As Max walked back, he noticed how Lucas put his glasses on. "Besides plaguing us with the stench of urine, he seems to have stabilized. Not sure about the tribal though. He seems ornery enough to cut his losses, kill the doctor and run... I just realized, I never gave you my name, have I?"

Lucas let out a light chuckle at the Rangers comments about the Doctor before answering the Ranger's question. "Nope, don't reckon you did. I ain't in the habit of asking, lotta folks I meet don't want people knowing too much about them. That or they give a different name wherever they go. Still, if you'd like to oblige me feel free."

Chmabers shrugged.
"He seems more or less harmless to me as well." He admitted leaning against the side of the shack running a hand through his dishevelled hair to straighten it. "Seems our guest has a soft spot in him for pre-war books. Did little else but read."
Stifling a yawn he squinted southwards following the asphalt as far as could be seen shivering as the cool morning air touched his exposed skin. A slight smile coloured his features as the Ranger broke character for a brief moment abandoning the sanctimonious metaphor laden speech and using something more informal. Had he not known any better be might have assumed this was the man's typical manner of speech.
Suddenly the door opened and the Ranger strode out in the morning air, the shack door obscuring the Abbey member from sight. Max had obviously not been paying attention when he exited the shack and began speaking about him oblivious to his presence behind the door of the shack that had just opened. Not a morning person, he thought to himself, best I let it go than make something of it.
"Hmph. Here I was thinking I was a Good Natured and well adjusted wasteland surgeon. I've still apparently have a lot to learn" He stated loudly from behind the door, a note of humour in his voice.

"Fair enough. Names mean little in these times." Max noticed a pile of wood on top of a old tire. After a moment of kindling with a lighter he picked up from a Vegas novelty shop, the makeshift camp fire started burning. Max than started to cook the gecko meat.
"Lucas, go into my dufflebag and retrieve me my 2 large iron rod prongs along the length of the bag. Take anything else and I'll cut off your small finger. This meat is difficult to handle not to get dirty".

Jason looked at the group. The ranger and the wanderer were outside. The gunshots that he had heard were most likely related to the Gecko that the man was carrying with him. Jason chewed some more on the Brahmin jerky; someday he had to learn how to properly cook for himself instead of relying on the food of others.
The two men were talking, seemingly about their names. They're travelling together and haven't even told each other their names? Was this normal?
"I assume I'm travelling with you?" he asked none of them in particular, or all of them at once.
Jason squinted a little in the morning light as he looked south down the I-15 toward Primm. At the moment it was out of view. He continued to chew on his jerky and took a sip of water from his canteen as he waited for an answer and for the ranger to cook the Gecko meat.

"You think me a common thief? I am hurt, truly." Lucas delivered in a sarcastic tone. Returning to the shack he accessed the Rangers bag, considering a moment inspecting its contents to learn more about him. Pushing the thought out of his head he retrieved the rods and returned them to the Ranger with nothing more than a grunt.

Jason considered the ranger's offer and for a brief moment the thought of activating his Stealth Boy and walking away crossed his mind. However that would, on some level, make him irresponsible since he could offer some assistance to these people. He hoped he wouldn't regret the decision.

Chambers looked up from his Gecko Steak his interest piqued. He'd been eating in silence, his expression glum, less so brooding about what the Ranger had said and more about being ignored completely. Still the words from the newest member of their company seemed reassuring enough and the possibility of sharing a conversation with another trained doctor would be very informative.
"Heya pal we'll get on fine then. You can call me Eddie Chambers....all of you can. It's not my real name but it's what the chose to call me in the Abbey." He said shuffling closer to the small fire holding out a hand. "Sorry about at that.......unpleasantness before. Just a bad habit from the road. I mean an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure right?"

As the group set off, They passed a gas station infested with radscorpions. The small group made quick work of them and managed to scavenge a few boxes of cram, Salisbury steak, chewing gum and assorted ammunition. Once they set out, they all knew they would have to stop at the Mojave outpost to acquire more supplies and sell off other things.
"That statue. A spit in my face. A memorial to where the desert rangers died. A beacon to the legion of weakness. Of another lost flag. Rolled over by the bear. Its claw marked into the Mojave now. It makes me sick to my stomach". The group than started to walk up the long 15 to the Mojave outpost. And Max having to deal with the frustration and disgust of such a(n) atrocity and the people there that raised it.

"Is it really necessary that we stop here" said Lucas questioning why the group went out of their way instead of heading straight to Nipton. He'd come through here just a few days ago and wasn't keen on being back. He looked at the statue as the Ranger criticised it. 'Could just built a **** and make the same statement' he thought to himself. The caravans waiting to get through seemed to be much greater in number than when he'd passed earlier. He approached Max "You got a score to settle here?"

Jason looked to the tribal who introduced himself as Eddie Chambers.
"Jason Carter," he introduced himself. "If you're not careful the side effects from the prevention can cause a pound of another problem entirely," Jason stated a little too knowledgeable about the idea himself.
Jason looked at the ranger. The man was a little cold, even for one of those legends he heard so much about. Had something happened to make this man so or was that simply how he was?
He was surprised when they didn't make the stop at Primm, but Jason was unwilling to risk a confrontation with the ranger who had seen fit to put a knife to his throat the night before. The place looked a little off as they passed around it. The streets were empty, a fact that unnerved him. Had something happened?
The Mojave Outpost. Jason had never really seen it. The large statues he had seen in the distance turned out to be that of an NCR Ranger shaking hands with a Desert Ranger. The ranger himself seemed a little upset about it. With the negative ideas about it in his head from the ranger, Jason realised quickly that it was enough to steel to build a shelter or two for people who might need it. Even now in the setting sun, the long shadow cast by it provided quite a reprieve from the oppressive heat.
"If you don't mind I would like to check for some more medical supplies, maybe some raw materials."
The caravans were backed up. Jason didn't have a great deal of caps, but he wondered if he could convince one of the caravan merchants to part with some supplies cheaply since they didn't seem to be able to move on. Some sales are better than no sales right? He might have to look into one of the books or magazines he carried to come up with a good strategy to approach this.

Eddie had spent a great deal of time picking through the remains of the abandoned gas station they'd located just off of the I-15 pawing through the remains of an Old World convenience store that was the Nipton Road Rest Stop looking for anything valuable that stood out to him.
They'd initially had some trouble wresting control of the blasted ruins back from the radscorpions that had infested them however the mutants had soon be taken care of. He'd not even needed the .357 for that blinding one with a throwing knife before running his spear through the chitinous shell. He was careful to avoid the largest of the mob weaving through the scuttling limbs and threatening stingers crippling any limbs that came into his spears range.
He smiled to himself as he pushed a heavy steel door one, the rusted hinges groaning with effort. Two dead and not a single shell wasted. He was looking for the stores first aid kit. Perhaps in all the time travellers had passed along the I-15 few had dared brave the rest-stop long enough to ransack it.
As it turned out someone had. The valuable supplies were missing and only a few lengths of surgical tubing, an ancient blood pack, and a few small empty syringes still in their sealed packaging. He also made sure to cut the poison glands our of the dead radscorpions storing them as well as they either proved effective in crafting antivenom solutions or at securing him dinner.
Content that he had what he needed Chambers caught up with the rest of he group at the base of the highway leading up to the Mojave Outpost somewhat astounded at the sight of the Ranger statue. He was when Max began to speak bitterly of the effigy but didn't show it.
"We going on up or pushing East?" He asked, keen to move on, a frown appearing on his face as an altogether too familiar smell reached his nostrils. " We've barely covered any miles at all today and I don't fancy standing in Brahmin dung for another afternoon."

After an hour, Max walked away from the roof of the building silent. Still wearing his helmet, his eyes more lifeless than usual. He walked into the bar and noticed Eddie and Jason at the bar but Luke was no where to be seen.
"Where is the Mercenary, Eddie? We're leaving. I'm leaving. Must let history keep or I will be condemned to repeat it. The desert rangers are now rolling in their Mojave graves and I must leave before I come to exact revenge."

"Not sure Ranger Rick." He replied jingling a small pouch with caps. "Haven't seen him since you went up on the roof. Been in the hills looking for Bark Scorpions and talking with the caravanners for the most part. Only just got here myself."
He'd not had any Nightstalker Blood on him at the time so the glands did little enough for him other than fetch a handful of caps, most of which he'd then spent again on a pair of stimpacks and a few dosages of Rad-X. What few caps remained would have to suffice until he could find another pre-war sight to scavenge.
He'd kept one of the glands though and spent a good twenty minutes just off the path near to where the lines of merchants were starting to form collecting venom from the immature Bark Scorpions eventually amassing enough to create a small vial of Silver Sting poison. He'd then joined a pair of merchants around their small hot plate and brewed up the concoction chatting amicably with them.

Eddie glanced around looking for Jason, unsure if the man was even there. He was continually perplexed by the Ranger's strange behaviour. Gruff and philosophical as he was it was slowly becoming more obvious that the fellow was more than capable and comfortable alone on the open range albeit poorly suited for travelling with companions.
"Jason!" He called tentatively. "We'd best get along.... before he kills someone."
He caught up with the Ranger outside catching up with the armoured man quickly.

Jason looked at the ranger as he spoke - Max was it? What books had this man's mind consumed that made him speak the way he did? Jason wondered as the man walked off.
After an inquiry to one of the patrolling soldiers Jason found his way to what was the general store of the area though it also served as the barracks and bar. Jason was not the type to drink, though whiskey and vodka could make for some pretty good impromptu disinfectants. After a few minutes of haggling Jason managed to get some more Brahmin jerky, some trail mix and a bag of medical supplies.
Sitting there, Jason realised he had not actually taken a look at the laser pistol that was supposed to protect him for a while. He took a seat at a table to the side and placed the weapon there. After rooting around for his smaller tools he began inspecting it. The lenses and focusing crystals were fine, but he still made sure they were fixed firmly in place. Everything else seemed to be set in place and calibrated properly, though he could not be sure unless he fired the weapon.
He then pulled out the book he had been reading and continued. Page 160.
He was so focused on reading that he barely noticed the ranger coming in seeking to leave the Mojave Outpost already. Wouldn't it make sense for them to stay the night? It would most definitely be night before they reached Nipton.
Jason rose from his seat as Eddie called him. "I'd rather he didn't," Jason responded to Eddie's statement.

When Max left to speak to Ghost, Lucas made his way to the barracks to speak with Knight. He walked up to him and without looking up he spoke in a clearly bored voice. "Caravan, courier..." "We been through this already. Mercenary" replied Lucas cutting him off. "Couriers, you had any come in that are headed west?" Knight looked up at him for the first time "It's not customary for me to details of who passes through to a civilian." "Look Knight, this is important. I need this letter delivered." Knight stayed silent for a while before letting out a sigh. "Very well. There's one by the gate about to leave, waiting on some final paperwork. Scar across his nose."
Lucas thanked the Major and left promptly to find this courier that Knight had described. It didn't take long, the scar was very distinctive. "Courier! You're headed west correct? I need you to deliver a letter to a man in Junktown." Slowly, the courier returned his gaze "Sorry mate, that's a bit out of my way." Hearing that, Lucas tossed a pouch of caps to him. The courier weighed it to get an idea of how much it held. "That'll do it, who's the guy?" "Dark skinned, severe burn scars across the left half of his face. Usually wears a suit and hangs out at Gizmo's casino. Goes by the name of Marshall." "Consider it done friend." as Lucas finished his description he had already begun to leave. He made his way back to the the statue under the shade.

History. Jason turned the singular word over in his head a few times.
Post traumatic stress perhaps? No he didn't seem to suffer any of the symptoms, except maybe being a little jumpy. Perhaps he simply holds some grudge, an object or event over which he obsesses? It was becoming clear the man wasn't really a ranger, or at least an NCR ranger as Jason knew them to be. The man was... volatile, was the first word that came to mind. The next word was 'vindictive'.
Jason turned his head around looking for the mercenary, Lucas. Were they going to leave him behind? Jason pushed up his glasses once again.

History.
Eddies jaw dropped as the Ranger stalked off. It more or less told him nothing that he probably couldn't have already guessed. The bitterness in his voice was enough to let him know not to dawdle.
He caught sight of Lucas making his way back to the road, Laser Rifle held at the ready before him so that the merchants would know to make way. Jason on the other hand appeared lost until Eddie tapped him on the shoulder pointing out the mercenary picking his way towards the Ranger.
" It will be soon....." He said off handedly grinding the butt of his spear into the dirt by the road side offering the Follower a cynical grin.
"Seems we're off for a little tumble down towards Nipton, stupid call really but our Ranger's got some radroach on his back as sure as you have your's...and it apparently is messing him up more than he'll admit. Except unlike you and me he's not smart enough to rationalise it out as one ****** up thing in a long a series of ****** up things, and unlike you he's just hard enough that he can try to live through it without screaming his lungs bloody. "I suppose," Jason stated. "I can't say I like admitting it but he needs an outlet. The unfortunate part is the only outlet for the way he's behaving might be shooting a definitive enemy." Jason frowned. It was a hypothesis much like the ones he was trained to make, but he didn't like making it. It was as though he was asking for trouble just so the ranger might have a way to vent. He just hoped that whoever got in the ranger's way wasn't an innocent.
He followed on behind them as they made their way down the hill and onto the road towards Nipton with Eddie. The moon was visible now and a coyote howled in the distance. A minute later another one howled in response.
Jason sighed. "I really hope this guy doesn't get me killed," he said quietly. He checked the time on the handheld Pip-Boy. Time for another Mentat.

Max turned on his night vision and kept walking down the road. Nipton was his next stop. Either he would get there or he would go back and die killing those that killed his flag. NCR to him was just another plague that needed to be dealt with and exterminated.
Max kept his bowie knife and revolver close at hand. He had little trust to those that weren't Mojave native. Having enough practice fighting Legionaires in knife fights and chem fiends in gun fights, he understood how to catch an enemy off guard.
Seeing the three catch up to him, he realized that they needed him for their own selfish needs. He knew it would be easier for them to just shoot him in his back and loot him but he knows that would mean their deaths in the long run. They had not truly made their acquaintance with a Prime Legionaire or Decanus looking for a worthy opponent or another slave.
While on the road to nipton, he knew he was a ways ahead of the group. Either he was moving too fast or they were moving slowly for a reason. He knew he would have to take out what was in his dufflebag eventually. He began to face little option but to be better armed. His death was speeding up, though he wasn't sure of which direction.

Jason winced a little as he walked along. He was getting a headache. How? he wondered Was it because he had not slept the night before? He had taken the Mentat hat should stop it from coming on right? Still he kept pace fighting through it. Hopefully they would reach Nipton and he could finally take a break in the town, if he could rent a room to sleep in without being solicited by someone.
There was chittering off to his left as they walked down the road. Ants? He had remembered seeing a colony in the old dried up lake bed. The chittering was distant so he doubted they would be a problem.
"He's going to kill you, you know." Jason's heart skipped a beat as the voice entered his head and he almost tripped on the road. The Mentats weren't working. He fumbled for the tin in his jacket and swallowed. "Can't shut me out forever," the voice stated mockingly.
Ahead of the ranger Jason thought he saw something by an abandoned destroyed building at the side of the road in the moonlight; the silhouette of a person ducking behind the wall. Was it a trick of the light or his mind? Visual hallucinations were not a symptom of his.

As the night wore on it was becoming increasingly apparent to Eddie that their party would not be stopping until they reached the outskirts of Nipton, a trip that we was becoming convinced would take the better part of the night at their current pace. Ahead of them, barely visible apart from the glow his helmets eyes, the ranger stalked at a pace Chamber's was pretty sure he could match having the distinct advantage of no encumbrance from either armour nor a heavy pack.
That being said he had little desire to walk in silence behind a man who barely spared him a passing thought. Despite this he felt compelled to at least hear what the Ranger had to say....if he had anything to say.
"I'm going to try and get a read on our friend up there." He said pointing before jogging up the road.
Beside the road was the crumbling ruins of a small two storey building he'd travelled past on his journey to Goodsprings, thanking Trudy for advising him not to travel north from the small township and instead skirt around the more dangerous central regions of the wastes. The night seemed calm and placid but for the chattering of a small ant colony off to their left in the salt pans of the Dry Lake and even the air seemed calm with a small breeze barely kicking up any dust from the road.
Perhaps it was because he was already on edge or perhaps it was something on the air, Eddie still wouldn't know quite what it was later, but several day old memory was recalled into his mind with a vivid clarity.
[Survival 30] A dry wind, sun beating down upon his head, carrion eaters circling o'er head, the Outpost nothing but faint lines on an unforgiving horizon, he faint smell of mesquite suffusing the air mixed with something earthy. Something smoky. Intimately familiar. The barely smouldering remains of a hastily kicked out campfire.
Something that ultimately would not have been out of the ordinary in any other circumstance, on any other road. Except this road led nowhere now. Nipton was dead, he knew that and the nearest settlement he'd encountered was Novac some miles far North. The building itself was isolated, the landscape around it exposed and flanked by two Dry Lakes, cut through by a single arterial road.
He kept his pace covering ground, slowing would let anyone watching know he might suspect an ambush. Eyes scanning the crumbling walls for signs of movement flicking occasionally back to the Ranger who seemed to lost in his own musings. The last few meters between him and the Ranger were open group, solid tar seal with good footing. His hand behind his back where he tried to wave frantically warning the two lagging behind him of his suspicions then dropped to the .357 concealed in his waist band, he struggled to loosen it.
His pace slowed but a moment.......all hell broke loose.

Realizing what was happening, Max pulled out two concealed ranger sequoia's he had hidden in his trench coat and quickly took a shot at a raider charging him with a lead pipe. He blew out a chunk of his brain but got shot in the leg by a .38 caliber revolver. Fumbling over, he kept shooting at the light flashes' sources. Than he also realized laser beams were being blasted at the raiders.....or from the raiders. Too much was occurring and Max's mind was too bent on revenge to care about raiders.

Jason fell to the ground as Eddie tried to wave him and the mercenary back. He picked a direction away from the oncoming fire toward the other destroyed building across the road from the one the raiders or bandits or whatever they were were pouring out of. A bullet impacted the wall as he scrambled over it.
Unfortunately no ambush would be complete without someone coming from a different angle and Jason had the misfortune of running into that someone. The raider almost seemed surprised to see someone come scrambling over the wall so suddenly but not surprised enough as he raised his 9mm pistol to shoot.
Jason's hand clutched a piece of rubble and he threw it. There was a thump as it connected. The man shouted, cursed and raised the pistol again. Jason threw another rock. This one was lucky enough to knock the gun out of his hand. The man cursed as it fell into the shadow of a wall, drawing his knife to attack.
