GÇ£You try. Try to help them if you can. ItGÇÖs the only thing you can do. Helping comes in many different forms though.....sometimes it's impossible to know how to start.GÇ¥ It was the only response Eddie could muster looking at the row of hastily constructed graves. The mood was a dour one and his words seemed so unconvincing given the circumstances. GÇ£Could they have been saved? IGǪ.I just donGÇÖt know.GÇ¥
He turned away from the graves and back to the road. It led far off into the distance and would eventually split leading him far away from this accursed stretch of highway.
The question Jason had asked was more complicated that simple moralising would allow for. The guilt was there from the killing. He hated it, never seemed right to him, but acting in self-defence had not felt wrong. HeGÇÖd no answer that be believed the follower would accept, just a feeling.
On the horizon the thick plumes of smoke that theyGÇÖd spied that very morning continued to rise from the direction of the Nipton settlement. The very sky seemed to darken.
Muttering with apprehension he set off on the trail of Max and Lucas. If his memory of the road served they only had a few short miles at best to cover before theyGÇÖd arrive on the outskirts of the bustling settlement. He spared a single glance back at the collapsed building where heGÇÖd killed two people
GÇ£Ayuh, I know they could have been.GÇ¥ He whispered, and put them out of his mind forever.

Jason listened stone-faced to Eddie's reply. Jason wasn't sure if even Eddie believed what he was saying, but he appreciated the answer, though he was not sure he believed it. He had seen the worst of Freeside; those accepted help and those who would rather take from others what little they had, like the bodies now in the graves before him. These were the kind of people who caused the problems the Followers tried so desperately to solve. Were they really worth saving? Everyone was worth saving. It was something he knew, or thought he knew. Yet now he wondered, after defending himself from those kinds of people, if it was entirely true.
He had not stopped frowning. This would bother him until he found his own answer, or grew so sick of wondering that he simply gave up.
He waited a few more seconds in silence before continuing on behind Eddie trying to focus on something else, anything else. Nipton. The trip walk was a low point. No words were spent, at least from Jason as they took the walk to the town. He remembered when he had passed through. The town was a den of debauchery. There were decent enough people if you could find them but Jason had been solicited from the time he stepped into town. The innkeeper was nice enough and polite but the night air was filled with the sort of sounds you would expect from what he had heard of Gomorrah.
The pillars of smoke had grown incredibly thick now and were it any later in the day, the sun might have been blocked by the black smoke in the air.
More people were in danger no doubt. He hoped that in some way he could help them.
"I hope Max and Lucas are okay," he stated out loud. He didn't want to have to bury people he was slowly coming to care about.

Legionaires kept doing what they were ordered to. The cries of people echoed through the town as they were tortured and killed. Crucified, decapitated, burned and enslaved. No one was safe. There were some that fought but they were quickly killed. Max was frozen in place. The scene all too familiar to him from his days in the legion.
Vulpes spoke up again. Simply stating, "They are weak, we are strong. You are strong. Don't waste your time protecting the profligates. They don't care if you would live or die. We would. You are a Centurion, Maximus. Own up to it."

[Perception 9] Still hiding and observing, Lucas was able to overhear most of what was said between the two. It was clear this Vulpes was trying to convince Max to rejoin the legion, it seemed odd though. Maximus would surely be considered a traitor by the legion, would the truly welcome him back so openly? 'He's more likely to be strung up to a post like those others' he thought to himself.
It seemed inevitable that if neither party backed down a shootout would occur and he considered his options. He could toss a grenade in while they were unaware, but that could catch Ma in the blast if he's too close. He whispered in a low breath "C'mon Max, back off."

Max weighed his options carefully. Unsure of what to do. Vulpes spoke up while Max was still in thought, "You could also be a Frumentarii. You blend into the Mojave perfectly. A ranger, fighting the bear at every nook and crannie. Your anger boils against the NCR. At least with the Legion, you'll be rewarded for killing those degenerates. Your own slaves and your own personal legoon of troops at your command. Caesar would forgive you. I promise as the head Frumentarii. I will see to it."

Lucas sighed heavily, knowing he had to get involved in the situation before him. It wasn't exactly his speciality but he knew he'd have to try talk them down somehow. "Back away from him Max!" Shouted Lucas as he rose up from his position. He slowly advanced towards them and kept his rifle in his right arm down at his side. "Look, I've got no problem with you and your legion right now and I'd rather avoid an incident here. It won't turn out well for any of us. So here's what I'm proposing, you let Max, myself and our two companions who'll be along soon to pass through and I don't pull the pin on this grenade here." he offered as he revealed the grenade in his left hand, his finger in the loop of the pin.

"You're a fool, mercenary." Max than looked at Vulpes and spoke,"Tell Caesar I will be at the Fort in a month. We'll see everything through and through. Until then, I will be leaving with this profligate here." Max walked over and put his revolver to Luke's head. "Move, profligate, or I'll have you lashed onto a cross."
After shoving and pushing Luke to the outskirts of town, Max pulled his revolver back. "You are a idiot. You threatened the head Frumentarii of Caesar. You're now going to be marked unless he's in a good mood". Putting his revolver back in his trench coat, Max took off his helmet and sighed heavily.

"My apologies oh wise Centurion" retorted Lucas sarcastically. "It was either that or I leave you to go get yourself killed" he continued and then paused a moment. "You can't seriously be thinking of going back. I know a trap when I see one, and he's just trying to bring you back so Caesar can have you executed before his eyes. Or have you forgotten that you're a traitor to the Legion?"

The walk to Nipton was silent, the only real sounds coming from footsteps and the wind blowing dust across their path. The smoke seemed to grow ever more ominous as they approached. The crackle of fire became a constant with screams punctuating the air every so often. Occasionally a single shot would pierce the constant of the crackles and staccato screams, bringing everything to a rest only to rise again as the shot echoed away. Jason stopped in his tracks by the fourth shot. This was different than the gunfire he sometimes heard in Freeside when the Kings fought rabble or a couple of groups got into a minor shootout. This was execution.
Jason flexed his left hand nervously, cold sweat forming on his brow. "I... think we should avoid this Eddie," he stated. "Luke and Max would know better than to take on anyone who could hold down an entire town." He held his palm open at his side, fingers spread apart. This was a bad idea. He knew it.
Another shot punctuated the air. Jason's hand closed into a tight fist. He couldn't help these people. Whatever this was it was orchestrated chaos.
"Do you see them?" Jason asked, hoping they had stuck to the outskirts and were simply observing.

Eddie paled.
The sounds of agonised screams rose from the township ahead. The acrid scent of burning rubber.......and flesh. With that his normally affable personality was gone replaced with the gaunt mask of a young child who had witnessed a murder, their innocence being stolen away in an instant. He started forwards at double pace without thinking. It had to stop. Some one had to stop it. His hands were shaking, he could barely keep still of the tribal spear in his hands, threatening to slip his fingers and clatter to the floor. His nerve wouldn't hold if it did, he'd bolt, run, be gone the moment it touched the floor.
God it was heavy.
Ahead of them up the road now fully within view was Nipton. The massive plumes of smoke they'd seen earlier that day rose from three massive indistinguishable bonfires constructed in the centre of town. They belched columns of dark smoke into the air which seemed thick with a nauseating pall. Most of their view was obscured and lone double story building blocking line of sight to the main street while piled up in some makeshift barrier against the highway gangs were dozens of toppled pre-war vehicles of immense size.
He stopped. Petrified. Paralysed by his own fears. It was the Follower, he'd spoken, said something reasonable, despite his own pale features.
His voice sounded small, far away, as if it had retreated inside him. "I.... I....uh"
The smoke still rose from the town, the fires still raged, and the occasional gunshot that pierced what otherwise would have been silence sounded ominously echoing through the buildings to a sonorous pitch. Already carrion eaters were gathering, their black forms turning wide circles or perched idly on the spindly arms of long dead boughs. Their beady black eyes witness to whatever charnal slaughter was taking place in the streets that had seemed only a few days ago to be a bustling resort for the weary.
No more did he see the road ahead of them, the wastes slowly encroaching over the last and most recognisable remnants of an old, dead world. No more was it the guiding force in his life nor that which he had dedicated himself to so many months ago.
He clutched at his wrist. Clawing at it .Willing the hand to still the involuntary tremors that ran it's length. He had tears in his eyes he realised. Today had been too much. Hot tears he realised, as his breath caught, a mixture of outrage and grief as they rolled down his cheeks.
"...... Why?"
It was all he could manage.
Eddie flinched visibly as another shot rang out, it had been much closer than the others had been and it's mere sounding was a rebuke to the hopeful naivety he'd only minutes before been showing.
The Follower said something again. This time he recognised the names of the Ranger, Max, and the Mercenary, Lucas. They'd be nearby somewhere, probably crouched into the remains of one of the crumpled remains of the large vehicles or wedged between the cavernous arms of ravine just beyond the outskirts of the town. Comprised mainly of of the frames of pre-war buildings and the long exposed stretch of open ground outside a wire mesh enclosure containing half a dozen camper-trailers Nipton looked a skeletal husk of its former self.
"I.....I don't see them." He whispered quietly scanning the outskirts. "W-what......what if they got caught up in that? We should....."
What, help? No. Could he even help if he wanted to. The trembling wreck he was screamed internally threatening to overwhelm him. A canine found a tender section of his gum and tore into it, drawing blood, allowing him to momentarily reassert control over himself.
They'd not be able to help. Even if he wanted to they'd likely be walking to their deaths if they went through the township. No good would come of that he decided coldly. If they wanted to live they'd have to go skirt Nipton and hope to God to be quick on their feet and lucky beyond all hope.
When he spoke next he was surprised to have found his voice but it sounded foreign through pale lips. "I can't see them......w-we should leave. Quickly and quietly. Around the village, into the hills, back down the I-15 I don't care but we go now."

Jason nodded, though Eddie was too struck by the chaos to even notice. Jason fought back a tear. The chaos he heard, the wails of the damned were the kinds of things the Followers stood against, but there was nothing he could do about it. He almost wanted to simply turn around and just head back to the Mojave Outpost maybe even back to Sloan and past Quarry Junction. The growls of Deathclaws somehow seemed less menacing now. At least those abominations you expected such violence from. Only humans could wield weapons as they were here.
As Jason followed Eddie around the town, he was tempted to just activate his Stealth Boy and run, but he couldn't do that to Eddie. His hands shook more with every crouched step, with every scream, with every punctuating gunshot. They skirted far around the town, taking far longer than a trip through it would have, at one point crossing the railroad that ran north-south just east of the town.
The heat was oppressive and the smoke thick. Whoever was doing whatever they were doing were focused on their... task, if it could be called that. It was unlikely they would be seen and the heat of the Mojave tended to warp sights in the distance. By the time they reached the other side Jason was sweating far more than he ever had, not from the heat but from sheer terror. They climbed the hills rather than move into sight of the town, finding foot- and handholds wherever they could. He was by no means an expert climber, or hiker, but Jason quickly was coming to learn that fear granted a person a great deal of skills and abilities they thought they didn't have. He took the more well travelled Eddie's hand as he was pulled onto the ridge and immediately dropped low onto the rocky ground, preferring not to give the occupiers of the town something to see.
Jason looked back and caught the sight of a red flag. He couldn't see the symbol on it but he did not have to, he had heard the description enough times. The mere colour spoke volumes. The colour of blood. Caesar's Legion. Were they really so far beyond the river and the Dam?
"Keep moving," Jason said to himself. "Keep moving. Keep moving." He crawled away from the ledge, muttering the words to himself. He had been focusing so hard that it was only now that he noticed the pounding in his ears from the horrible migraine that had come upon him. He ignored it but still embraced it just a little. It meant he had not been shot.
They scrabbled down the hill back onto the road. "This is too much," he said releasing the breath he held for the hundredth time. He looked up at the sun, how long had they taken on their path? He didn't know nor did he care. They were alive but they couldn't stop yet. Not until they got as far away as possible. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry..." he said looking at the town and turning away to walk the road toward Novac. No one deserved that.
Up ahead two familiar silhouettes on the road. Max and Lucas?

The young surgeon grunted as he hefted Jason up on the rocky outcropping on the village outskirts keeping body pressed against the ground and looking down onto the village with bleary red eyes. The scene below was horrific and despite the distance at which the two had skirted the village he could not silence the screams of the gunshots as tiny armoured figures below went about their grisly business.
He turned away feeling disgusted with his own inaction and focused on the work at hand. It was so difficult to know what was right here. He'd preached naively about the merits of'trying' and 'caring' even if nobody else did however there pressed against the jutting earthen ledges he felt quite the hypocrite.
The pair crawled along the cliff faces keeping low and aiding one another to navigate the worst of the rough terrain. Though Eddie was arguably more well travelled than the Follower he was impressed by how well Jason kept pace struggling to clamber up onto the more difficult to reach edges but unwilling to stop. Above them the sun had reached its zenith and was beating down across the Mojave blurring their vision and baking the rocks beneath so that it burned painfully even through his clothing.
Eventually they reached the highest point of the cliff face they were working their way across and began their descent down towards the Nipton-Novac road taking additional care not to rush to quickly or expose themselves to the butcher's in the lower village.
Convinced that the they had managed to make it out of sight of the township Eddie slumped down against a nearby rock face with a haunted expression on his face.
Two figures stood out on the road ahead of them, their forms distorted by the heat waves. Finding a last reserve of strength Eddie picked himself up and approached them cautiously.

The events of Nipton were unpleasant to say the least. Lucas was fortunate to have been tempered by past experiences but he wondered how the other two would react. The Men tied to posts, Beheadings, a clear smell of burning flesh mixed with rubber in the air, it's a lot to take in. A question came to his mind, '[i]Why?[i]' What reason could the Legion have for committing a town to such a fate? Perhaps to instil fear.
Approaching from the direction of the now gone Nipton where two figures, one of which pulled ahead of the other. As it got closer he recognised it as Eddie, the Doctor. He picked himself up and saw that he was visibly horrified by the events in the town. "You look like you saw hell itself kid. And I suppose for you it must've been. We can't stop now, not with them so close. As soon as Jason catches up we should make up as much ground as we can."

Max put his helmet back on. Looking at the wandering tribal doctor, he looked pale. Almost dead. There was one more gunshot. Than a unnerving silence. The stench continued to fill the air around the town. The smoke was thick and almost blocked out the sun. Max was very used to the stench of burning flesh and smoke. Screams and gunshots also meant little to him.

"No one deserved that....." The youth whispered as he approached the two figures. His voice was hoarse and his cheeks damp.
Skirting around the township had affected him far more deeply that he was ready to admit and the scenes from below as they had made their desperate climb were etched into his mind as haunting memories that would trouble him for many weeks in the quiet hours of the night. No amount of alcohol, no drug, no woman would blot that out. The screaming had stopped and a silence of the worst kind had fallen over the Mojave as it's impassivity to the suffering of it's inhabitants seemed to suffuse the air quieting the cawing of the carrion eaters and leaving the four travellers with the horrific task of introspection.
He didn't stop when he reached the Ranger and Lucas. Instead he kept going, using the butt of the spear to support his weight on shaky legs and continue up the winding asphalt into the rough landscape beyond.

He confronted him "You think this **** is justified? Are you trying to tell me that those people deserved that fate? A whole town of men, women and children murdered? What about your bullshit about protecting the innocent, where the **** is your damned moralising now?"

When Eddie found the will to speak his words were half hearted shadows of what he truly wanted to say. "It doesn't matter.... this NCR-Legion nonsense..... who cares?"
He wanted to scream at the Ranger for moralising the massacre using the Lord's name, he wanted to tell him that this talk of the Legion and the NCR was nothing my self serving ideological nonsense that he was hiding behind, remind the Ranger that behind those faceless ideals were people who were neither good not bad, just struggling. But the whole exercise seemed pointless after what he had just seen. What could a vagrant surgeon from the far East Coast possibly say in the face of such mindless violence.

Jason was in a trance now. He walked along the road, eyes glassed, head pounding. He shook with every step. Since he left Sloan he had been unable to help anyone. He was sweating. The oppressive heat, the overbearing stress. It beat on his shoulders, threatening to push him to his knees, make him give up. He trudged on, following the road. He had to get home, back to Freeside. Julie would have an answer, one that he could believe. He hoped.
"You could have helped them," the voice stated, piercing through the migraine.
"How?" Jason muttered.
"You could have helped them."
"How!?" Jason screamed, breaking the silence of the valley. "I couldn't help them... You're lying..." Jason was on his knees now. How could he help them? Legion would have slaughtered him as they did so many others. They were the kind of people the Followers resented, bullies existing and acting purely to get their way.
Jason rose, he had no answer. Ahead the others were arguing. Jason couldn't quite hear what they were saying.
"Followers of the Apocalypse."
Jason for a brief moment wasn't quite sure what the voice meant, but it dawned on him slowly. They followed NCR's apocalypse. The result of their bloated expansion. Legion was no better were they? Simply another group seeking expansion and domination. Just another apocalypse to follow.
"They are all cancer..." Jason said rising to his feet. He stumbled on, past the others. "All cancer..."
"Yes... All cancer."

Max began to leave, heading down the road to Novac. He couldn't care less if they followed. Better if they would let the Legion nail them to a cross. "Weak, dissolute, unresolved". Max said that to the two as he began to leave.

Seven Hundred and Fifty Caps!
Despite his dour mood the promise of a third of such a large bounty of the precious wasteland currency was an assault to his senses that he was not prepared for, nor was the rebuke the Ranger, or Legionaire he was no longer sure, offered him as he dropped the pouch. Eddie dismissed the notion that Max had any grounds upon which to complain, the terms of their agreement back in the bar in Goodsprings having been fulfilled completely. The surgeon had both made use of his knowledge to remove a bullet in the man's leg and escorted him to the far side of Nipton.
And for his trouble two hundred and fifty caps, so many he considered testing the pouches weight. They came at a steep price though. Two hundred and fifty would be enough to replenish his medical supplies in their entirety if he skimped on food and rearming himself.
He loathed to admit it but as much as he didn't want to see the Ranger again he felt thanks was in order, and honestly felt as though eventually they would cross paths again. "I'd best be prepared" He mumbled.
He rose slowly, using his knees to steady himself. He tossed the caps to Lucas. "Until we get a chance to split the shares they're likely safest with you...... not much I could do if you decided to 'take' them by force either-."
He cut of abruptly. Behind them Jason had begun to behave erratically. He was mumbling something under his breath, clutching at his head. He suddenly started screaming causing Eddie to start suddenly before stumbling past them and down the road towards Novac. The surgeon gave Lucas a concerned glance before setting off after the Follower.
"Hey Pal!" He said as he caught up with the other Doctor. "Joshua....you all right. Do we need to stop or something?"

Jason stopped, looked at Eddie or maybe through him. His eyes were glazed over and there was a sporadic twitch in his left hand. "They're cancer Eddie... Bloated, growing... Disgusting... Undeserving of our help. They should be made to bleed." Jason's face twisted in disgust. He blinked a few times. His eyes came back, focused on Eddie, but his hand continued to twitch slightly. He continued to speak, his voice calmer, the anger still there but the tranquility of revelation lined his speech. "People like that don't deserve a second chance."
He looked down at the ground for a few seconds. Saying it out loud eased the burden a little but it did little for him, knowing there was still nothing he could have done. He remembered the tin of Mentats and reached for it in his jacket pocket. Removing it, he looked inside. Hopefully someone in Novac had some to sell. He swallowed one. It would be a short while before it took effect.
"Can't stop," Jason said, continuing along the road toward Novac.

Payment from the Ranger was unexpected, Lucas assumed that the offer no longer stood once Max had walked out of the saloon back in Goodsprings. Still, he'd accept the caps regardless. He caught the bag from Eddie as he tossed it, it was a hefty bag. It ought to be if it contains 750 caps. Thinking about what he'd do in Vegas brought a smile to his face, gambling, drinking, getting a new weapon.
Somewhat absent minded as his attention was grabbed by Jason he responded. "No need to worry about that..." The follower was acting rather strangely. He followed Eddie as he went to check on him and caught the last half of the conversation. "As loopy as he is, we should try put as much distance between us and legion as we can."

He nodded sharply dropping back a few paces behind the ailing Follower with a crooked frown. "I don't want to be caught so close to town with those freaks down there."
He realised the events of their circumvention of Nipton had been traumatic. Though his face remained pale and drawn except for the angry red circles around his eyes he remained more or less lucid and capable of pragmatic thought, Jason on the other hand seemed to have become slightly unhinged though had recovered slightly when he'd be able to take on of the small tablets he usually carried with him.
[Medicine 50, PERCEPTION FAILED] Perhaps they were anti-psychotics of some kind.
As they walked he turned to Lucas really taking a look at the mercenary for the first time since the bar in Goodsprings. He was what Eddie would have called a 'Hard Man', a hardbitten waster who claimed to be from somewhere out further West in California. Between the wide brim of his hat and the reflective surfaces of his Authority Glasses he truly was an intimidating person, that wasn't even accounting for the Old World technology he carried in a sling on his back.
" Lucas I want to get as far away from Nipton as we can go today." He said quietly, recalling the details of his own trip through the area just a few days prior. His spear tapping against the crumbling roadway in rhythmic beats. "There was an armed encampment not too far from Novac as I recall, tough looking guys, practically a fortress, but that might be out of our reach before nightfall. There was also what looked to be farm....though it had watch towers and a large shack at the centre......What's our play?"

None of the three where the same after Nipton, but it was clear Jason was the worst affected. It seemed like he had lost his mind entirely, must've been his first time seeing something like that. Eddie was clearly traumatised as well, but managed to keep his head on him. Against his will, he recounted the first time he saw the effects of a raid. It was Junktown, it wasn't destroyed but it was hit hard. Men were killed, women were abducted...Eddie broke his line of though before he could dwell too long
Before responding he looked ahead into the distance, there seemed to be a large canyon ahead. Prime spot for ambushing he thought. "Well, looks like we'll have to go through that canyon ahead. If we take the low road we'd do well to keep our wits about us. Or we could climb the side, though that'd slow us down a fair bit. If your up for it we could press on through the night and head for that encampment you mentioned. If not then it's that farm. Looks like those options pair up, over the side and hit the ranch or straight through and make as much distance as we can. I'd be wary of a canyon like that so I reckon the first choice would be the way to go. Unless you'd prefer the other."

"Novac then if you're asking me.....but then we travel as fast as the slowest member. I'm concerned about Jason. He doesn't seem..... right any more. If he does has psychiatric issues then perhaps time in a settlement will allow him to reassert control over himself."

As Max walked along the train track heading North, he made it his goal to get to Novac. From there, he would make it to Nelson, and than to Cottowood cove. Dead Sea would be sure to help him. After a couple of minutes, he started to think back to the three. Their chance of survival was against them without his guidance. But he didn't care to help those that lacked resolve. That hinge on pre-war medicine for strength. They were dissolute...but the follower was not a part of any of it. The tribal was too far out and too new to the Mojave to be a part of any of it. But the Mercenary, he held disdain for him. Ignorant, self absorbed, greedy. Lives mean little to him for the right price. Max knew that group will be broken by the Mojave. A shame he had to lose money over a lost cause.

Jason's pace was not leisurely, settling just below a brisk walk, but his steps were even, deliberate, almost trance-like as he walked along the road, guided by the others. Every now and then his thoughts would become coherent again only to be shattered a second later by the memory of Nipton. At one point he became coherent enough to know that they would pass that Ranger Station just after the sun set, with Novac barely maybe an hour and a half after that, provided that nothing stopped them. After the thought was finished the screams overwhelmed him again and he shut out everything once again.
"Can't stop..." he muttered as he continued walking.
