Lucas finally arrived at the Mojave Outpost. He came in west across the Long 15 working as a bodyguard for a caravan. It was dull work, and he avoided it when he could, but he was headed east anyway for New Vegas looking for work. Hitman, Hired gun, Mercenary, even Assassin are all terms used to describe him at some point. As long as the caps were good he'd take the job. After hitting the Outpost he stayed a while in the bar waiting for his papers to clear, 'God damn bureaucracy' he thought to himself as he listened to some woman babble on about her troubles to a bottle of whiskey.
Once he was cleared through he made his way out and headed north, to New Vegas. The sun was beating down hard, making him seat under his reinforced leather. His face was kept shaded by his hat, similar to the ones the Mojave Rangers wore but without the insignia, and his eyes by the "authority" sunglasses. Along the road he saw a someone brandishing a tire iron rushing at him. Not taking any chances he raised his Laser Rifle and took aim. Three shots is all it took for them to fall down. He got closer and looted the body, turned out to be a fairly young man who took up raiding travellers judging from what he was wearing. Didn't have anything useful on him other than a few caps.
Eventually Lucas came across a little town called Goodsprings. A fine enough place to rest before continuing north, he headed into the Prospector Saloon sharing a "Good Day" with the ol' fella sitting out front. He walked slowly into the building with all his weapons clearly visible. Rifle slung across his back, 9mm Pistol holstered on his hip combat knife on his thigh and two grenades dangling from his belt. He was actually very poor with the knife, but it was better than a bare fist. He took a seat, threw a couple caps on the counter and asked Trudy for the hardest stuff she had.
He'd taken notice of two others, one in a doctors garb and another looking like he was trying to drown his sorrows, like that woman in the Outpost. He had little patience for people like that so he spoke up while putting his glasses and hat on the counter revealing his short hair and tanned skin. "There's much quicker ways of killing yourself. I could give you a hand with it if you want."

Lucas' request was fulfilled by some scotch. He'd poured it into a glass as the man responded to him and took a swig of the drink, then let out a low chuckle at the end of the other's sentence "Heh, no, I don't work with NCR right now, and never did officially." He turned his head to take a look, trademark trench coat. Likely no love for NCR in him. "Names Lucas Grey. Call me Lucas, Luke, Grey, Fool with the laser rile, or anything else you'd prefer. But something tells me you're not just looking for a name." He paused a moment to take another drink. "Call me a mercenary."

Lucas sat the by his drink as the other two men carried the conversation, though his short temper showed during Max's self-righteous nonsense when he slammed his fist on the desk and stood up to face him. "Listen mate, there's no innocents out here and it's kill or be killed. Anyone you've shot is no different from anyone I have, someone who pissed off enough people to have a target on them, so don't sell me your bullshit." Sitting back down slightly calmer, though still with a hint of annoyance in his voice he continued. "Now, as for your request, I'm headed the opposite direction to New Vegas and I'm not keen on taking the long way around. Unless you give me a pretty good reason why I shouldn't head north you're on your own."

'Cazadors? Deathclaws? Bollocks.' images of the two creatures swirled through Lucas' mind after the Ranger spoke of them. That's gone and mucked up his plans, if he'd known there was Deathclaws this way he'd never have headed up this way. He'd barely noticed the other two leave as he tried to think of a way to continue north. He'd never take him in a straight fight. Sneak past? he thought, 'No. Those deathclaws would find him easily. **** it, south it is' he resigned himself to the idea, finished his drink and walked out of the saloon, donning his hat again.
He travelled to the nearby general store hoping to pick up some water and ammunition. He inspected what he had along the way, a few hundred caps, plenty for the time being. Enough cells for probably around 50 shots and nearly 100 9mm bullets. Some boxes of Cram, food wasn't too bad, it could often be hunted. The water was the more pressing matter, only two bottles were left. As he entered the store he saw him again, the Ranger. "Ranger, if what you said is true then it looks like I'm headed through Nipton anyway."

"As you say Ranger" replied Lucas as the other left. He purchased three bottles of water from Chet, brining his count up to 5. He'll be thirsty over the journey but rationing should give him enough, hopefully picking up more in Primm. He'd headed back to the saloon and rented a bed for the night.
He'd washed his face in the morning using the sink after another restless night, dark patches clear under his eyes. He prepared himself for the journey. Walking out he saw the Ranger, giving him a short nod but staying silent, waiting for the third. Eventually the Surgeon showed up spear in hand and throwing knives at the hip, it was the first time Lucas got a proper look at him. [Perception]'Hmm, looks like he could be tribal. Or just looted that stuff' he thought to himself as he approached.
As with the others, he was distracted by the man running towards them. Instinctively he aimed his rifle, he was ready to take a shot if he started looking aggressive but he lowered the gun when the Ranger got in the way and approached the man. He stayed behind the others while the spoke to the man, still wary of him. As the Ranger left Lucas moved closer to take his place, keeping an eye out in case any one else came running brandishing a gun.
It was amusing, the Ranger had given a speech about protecting innocents and just left this one in the care of the Surgeon. He left him to treat the Caravanner until he was addressed directly. "The Ranger? Alright Doc." Lucas headed out the way the Ranger left and encountered him as he was returning. "Ranger, the Doc says to give these to you, tells me you'd know what to do with them. Don't ask me what for."

The words from the Ranger after 'tribes' was mostly nonsense to Lucas. Seemed like he was talking about some sort of poison, or, given the injured man, a remedy. Regardless it was beyond his own knowledge. Of course with the Rangers ramblings he managed to slip in yet another remark against the NCR. The way he goes on about them would make a man think they were the second apocalypse if they didn't know better. The Doc arrived from treating the stranger shortly after followed by another exchange between the two which Lucas interrupted "Don't mean to interrupt your ramblings Ranger, but unless there's any more business to clear up here I think it's time we headed" Travelling with those two seemed like it'd end up with guns pointed at each other before long. Beats a boring journey at least.

"Hmpf, yeah I've got a few tales alright." Replied Lucas, pausing a moment to determine whether he should continue. He decided he would, and thought briefly of what he should tell the Doctor about. He's been to a lot of places, the Bonyard, The Hub, Shady Sands, Vault city, but above all the one that gave him the most was New Reno.
"You ever heard of New Reno? It's a ways north west of here. A beacon of debauchery, nearly everyone there has a gun and an addiction. Place is run by crime families, you **** off the wrong people without getting on someone important's good side you're likely to wind up strung up to a post. Nothin' but gambling, drinking, crimes and whores. Great place all 'round."
"So these crime families, there's four of them, I wound up doing a bunch of work for the Bishops, wanted to try stop the Wrights from taking power in the city after they wrangled it from the Salvatores. In order to do that, they had to order outside help to do a few jobs and not leave a trail back to them. That's where I came in. They wanted me to take out one of their top enforces, disintegrate him completely. Now, the beauty of it is the Salvatores love their lasers. Anyone who sees a pile of ash that used to be human are likely to put the blame on them."
"I followed this guy around town, found out his patterns and knew when he'd be vulnerable. I called in a favour and had a guy stall him, give him this bullshit about having information on the Bishop's future plans. He lured him away while he was on his way to a brothel and right into my sights. Put about 6 shots into the poor bastard, wound more ash than corpse."
"Word got out soon after when he never returned to the Wrights. They sent out some people looking for them and found the ash, not long after I heard the Salvatores got hit pretty badly. The Bishops were very grateful, so much so that Mr Bishop himself gave me my rewards. A pile of caps and free access to their Brothels for a week, and some of those whores are bloody good. He also tells me why the Wrights were so mad, turns out everyone in the family is just that, actual blood relatives."
"Somehow the Wrights found out the Salvatores weren't responsible. Probably kidnapped a few goons and beat them within an inch of their life. So they hit a brothel. A brothel I happened to be 'visiting' at the time. Bullets started flying, and as soon as they saw my laser flashes they knew I was the hitman. They targeted me, tried taking me out, so I made my way out the back door and covered my tracks with landmines, while of course helping the whores that were around at the time. Damn near brought the building down on them."
"After that incident I skipped town and headed south, as much as I liked Reno the Wrights probably would've followed up on that little attack of theirs."

Lucas walked into the shack along with the others, it'd be cramped but it was decent shelter. He noticed Max at the Lockers and came across a locked one. [Lockpick 34] "Let me take a look at that" he said as he pulled a bobbypin out of his pocket and got to work on the lock.
[Friend of the Night] "I may not have that fancy helmet of yours Ranger, but these eyes o' mine do a decent job at night. Let me know if you need some shut eye." Lucas suspected that the Ranger didn't trust him and wanted to keep an eye on him. Regardless he rolled out one of the bags and lay down not actually expecting to get much sleep. It was rare that he slept through a night without knocking himself out with alcohol. Nevertheless he tried, all the while keeping his 9mm within reach should anything go awry.

Slowly, Lucas holstered the pistol and eased up slightly. "So you weren't bullshitting about those deathclaws after all? Suppose I owe you one on that." He leaned against the wall of the shack whilst Max spoke further to the newcomer. Once he was finished he grabbed his laser rifle and headed for the door. "I ain't getting any sleep tonight so I might as well play lookout. You two get some sleep, or don't." and with those words Lucas exited the shack and sat down to keep an eye out.

The night was long and silent. The only sounds Lucas heard was the wind and tumbleweed, broken once by a short shoot out to the south. He'd considered checking it out but let them be when it was clear it presented no threat. It left him to his thoughts about what he'd do when he gets to New Vegas. He'd stay at one of the casinos there, the owners might have jobs they need done, maybe some of the locals of the town would have something for him. As much as bodyguard work bored him there was also the Crimson Caravan. Those were the ones he thought of for the moment but there may have been others he hadn't.
The sun came up and glared down harshly, forcing him to don his glasses. Not long after Max emerged from the shack. "All quiet during the night, no more incidents up here after you brought that Follower in." He stayed seated until Chambers returned, at which point he stood up and donned his hat. "Nothing around here. Heard a bit of a shoot out to the south but there was nothing else. How's the new guy?"

"Is it really necessary that we stop here" said Lucas questioning why the group went out of their way instead of heading straight to Nipton. He'd come through here just a few days ago and wasn't keen on being back. He looked at the statue as the Ranger criticised it. 'Could just built a **** and make the same statement' he thought to himself. The caravans waiting to get through seemed to be much greater in number than when he'd passed earlier. He approached Max "You got a score to settle here?"

When Max left to speak to Ghost, Lucas made his way to the barracks to speak with Knight. He walked up to him and without looking up he spoke in a clearly bored voice. "Caravan, courier..." "We been through this already. Mercenary" replied Lucas cutting him off. "Couriers, you had any come in that are headed west?" Knight looked up at him for the first time "It's not customary for me to details of who passes through to a civilian." "Look Knight, this is important. I need this letter delivered." Knight stayed silent for a while before letting out a sigh. "Very well. There's one by the gate about to leave, waiting on some final paperwork. Scar across his nose."
Lucas thanked the Major and left promptly to find this courier that Knight had described. It didn't take long, the scar was very distinctive. "Courier! You're headed west correct? I need you to deliver a letter to a man in Junktown." Slowly, the courier returned his gaze "Sorry mate, that's a bit out of my way." Hearing that, Lucas tossed a pouch of caps to him. The courier weighed it to get an idea of how much it held. "That'll do it, who's the guy?" "Dark skinned, severe burn scars across the left half of his face. Usually wears a suit and hangs out at Gizmo's casino. Goes by the name of Marshall." "Consider it done friend." as Lucas finished his description he had already begun to leave. The approach to Nipton was relieving. The idea of spending some time in a proper settlement was appealing, not to mention a half decent bed. But the ambushing raiders poured out of the night before he could think about it too much. After the battle cries of the first thing heard was a distinctive sound of a powerful revolver. Snapping into action Lucas took a few shots at the first raider he saw, scoring a few hits. His skill with the weapons then showed as he put a few well aimed shots into the skull of the raider.
Then he saw laser flashes, but he hadn't fired. One of the raiders had gotten their hands on an energy weapon. The trail of light lead right back to him and Lucas unleashed a volley of fire in return. Pausing a moment the Raiders laser flashes halted. But it was no time for resting, out of the corner of his eye he saw a third raider rushing him whilst roaring "I'm going to enjoy this!". Knowing that he wouldn't be able to turn and fire the more cumbersome rifle in time he lowered the weapon in his right hand and grabbed his pistol with his left and took a shot in one fluid motion. Unfortunately he failed to hit anything vital and the bullet went into the raiders arm and he tumbled into Lucas, knocking them both on the ground.
The raider was above Lucas and attempted to strike him with a pipe. Lucas grabbed his wrist as it came towards him and struggled against the raider. The bullet proved to be a great help as his other arm was limp, allowing Lucas to grab his combat knife before being overpowered. He plunged the knife into his gut and a clear look of shock surfaced on the raiders face. Blood gushed from the wound as Lucas pushed the ranger off him. But he wasn't finished, he positioned himself above the raider and proceeded to beat him. He alternated between punching and sticking his knife into one of his arms whilst yelling profanities. "You think you can attack me huh? You think you can just rob me and leave me to die? Well **** you and **** all your buddies." He then finished by sticking the knife into the man's throat and slicing outwards, afterwards he rose to his feet and gathered the weapons that were knocked out of his hands previously.

As Lucas picked his weapons back up he noticed that the gunfire had ceased. He had also managed to calm down after his bout of rage at the raider. He looked around him, dead bodies littered the road. He knelt back down to the last raider he dispatched to loot him, some caps and jet. As he did so he heard Eddie ask if anyone was injured. That was the first time he inspected himself for wounds. "No, no, I ain't bleeding. Just a few bruises from that last one."
More of the Rangers cryptic babble reached his ears but he ignored it as Max walked away. 'Hmpf, the Doc would be better off letting him go kill himself.' Then he saw him aiming at another figure in the distance, but he left the Ranger to deal with it himself.

On his way to the campfire Lucas searched two bodies that law in between him and it. 2 Psycho's on the first and a Jet on the second, bringing the count up to three. He was not above using such items, but after considering it he decided they'd be more useful as a bartering tool.
But this was no time for thinking about that sort of thing. As he sat by the campfire, it was time to listen to the Ranger's story. A Centurion! The self righteous man he had been travelling with was a Centurion of Caesar's legion, or training to become one at least.. Noticeable ws the way he said Caesar, different from those he'd heard talking about it back west. He actually had very little knowledge of the Legion, given hat the Mojave is as far west. He had heard though that Caravans find their land exceptionally safe whilst passing through and need no protection, a stark contrast to the veritable business that has grown around Caravan protection in the NCR.
A thought crossed Lucas' mind, how much of his disdain for the NCR was cause by the influence of the Legion? He seems to bear no love for either, but he wondered nonetheless. "Heh, wouldn't have pegged you as a Legionaire. But I'd like to ask, why stay as long as reaching the Dam? I've heard some tales and it never sounded like they were much nicer beforehand."

Given that he hadn't slept for a number of days, a deep sleep came over Lucas following the fight. He was cast away in a meaningless but blissful dream, but when he returned from it he remembered little apart from the faces of people from his old life. Unfortunately the restful sleep had to come to an end as the harsh Mojave sun assaulted his eyes.
As he rose groggily he reached for his bag from which he grabbed a box of cram. Not the most glamorous of food, but there's certainly worse options when you're travelling. It was some kind of meat, that was all he knew and all he cared about as he gulped it down. He was half listening to the Follower and the Ranger as they conversed, but his ears perked up at the mention of explosives. "Grenades and Mines eh? You know how to use them?"

He sneaked around making sure not to be seen and arrived at a corner of a house west of the town hall that was perfectly positioned to overlook the entrance to the Hall. There was a distinct smell of burning flesh, and as he peered around the corner of the building he saw more. Decapitations, and people being strung up to posts. Like he had seen in Golgotha but these were tied rather than impaled. Then he heard Max yelling what appeared to be a name. 'What's that damned fool doing'

It was clear this Vulpes was trying to convince Max to rejoin the legion, it seemed odd though. Maximus would surely be considered a traitor by the legion, would the truly welcome him back so openly? 'He's more likely to be strung up to a post like those others' he thought to himself.
It seemed inevitable that if neither party backed down a shootout would occur and he considered his options. He could toss a grenade in while they were unaware, but that could catch Ma in the blast if he's too close. He whispered in a low breath "C'mon Max, back off."

The events of Nipton were unpleasant to say the least. Lucas was fortunate to have been tempered by past experiences but he wondered how the other two would react. The Men tied to posts, Beheadings, a clear smell of burning flesh mixed with rubber in the air, it's a lot to take in. A question came to his mind, '[i]Why?[i]' What reason could the Legion have for committing a town to such a fate? Perhaps to instil fear.
Approaching from the direction of the now gone Nipton where two figures, one of which pulled ahead of the other. As it got closer he recognised it as Eddie, the Doctor. He picked himself up and saw that he was visibly horrified by the events in the town. "You look like you saw hell itself kid. And I suppose for you it must've been. What about your bullshit about protecting the innocent, where the **** is your damned moralising now?"
If he had stayed in place much longer he would've surely struck the the Ranger, thinking better of it he left in pursuit of Eddie. "Keep your damned hypocrisy to yourself."

Payment from the Ranger was unexpected, Lucas assumed that the offer no longer stood once Max had walked out of the saloon back in Goodsprings. Still, he'd accept the caps regardless. He caught the bag from Eddie as he tossed it, it was a hefty bag. It ought to be if it contains 750 caps. Thinking about what he'd do in Vegas brought a smile to his face, gambling, drinking, getting a new weapon.
Somewhat absent minded as his attention was grabbed by Jason he responded. "No need to worry about that..." The follower was acting rather strangely. He followed Eddie as he went to check on him and caught the last half of the conversation. "As loopy as he is, we should try put as much distance between us and legion as we can."

None of the three where the same after Nipton, but it was clear Jason was the worst affected. It seemed like he had lost his mind entirely, must've been his first time seeing something like that. Eddie was clearly traumatised as well, but managed to keep his head on him. Against his will, he recounted the first time he saw the effects of a raid. It was Junktown, it wasn't destroyed but it was hit hard. Men were killed, women were abducted...Eddie broke his line of though before he could dwell too long
Before responding he looked ahead into the distance, there seemed to be a large canyon ahead. Prime spot for ambushing he thought. "Well, looks like we'll have to go through that canyon ahead. If we take the low road we'd do well to keep our wits about us. Or we could climb the side, though that'd slow us down a fair bit. If your up for it we could press on through the night and head for that encampment you mentioned. If not then it's that farm. Looks like those options pair up, over the side and hit the ranch or straight through and make as much distance as we can. I'd be wary of a canyon like that so I reckon the first choice would be the way to go. Unless you'd prefer the other."

"I hear ya Doc." was all that Lucas said whilst thinking about how to approach this valley. It was too good of a location for there to not be an ambush waiting in some way. Nodding to the right he continued "I could go up the side and check it out, anything up there won't see me coming. I'd come back and let you know or you could head straight on through and I'd get the drop on anything or anyone up there." then he turned to the left. "Could try cut across that way and go around the canyon. I hear Nightstalkers are particularly fond of this area though." Looking straight ahead he delivered his final statement. "The there's risking heading straight through, it'll be faster but if there's anything up there we're prime targets. Thoughts?"

A classic attempt at a guilt trip from Eddie. It worked to a point, he'd been a decent travel companion so far. That and having a Doctor around is hugely beneficial. "You got it kid, keep an eye out" he said as he set off. The incline was steep enough to be rather inconvenient, but still manageable at least. [Sneak]Lucas climbed it slowly trying to make as little noise as possible. A stone or two came loose, but it was nothing significant. Approaching a kind of ridge he stopped and listened, there were footsteps. Very heavy footsteps. He was conscious of his breathing and hoped nothing was looking his direction as he looked over.
Bighorners. He let out a sigh of relief that they were all that were there along a small flat atop the cliff. But he was not yet done, there was another area yet to climb. He made his way by the relatively peaceful creatures and took a position behind them that left him in view of Eddie and overlooked the canyon. Sure enough there were two would be ambushers hiding here, hidden from view of the entrance. He took a good look at them, one was in leather armour and carried a grenade rifle. The woman beside him was clad in metal armour and held what appeared to be a varmint rifle. Lucas was about to signal when he spotted a third at the far side of the canyon. It was hard to see, but by their stance it looked like they were holding some sort of melee weapon.
He looked back to his companions and pointed to the far side of the canyon, hoping Eddie would at least pay attention to that side, and followed up by waving them on. Keeping his rifle pointed at the one in Leather he waited for the opportune moment to pull the trigger.

As Eddie and Jason made their way into the canyon, the Raider raised his grenade rifle to attack them. But before he could, Lucas took his shot, striking the raider in his throat. He fell, dying nearly instantly. His companion turned around after hearing the distinctive sound of the laser rifle. She quickly took a shot that went wide and grazed the pauldron of his reinforced leather. Lucas' follow up shots were on target but momentarily by a return shot that went into his shoulder. Fortunately his armour slowed it down enough that the bullet only made a shallow incision into his flesh.
His own punctured through her armour and felled her. Turning his attention to the action unfolding below, he prepared to aid Jason and Eddie when he was struck from behind. A third raider had happened upon them and ambushed him. He was knocked to the ground and dropped his rifle but managed to regain his composure and rolled to avoid a follow up from the raider.
He managed to stand back up a pull out his pistol, manoeuvring to put the raider between him and the cliff face he took a shot at his leg and rushed him, knocking him off balance and down into the canyon. With no chance of him surviving, or at least of being able to move afterwards, he looted the bodies of the other two raiders. 20 caps and a grenade rifle which he slung over his back. With no where to stow his laser rifle, he'd be forced to carry it at all times. While it was only slightly more weight it would still prove to be more tiring, particularly with a now injured shoulder. With the battle below seemingly over, he made his way down to meet back up with Jason and Eddie.

Lucas made his way down to the canyon, now noticing a sharp pain in his shoulder from where the bullet was housed and a second lingering one where he was struck from behind. He missed most of the events below and heard his name called out by Eddie. Waiting until he was on flat ground to respond, he heard a distinctive gunshot of a large calibre pistol. 'Damn thing's not over yet?' he thought to himself as he kept low.
Then he saw him. That damned Ranger had come around again. 'Would've been better off with the deathclaws'. [Sneak] He approached him stealthily and struck him with the stock of the rifle to the back of the head. While he wasn't the strongest it should prove enough to momentarily daze him whilst delivering his usual righteous bullshit. "You're a hell of a pain, ya know that? I've met gangsters that had more decorum." remarked Lucas as he levelled his rifle. "Now, could you do us a favour and stop threatening the good doctor?"

The long walk to Novac was dull to the point that Lucas had temporarily forgotten about the bullet pierced ever so slightly into his flesh. The group kept a steady pace and managed to arrive before midnight. As Lucas and Eddie went their separate ways a figure caught Lucas' attention walking from the Dinosaur to the Motel. [Friend of the Night] The figure was dark skinned and male, but before he could determine his identity the figure darted to a motel room with a look of panic.
Lucas' followed him and managed to catch which room he retreated to. As soon as Lucas entered he recognised the man, Bruce Issac, a singer from New Reno. "****, look Lucas we can make a deal. Just me and you, we don't need to get Mr Bishop involved. I can get caps, I'll give you whatever the hell you want if you don't turn me in." "Brucey, calm down, I'm not here for Bishop." "You...you're not? He didn't send you to get revenge?" "Revenge? What the hell did you do?" "Uh...his daughter, and I may have taken care of a problem with payment." "You....stole caps from and defiled the daughter of the head of one of the most powerful crime families in New Reno?"
Lucas stared in disbelief at the man as a short silence lingered between them. It was no wonder Bruce was practically terrified, Mr Bishop was ruthless and knew every inch of the wasteland personally. It wouldn't be long until he or one of his henchmen searched the Mojave. Bruce broke the silence as he gestured at Lucas shoulder where blood had now been seeping through. "You alright" Remembering the wound, Lucas took that area of the armour of. Since it was mostly lodged in the leather the bullet came with it but this slightly increased the bleeding. "So if you're not here on Bishops payroll why are you so far east?" "Needed a change of scenery, heard some good things about New Vegas. Thought I'd check it out" "Ah, passing through Novac then. Hey if you want you can take the couch"
Lucas considered his options for a moment and decided that this was the simplest option. Placing his knife, pistol, Laser Rifle and newly acquired grenade rifle out of the way he lay back on the couch and rested. It wasn't quite a proper bed but it was better than what he had been using for the past couple of nights.
The morning came and with it came his cue to leave. He gathered his gear and left Bruce still slumbering. Arriving outside he noticed Eddie looking somewhat pleased. The sight of Eddie had reminded him of the caps paid to them by the Ranger. 750, split evenly that'd bring Lucas' total up to 840. He presented the pouch to Eddie "Morning. Time to split the caps. 325 each."

"Heh, you can call me whatever you want. I'm sticking with my original plan. Heading up to New Vegas, blow off some steam and see who needs a merc to do some work for them. NCR are around here, they always have trouble with raiders, might head to one of their camps and check out the bounties."
Lucas paused a moment. He thought back to the encounter with the Ranger east of Nipton. He had not caught most of the confrontation and was still confused about his sudden hostility to the Follower.
"Back near Nipton, the Ranger called the Follower, Jason, and abomination. What did he mean by that?"

New Vegas wasn't far off now that they're nearing the 188 Trade post, and as they did so the conversation turned towards the city. What caught Lucas' ear was talk of accessing the Strip. "There's a monorail that goes from the airport to the strip right? Might be able to get on that way"
A device like that would no doubt be heavily guarded in the centre of the a military base. His only hope was that he still had enough good will with the NCR. He'd never worked with them in an official capacity, but he had done extensively back west doing more covert jobs that couldn't be handed out to soldiers, most often for legal reasons.

Lucas observed along with Eddie as Jason approached the the young child. They exchanged the usual greetings but it continued into a much more unusual conversation about 'thoughts'. He immediately noticed the profound impact the talk made on Jason as he staggered away afterwards. The kid seemed like some kind of fortune teller. 'Complete bogus' he thought to himself, but then looked to Jason as he threw up. Despite telling himself that it would be nonsense he found himself greatly curious about what he would have to say.
"Ah screw it, mind the rifle." he muttered as he left it on the table and approached the young Forecaster.
"Hi Mister, did your friend send you?"
Lucas stayed silent and sat down in front of the kid. A moment later he replied. "My curiosity got the better of me kid. You sell thoughts?"
"That's right Mister, one hundred caps and I'll think like I did for your friend."
Lucas counted out the caps and laid them in front of him. "Think about me."
The child gave a nod and took off his medicine. The instant it was off he cast a somewhat unsettling and focused gaze on Lucas as he spoke in a slower, more thoughtful tone.
"Cards are played against you and you have no power. Watching in helplessness as you lose everything. After that everything changes and you take control. The deck is stacked in your favour...you take advantage. More players come and go but you're always on top as the chips start to obscure your sight. Forecast: Stormy"
Lucas sat in silence for a time pondering what was said. The kid spoke in riddles, and yet most of it made sense in a way. He pushed the caps towards the child before returning to his companions in silence.

He mulled over the Forecasters words in his head for a while as he ate a Brahmin Steak bought from the rest stop. The more Lucas thought about it the more ridiculous it sounded, a kid talking about card games which was supposedly about his future. He would've been able to put it out of his mind entirely if not for a few specific words. 'Watching in helplessness as you lose everything.' That was no fluke, somehow the kid knew about the attack. He had to, but it was a four years ago and back west, there was no way he should have known. But he did and once again Lucas felt himself wanting a stiff drink to put it out of his mind. He was about to but stopped when Eddie spoke. Slowly, he responded.
"He spoke in riddles. As if it about some strange game of poker. Someway, somehow he knows my past. Some of it anyway. He spook you like he did Jason?"

Jason's words were little more than murmurs to Lucas as his thoughts drift to the event the Forecaster spoke of. The images are still ingrained into his mind. The last of the raiders leaving Junktown as he arrived, the fires....the collapsing buildings. The sight of his home as it lay scorched, bloodstained and empty.
'No damnit, not again...' he shook his head as if trying to dislodge his thoughts. It was the idleness that was getting to him. He needed something to distract him, occupy his mind so he wouldn't be brought back to that dark time. Only noticing his fist had been clenched for some time he relaxed it and rose to his feet. Sitting around here was doing him no good.
"Let's go, I don't want to stay any loner than we need to." he said whilst walking a way. He kept a slow pace for now, giving the others time to catch up but still giving the clear impression that he was leaving. Still the images haunted him but hopefully they would subside along the journey.
