is a tutorial video on how to do both.
- Playing in standard definition aka 480p is one of the most effective ways to prevent framerate drops, but as can be expected, it looks crappier than 720p. HERE is a tutorial video on how to easily change your ps3 to 480p/SD from HD, and vice versa.
- Swapping your HDD (hard disk drive) for a SSD (solid state drive). This is by far the most effective way to prevent drops in framerate, due to the SSD's superior data reading speeds. However, this is also the most costly and time consuming option. If you choose to get an SSD, PLEASE know and remember that you should not defragment an SSD, as it does not benefit from it, rather it wears it down faster. HERE is a more thorough explanation.
sorry for the stupid question but, if you defragg the HDD in the ps3, all the file will be loss?

No, defragging just puts all the data that goes to the same thing in the same area basically. It's like having a group of friends that live on different floors of an apartment building; defragging doesn't evict them, it puts them on the same floor.
